New to the channel? I do Let's Play videos -- these are like walkthrough guides of gameplay with continuous English commentary trying to explain my decisions and what strategy I use. If you're looking for hacks or cheats, you're in the wrong place!
"Pillars of Eternity is a fantasy role-playing video game from Obsidian Entertainment for Microsoft Windows, OS X and Linux."
"Pillars of Eternity will feature a party-based real-time-with-pause tactical gameplay, fixed isometric user interface for the game-world with two-dimensional pre-rendered backdrops, in a similar vein as its spiritual ancestors Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale series and Planescape: Torment (all based on BioWare's Infinity Engine).
The mechanics will not be based on Dungeons & Dragons rules, and the plot and setting will be an original IP. The player's party can have up to six total companions, including the main hero, and they'll be recruited while exploring the world. The main character will be highly customizable and the player's choice of class, sex, race (and subrace), culture, traits, skills and appearance will give the character its own personal background." -- Wikipedia - Hry
For a little clearance about the 10 points of damage issue at 23:30. Your bear form attacks with claws which gives "raw damage" a special damage type that totally ignores DR. That is why you read 9.8 - 4 = still 9.8 damage.
Sorry but I have to disagree... Spiritshift forms have 5 DR bypass (source: pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Spiritshift)
vay amk
@@victordias8899 meaning it bypasses up to DR 5? so if the wolf has DR 4, the DR 5 bypass is 1 more than enough to bypass the whole thing? I don't know if this is the answer, but that would make sense.
Red space in a spell AOE represents that it will damage your party members. Yellow means it will only affect enemies.
Foe AOE only hits foes though. I think on release they fixed the circles so foe AOE is just a yellow circle.
For standard AOE spells you have the default range and the extended range (affected by intellect) . The extended area acts as a Foe AOE.
Yes, he gets that wrong repeatedly in the video
Wish I watched this video b4 starting the game.
I really struggled with combat at the beginning
By mid act-2 I figured out a few old reliables and stuck to them ignoring the intricacies of mechanics. Throw in a berserker to the front line, spam ranged attacks. Cast druid’s stone skin on all, block the mob with all party members and let the wizard deal with threats from far away. Spam summoned creatures.
In act-3 these approaches stopped working and I finally had to pay attention to damage types, status effects, make sure my party is well equipped with potions, all weapons are enchanted, and the rest bonus favors the area im in.
Fighting a sky dragon was a major turning point when I started micropausing to time when to stun the dragon cos it was the only thing that would let me survive and I had a very limited number of stuns.
It’s great how in this system no matter how you throw stats around you will always be vulnerable to something which keeps the welcome necessity to pick and plan your battles alive till end game. Meanwhile in most RPGs you eventually end up with a juggernaut that in invincible to all, so any battle degrades into mindless hacking until you win.
i played through the entire game... i now see just how little i understood about the game.
I'm about to pick this up for the very first time (on the Switch), and this was VERY helpful to watch before I begin. Glad I did. Great video
I don't comment on videos often, but you are certainly one of my top goto commentators for games like this and EU etc. Awesome video as always, and the effort it take to put out videos like this this is much appreciated - something which doesn't get mentioned enough.
I certainly know what game I'm going to be picking up next in two days time.
It really annoys me that I absolutely love this game, but as a person who is completely and utterly incompetent in terms of strategy, I just can't get past moderately difficult fights.
I just got this game and started it on easy. I play games for fun, not to me brow beat. As I get better, I might bump it up.
riight whay im here
Dude, do what I did, swallow your pride and play it on easy until you really understand the mechanics :) Learn as you go along :p
The biggest killer for me is keeping track of spells and abilities of all 6 part members .
I can barely do that for 1 character when I'm playing a spellcaster on D&D....let alone 6 people...let alone in a non turn based environment.
Lower the difficulty until you learn
Having gotten so used to D&D mechanics, I SO apprteciate the breakdown here! Thanks for the wonderful explanation!

