  • In this episode of “Gender Therapist Q&A” I answer questions around the theme of “nonbinary erasure.” Nonbinary identities are invisible to much of our society. This can be really challenging for us to deal with on a day-to-day basis. In this video offer ideas as to how you can figure out your own personal approach to handling this, as well as discussing the importance of finding support for yourself as a nonbinary person.

First name as pronoun is a great idea. It also helps remove ambiguity in communication (who is being talked about).

I love your videos, I really identify with them. I'm 41, and have figured out in the last 6 years or so that I'm nonbinary. I went through a long time where I just thought I was a gay female. (I've never liked the word "lesbian" for me)

I'm 41 and nonbinary too, but haven't identified as nb for as long as you. I also thought I was a lesbian, I married a woman and everything; but somehow being a woman just didn't fit me. What seems to fit right now is Agender, and I feel more comfortable with my identity.

does anyone else internalize that stuff.

Like I tell myself im a pain in the butt since i have seen so many other people expressing those thoughts about nonbinarys but it doesn't change me or do anything except hurt

Using my first name as a pronoun is a great idea. Especially since in my language there isn't a good gender neutral pronoun yet (or at least not one I am comfortable with they all feel like they came from a word blender).

Hi :) This only works for people who know me relatively well or at least over an extended time frame. However, I have noticed that my existence in itself means that people who know me - see me for who I am without any significant explanation. Their language may be off at times but I'm confident that they see me as I am just though time spent in each others spaces. These are people who have no idea what non-binary is or means. But they see an individual for who they are. So my essence is visible in their presence.

I ask questions on your videos A LOT lmao I'm sorry, but how can I be certain that I should transition. I've been talking to my Therapist and she said it seemed as if I wasn't certain about transitioning and I'm honestly torn. I like my masculine and feminine features equally, but I know that I am very uncomfortable with my body, what should I do?

I am glad you are working with a therapist, because that would be my answer to you if you weren't. Your situation, your personality, your experience, your fears, your hopes, are all unique to you, so I wouldn't be able to answer that for you. In the end it's a matter of weighing the options out and knowing that there's no perfect answer. I'm hoping to create a short guide to help with this in the near future so stay tuned :)

I'm not trans or non-binary but I do have this thing, this problem and its with how I don't rly like my name. the name I have on CZcams rn is just a shortened version of the real thing and I get kind of mocked or made fun of it but it's not like I feel like I could just suddenly change it because it's not like my relatives or any of my friends would just suddenly start calling me by tristen or whatever ( I don't want to be called tristen just an example) so I don't know how I could make that happen

First name is my preferred pronoun too! I have always signed my emails: "marty preferred but they/them/their is fine too". I'm trying to convey the message that I'm not anal about pronouns (except in writing), would much prefer you to use my actual name (because that's who I am!) but also using my email signature to inform you I'm nonbinary in a non-confrontational way - I deliberately don't use the word pronoun in the signature.

As someone who is a male i wanna let you know, no one really cares what you identify yourself with and thats the truth but everyone in this world feels alone and like they dont fit in wether you're gay, straight, or whatever you are, its a part of life everyone deals with that. But don't look for people to fit in just cause they "accept you", go find out who you are and stand out and find people who genuinely see your presence as a present/gift.
