Fun fact: in 1954 the zoo in Antwerp in Belgium was the first zoo in the world to breed an okapi.
As Belgium had colonies in Congo they had direct acces to them.
To this day they still have okapis and that is where I saw them.👍
So tragic what Belgium did to the Congo.

Related to giraffe (long neck and similar face). Has stripes like a zebra (back legs). Pretty epic to me.
Fun fact: while a giraffe's coat is made of stiff course hairs, making it feel very rough, the okapi's coat is soft and has a velvety texture. This, and their meat is why they were hunted virtually to extinction when the Belgians invaded the Congo.
Fun Fact: The smell of a giraffe depends on the spot pattern

Some people including myself have gotten than mixed up with the extinct Quagga because they both have zebra stripes only parts of their bodies instead their whole bodies like the zebras themselves.

I hope these animals breed well even though they only live in congo, they're very unique in their behavior and looks.
Thankfully okapi breeding programs have been very successful. After being hunted to near extinction (in the 80s they were declared extinct in the wild until one was actually photographed in the mid 90s), they have successfully been reintroduced to the wild and they are in zoos and sanctuaries all over the world.