Huuuuugely exited about this! You HAVE to go for a full playthrough... I don't care that I'll get spoiled because it'll probably be a while before I'll be able to play it myself! ;)
One of the best youtube videos I've ever watched..... Awesome details and perfectly paced.
I really appreciate video-tutorials for a game like this. Especially from you Quill, who are always very informative :)
This helps a lot in understanding stats. I zoned out during the learning curves playing the tutorial. I am stuck on Dragon Age Origins way of stat building.
"No one 'doesn't' want dexterity." That's heavy.
Good stuff! I'm very excited about the game - it's nice to have a concise overview of the mechanics before I get to play it myself. Thanks!
Great video! Bought this game a bunch of years ago, but only just getting into it. Kind of a slow burn, but really satisfying now that I’m learning my way around.
Some incredible mechanics on display here. The intellect AoE foe/friend indicator is probably one of the coolest mechanics I've EVER seen in a video game. Can't wait to dive into this game.
Just started playing this and this is a great tutorial on the mechanics (I've played IWD,IWD2,BG games, these are my favorite types of games)
Thanks for exposing this gem Quill18, good ol' complicated mechanics.
Excellent video and summary! These few minutes learning how the game works will make for much better (many!) hours of gameplay later
Risking saying this before the video ends, so sorry if you do mention this later on.
But its important to note that on top of the combat mechanics you mentioned that the stats also have out-of-combat effects.
And many (if not outright all) encounters can infact be overcome without actually going into combat in the first place.
Perception may help you notice things and give you options.
Might will give you intimidation - and this works for both casters aswell as melee characters.
And so on.
However at least according to developers these arent necessarily better solutions. Actually they can mislead you into bad decisions. Lets say you got 2 options to be diplomatic and one [Might] option to intimidate. This [Might] Option might be tempting but it might be the only option which leads to a fight or has a "worse" outcome than the others. So you have to think for yourself and should autoselect anything whenever there is an [Attribute] infront of it.
Kordanor
The same holds true for fighting. Choosing to go for brute force rather than a peaceful resolution may well result in a character dying off that you could otherwise have 'recruited' to help you later on.
Long story short, much unlike a game such as "Mass Effect" (or similar) where a highlighted paragon/renegade option is almost always "better", things aren't always as obvious here.
Finally something other than City Skylines! Don't get me wrong, I like the game, but enough for me.
You are a really good commentator, nice to listen to you keep it up!
Thanks! This was a fantastic tutorial. I started watching this as my copy was downloading. I look forward to the character tutorial.
Thanks for the explanation of the mechanics dude. I had bought the game on Steam sale, but got pretty discouraged by the depth of he mechanics. Might just give this another try, and enjoy it this time! Really well done explanation!
Thanks a lot for these videos. I wanted an updated info on the game mechanics so I can get myself distracted until Thursday pondering what my first character and party composition will be like.
This game is amazing. 80 hours gameplay, great story telling, the old classic battle system, and no internet required. Some may turn of by its old graphics but it still better than most indie game.
Best guide on YT for this game. Thank you Sir. Can’t wait for your BG3 vids.
Very well done tutorial sir. Thanks for the info. Crazy hyped for this game!
Man I wish CZcams was around during the infinite engine days. Thanks a bunch Quill! you've probably saved me a dozen character re-rolls.
Really well put together. Thank you very much Quill !
I actually really like the expert mode options. I have fond memories of playing Icewind Dale when I was 11 and realizing partway through that I had gained an intuitive sense of exactly how far my fireballs would splash. Nothing is quite like keeping your front-line characters warm and safe with a rolling barrage of explosions aimed by dead reckoning.
You needed half the game to memorize spell distances?
@@JJ-ze6vb He said he realized he learned this intuitively partway, not that he learned it partway. Partway doesn't even mean half way lmao. If you're gonna be a pretentious dork at least have decent reading comprehension.
