Thank you Graeme for sharing this great piece of footage that you managed to get at the time , just so wonderful to see it ; In hindsight - it'd have been great "if" you had of known how to record the ambient sounds ( back then ) onto a reel-to-reel recorder so that many years later you could've added them onto this great footage along with the film but we would've not even considered that the internet & You Tube was ever going to be a "thing" in our futures ; Many Thanks once again.

A diesel loco is just a box on wheels, point A to point B ( like a hybrid car, internal combustion making power for the wheels ) a steam engine is the closest to a living BREATHING machine man has made, thankfully growing up i got to see REAL steam trains and would come running out to see them ( 1967 i would have been 3yrs old ) sometimes we wish we could go back there but without Doc Browns DeLorean we won,t be, just joking ok!!
Great video, i,m glad i got to see them as a growing up! 👍👍

Thanks,I remember that train pulling into Regents Park station in 67 68 on it's way south on Friday afternoons when I was 9 years old....It was a daunting sight for a young kid to see this big monster nearing the platform.

Superb shots. Very clear. The locos look like they are kept reasonably clean and some pride is left in workers. The 38s were barely 20'years old here. What a waste they were retired so early.

Yes. The reason I took the film was because I knew they were on borrowed time and would soon be just memories. Already at that time, the Southern Highlands Express was diesel hauled in quieter holiday periods.

Born ‘63 in Melbourne I never once saw a steam loco in revenue service for VR. In the distance, I spotted a steam loco shunting once at Jolimont in the 70s - or so I believed.

I too was brought up in Melbourne the only steam I saw in service was an R class heading for Leongatha and another bringing back a failed railcar to Dandenong. There was D3 at Warragul in 1963-4 I believe and I saw a pair of J class in yards At Dandenong in 1967 most of the steam action was in the Western district towards the end of the 60 s

Rode behind 6042 in its "last" trip to Bargo 1973. Hope it emerges from the paddock near forbes eventually. Credit to Keith Jones and pals for saving engines in the 70s. Subsequent conduct ...?

@@davidmason7765 don't worry 6042 will make its way up north when funding for transportation becomes available allthough the loco is intended to be used as spare parts for 6039 wich of course is at the museum in the potato siding, 6039 is in mint out of service condition having been treated with black oil ever since the museum perchased the loco and will be joined by 6042 when it comes to the top of the priority list.

Great stuff. Used to regularly ride the Southern Highlands between Penrose - Strathfield late '50's/early '60's when it was pulled by 36's. Last trip was December 1963. Can anyone tell me when the 36's were superseded by 38's?
