I saw a video a couple years ago where the builder made a scribe using a sewing needle. I thought he was nuts because needles are brittle. I called his bluff and ordered the fattiest sewing needle I could find which was .120 dia. Slapped together a one piece body ( .375 or 3/8 aluminum rod) I just hacksawed a 6 inch piece of rod, faced it, drilled a .120 hole in it, glued the needle in knowing it was going to break in no time flat. Well that was like 3 years ago and I use that scribe almost everyday in my shop. I'm still waiting for it to break so I'll have a reason to make a nicer one with the other needle in my tool box. (they were a 2 pack) Best kept NOT-So-Secret in hobby machining.
@@EnglishHobbyMachinist Interesting. I will stick with my broken sds bits though, too much work for me & not enough time unfortunately. will watch some of his other vids on engraving though when I get chance👍
Nice work as usual. We shared this video on our homemade tool forum this week 😎
Thank you
One for the make list. Thank you.
It’s a quick project 👍
Very nice Mark. Before I had my workshop I had a little Unimat lathe, and a scribe was the first thing I made. Cheers Nobby
I made this one because I wanted a long one and one with a bit of weight, I have been using it for about 3 months now and love it 👍
love it!!!
Thank you 👍

I have be using it for about 3 months now and as you say no problems 👍
Thanks for the post.
What did you use to glue the parts together? Some form of epoxy or something like a thread locker?
From memory it was loctite 638 👍
@@EnglishHobbyMachinist Thanks!
how about a retractable one. you never see them. at least i've never seen one. It would be handy in your top pocket.
There are some about, I could make one in the same design as my bolt action pen but it’s a lot of work 👍
@@EnglishHobbyMachinist i've never seen one!