Thank you for this very interesting video, it reminded me i missed Baldur's Gate so much, and made me more eager for a bit of Pillars of Eternity.
That's a really excellent help video for PoE. It's difficult to find somehting like this around, so thanks for that.
Nice Tutorial Quill! Thanks for breaking this down!
Cheers, Ivan :D
I can't believe such an incredibly good game doesn't have multiplayer.... Great video! Thanks!
love the mechanics, going to get started and play!
Finally came to console so just started. Loving the first couple of hours so far.
"At this point you're 5 minutes into the game"
>is 25 minutes into the video
somehow i stayed at the tutorial area for like 4+ hrs, just gazing at the game xd
Very intuitive! Very detailed. It’s fun, you just gotta pay attention to all these different stats, bosses times and penalties! It’s quite a lot to take in... at first.
This game looks like something I definitely want! Can't wait.
From a Reddit discussion the bug at 23:00 is not a calculation bug but a Log bug. Bear claws (and possible other polymorph claws) have a natural 5DR reduction (wow if so)
I am kinda new to the whole diceroll, actual pen/paer rpg stuff.... Playing this game on easy so far, but would realy like to have my second playtrough, a bit higher on the difficulty, and this is where videos like this can really make the difference. Love the in depth explanation, GG m8 :) Gonna subscribe, good channel :)
Awesome stuff; really interesting and thoughtfull guide video :D Thanks!
Well finally I understand how this game works hahahha thanks for the vid man keep up the good work!
Quill18 is the legend of tutors!
Damn good video :) thanks alot. I've been wanting to try this game for a long time but never played anything like it.. think its better to play an earlier rpg like baldurs gate first?
Thanks for this dude. Looking forward to get into this game but it's quite complicated feels like
It's not as complicated as you might think, you just need to try it out for yourself.
Excellent and informative video!
So, in DnD, all stats are important. When you have a "dump stat," though, you're consciously deciding that this is where my character is going to be weak, not that my character doesn't need this (except intel and wisdom for non-casters). The idea is the maximize strengths and existing weaknesses with the understanding that someone else in the party will cover for where I am weak, and I'll cover for where they are weak.
Also charisma. I've been in parties where the Amazing Hero (Base CHA 18) is followed by their retinue of wretched troglodytes (everyone else dumps CHA). It can actually lead to some fairly amusing roleplay opportunities.
However this also leads to very generic characters, and don't get me wrong, i love DnD, but when somebody creates a Magetype character you can bet, that he/she's going to have high Intelligence. There is little to no incentive to mix it up a little. If they succeeded in freeing up those generic choices and promoting experimenting with the stats, i have no idea, but i sure hope so, although i suspect there is also going to be a streamlined way to go in this game.
Nothing beats real pen and paper, where people actually play their role and maybe even enjoy failing at combat, instead of hoping to scrap by to see the ending of the game.
I'm so excited to play this game =)
I like how you contradicted yourself.
So with xp and the way it works, does that mean that whenever you fight humans or whatever isn't in the beastiary then you don't get any xp for the kill?
Ok I'm extra late to the party, some what have an idea of these games .alot of what you shared was very informative ty broheim
I loved the Baldurs Gate Series, and this seems like a cool entry into this style of RPG. Interesting mechanics as well, and a nice introduction.
Do the different types of damage (slash, pierce) make a difference against various armours?
Many thanks for the helpful video!
The video is 5 years old and I'm pretty late, but the damage "bug" of 23:40 is not a bug - Bear Claws have a DR bypass of 5. Your enemy still has a DR of 4 but you're ignoring up to 5 DR points, hence the "9.8-4=9.8".
I got this game on switch and I keep pushing so far before camping someone drops. glad I watched this to actually figure out what deflection actually does
Holy shit, that Bestiary system is the BEST way to implement XP in a RPG. Grinding is gone, adventure is on top.... and that feeling of progress is there in the defense information learnt: bravo Obsidian!!!
Beautiful mechanics, especially the Int FoF aoe effect.
@Boba for additional effect. Never back down, especially to comments on a 5 year old comment.
Look, this looks freaking amazing....
But I cant ignore Bloodborne. I'll have to wait on this one.
***** ugh, I know, and then in May the Witcher 3
***** shieet i need to finish W2 still
MRLebanonnn Do it! Its awesome
got idea to wait, some really game breaking bugs are there now.
There is so much to understand in the character building and battlefield, so thank you for explaining all this, I'll use this better on my next playthrough. I'm having trouble with my stash being full mostly by pages, letters, notes, books, am I safe to just sell all those old letters from my inventory without drawbacks? Can someone please help me with my full storage problem?
im new in this type games and i rly love your Turorial and guide :) im just litle confused with class bulids :S
Great tutorial! Thank you!
I was actually looking for help on how to use the potions I've no idea. i put them in the quick slots but still no idea.
also after each fight i see my spells are greyed out, wanted to understand how those work, and finally, my health is depleted a bit more every time, so I wanted to know how to heal in and out of the fight but also whether health eventually goes back up.
Didnt find any of those in this video.
There are two parts of health. Health and endurance.
Endurance is what is "life" during a fight, if it gets to 0 you get incapacitated and are out of the fight, if you win your characted will wake up and regenerate endurance in a short while. There is spells and potions that increase this during fights (like traditional healing potions).
but at each fight you also loose Health. You often have much more health then endurance (say 300 health, 50 endurance), but each fight you take damage will deal as much to health as endurance.
If you loose 40 endurance each fight you will die after 5 fights (permanently) if you have 200 life.
Life is regenerated when sleeping. Not sure if there are spells that can cure that. To make it impossible to just grind a entire map.
So, getting the bestiary progress filling out enemy stats sound really cool and all (especially if you want to do a "blind" play through) but if you watch the combat log doesn't it spoil some of the enemy stats (like DR in this case ? which got not filled in after combat even though you clearly saw the number) or is it changed by mow or is it just me being picky :P ?
I like your explanation. It's awesome >_
Thank you very much quill, this helped alot.
Thanks for this. It's helpful for deciding whether or not to get PoE (I'm leaning towards yes).
PSA: It's on sale at Steam until January 4th.
Thanks Quill
I am brand new to game and loving it. Restarting as I had no idea what I was doing and here I go again. But this video helped me understand more. Im on PC using xbox season pass to try before I buy and definitely adding to collection. Anyone out there wanna get on discord while playing let me know. Would love the help.
If I've never played a game similar to this. Can I start with this one, or it's gonna be to difficult for me?
Very helpful video thank you!
As someone who's never really played this level of RPG, seemed a bit intimidating at first but your vids actually convinced me to try it (thank you).
So how goes it?
@@taterpussy3825 I'm about 50 hours in and I LOVE it. :)
Edit: I think I'm officially on board with cRPGs.
I just got to act 2 but have been exploring and clearing side quests. Went with a fighter after attempting my first time as a wizard and decided to learn the basics and mechanics better. Such a good game
thanks for the vid ! was helpful !
Wait, if you only get exp for filling out the bestiary, won't that severely discourage exploring until you have gotten a hold of all your party members? Or are exp awarded retroactively to new party members?
***** As far as I can tell, new party members will more or less match your level. Also, getting XP while solo = you get all the XP instead of splitting it up.
quill18 Thanks for the reply. Good to know that new partymembers match your level... But split XP? So, if partymembers match your level when you meet them, that actually encourages going around solo and earning as much XP as possible before meeting them. ugh. This game is going to mess with my urge to minmax.
***** Or one could simply play the game whatever way one wishes, without being subconciously obsessed about minmaxing every little detail... If you want to explore, explore. If you dont want, dont. My stance on the matter of minmaxing is that, frankly, if i miss something in a game or a minmax opportunity is overlooked, i take it as a challenge and satisfaction in beating said challenges WITHOUT having been utterly minmaxed to the max in every detail. A good player can overcome hardships and win even without all the odds stacked and triple stacked in his favor. In fact, in many ways it is more fun to play that way, in a dynamic "do what you want" way, and solve the upcoming problems with the gratification of succeeding, without having pre-mapped theorycrafted This-Is-How-U-Win solutions pasted on the side of the monitor.I exagerrate a bit, but you get my point. Thats just my personal opinion on the matter. *(Edit: god google keeps ruining youtube more and more, now the comments cant handle line breaks. Everything turns into a continous wall of text. Brilliant..)*
Baleur This.. All of this. god i want to play T-T and i refuse to look at the videos of it because i'm afraid it will spoil story for me and i want to play it fresh!
Why is it so much time left before i get to plaaaay!?!
"Okay ignore all this, i can't help myself xD i'm watching all the videos right now."
Baleur I like how you say people should just play how they want to, and then in the next breath chide him for wanting to min/max.
someone knows if its possible to change your charcter's proffesion mid game? maybe cheats or mods? i dont care about achievments
Why does there need to be an anti grind mechanic?
Very helpful, thank you.
Hi I am new to this genre of games can anyone please give me some advice.
For instance, is this a good game to begin with, or should I start on some other?
What sort of things should I lookup? (I know people don't do this for games generally but this game has far more depth than anything I have played before).
Any positive advice will be appreciated.
Thank You. :)
The Hype must flow. Oh and Quill meant to say non-standard barbarian/fighter, not wizard. :P
In any case thanks Quill, great breakdown of the mechanics.
Is it possible to grind at all? I love to grind and this game seems really cool, so I'm just wondering about that.
I'm still confused about whether I'm stopping and starting the game after each "skill use" (e.g. Knockdown on my Fighter), then programming another one then pressing start again, or do I just let the game autoplay? How do I control three party members too?
I breezed through Divinity Original Sin 2 on Tactician, but this game is hella hard
Wolf might be weak to slash damage, being the reason why the DR didn't work?
Are battles done automatically?
Damn... this looks good.
Any of you got tacticts for the ogre chieftain?
Well done!
that's really helpful, thank you
Excellent review and mechanic overview, +1 subbed, wishlisted on steam.
This game is hard for me since its my first rpg with realtime with pause combat rpg. Spells having limited uses per rest was a mechanic that i had a hard time dealing with. Character building is something that i guess u can make a few mistakes on but still make it out alright. On my first playthrough, im on normal & on act 3. Once i finish this game, its on the back burner for a few weeks, i will be playing the sequel in turn based mode. Overall its a great game
I really want to play this game! :C and I have to wait several days! DAYS!
How many times I was in that encampment... A game which I still playing years after, with mods, it is unlimited.
helpful but i mostly wanted to know what happens when you have a full team and run across another hero that joins you.
This game is so good but I cant keep track of all the spells, every level up I am clueless on what to take. way too much choice. and when you get a new party member and have to now learn a whole new class. I cant keep up :(
What about Accuracy as a rogue, does accuracy directly increase damage?
You could teach a class on how to create helpful, to the point CZcams videos, this was perfect, thanks so much!
anyone know about 23:40? is it just a bug
Could you please clarify attack mechanics with dual wielding, one-handed and two handed weapons? For instance, with average attack speed and no modifiers it will be:
- 1H-weapon, no shield: 1 second to hit, 2 seconds cooldown;
- 1H-weapon, shield: the same situation (higher defences, lower accuracy);
- Dual wielding: main-hand hit, off-hand hit, cooldown (2 hits per 3 seconds);
- 2H-weapon: 1 second to hit, 2 seconds cooldown (the same as 1H-weapon).
Am I right? Is it correct? Thank you.
Oh man oh man, after all these years, finally a game of this genre that actually looks enjoyable. Sadly the few I've tried in the last five or so years have been a let down.\.
what does fatigue do?
I'm surprised other games haven't used the endurance system or the bestiary system like eternity does.
