ART OF DARKNESS | Animated Bendy and the Ink Machine Song!

- BLIMEY. This one took a while! Believe it or not I started working on Art of Darkness not long after I completed my first Bendy and the Ink Machine song, Find the Keys! But when the channel took off I realised that I should prioritise making more regular content over one big video so I've spent the past year working on this one bit by bit between other videos. I'm so glad to finally be able to share it with you guys!
Given how long it took to make, it went through many changes. It started as a Chapter 3 song but as time went by it ended up including parts of Chapter 4 and 5 too!
A huge amount of work went into this one (over 1000 drawings!) so I want to thank everyone who helped and supported me along the way! All of the drawings, animation, lyrics and voices are my own. But if you find a spelling mistake, my girlfriend did the spell checking. ;)
If you enjoyed the video, please do share! This is a super special project for me and I'd love for everyone to get a chance to see it!
So as I now finally get to work on my next song, I hope in the mean time... You find this one Satisfactory.

LYRICS:
Boris! Meet your maker! Ah, I’ll tell you later
It seems this scene has us careening down an elevator
Must have been dreaming to think we'd make a clean escape, I-
Doubt one machine here could make it past a regulator
Swear we never had this many levels, where’s the excavator?
What’s so scary ‘bot a library and a record player?
Thought I’d find the angel in a basement more dilapidated
This is kinda tasteful, Alice tell me who’s your decorator?
I never make a lady wait, I guess you’d say that I’m a player
Angel wants a date and I would really hate to aggravate her
Boris, don’t you worry, I would never let her separate us
Hold it, where'd you go? Damn, I guess I'd better go and save him
Alice thinks that hacking up my pal is gonna medicate her
Fallacy! The treatment that this gal would need is an eraser
Rap against an animator? Alice, get back on your paper
Rhyming on the multiplane, my lyrics work on several layers
If you thought that demons were your problem right now
Well the angel’s on the stage so pipe down
If there are secrets that you want to find out
Hop on the ink machine and ride those pipes down
So you're on the path of the starving artist
But at the heart, well the art is heartless.
Ever seen a masterpiece get discarded?
Then start and depart for the art of darkness
Out of the deep dark depths below
Three ne'er-do-wells will avenge their souls
With a spanner and a wrench and a thirst to quench
Heigh-ho, it’s off to work we go
Heave-ho! Fisher’s coming, crawling out the sea foam
Giving you the Willies as I'm stepping off my steamboat
Left here to the gods and beheaded by a rod
I’ve some deadly black spots for the clod who left us below
You'll wish you headed for the bread line and never ever meddled-
With a pencil lead and bred lines. Monkey with a wrench might
Thunk you in the head, Henry can you see the headlines?
Animator dead by an enemy he designed!
There once was an Angel who swallowed a spider
It wriggled inside her and out came the Striker
Who’d have thought your silly little villain for the children
Would be killing for your heroine, so let her win or die first
If you thought that demons were your problem right now
Well the angel’s on the stage so pipe down
If there are secrets that you want to find out
Hop on the ink machine and ride those pipes down
So you're on the path of the starving artist
But at the heart, well the art is heartless.
Ever seen a masterpiece get discarded?
Then start and depart for the art of darkness
There's no need to be scared now
It's all the fun of the fairground
And I would say I'm on fair grounds
To take a little revenge now
Everybody's heard of Bertram Piedmont
Because my work pertains a certain frisson
A hurtling freefall - disturbing demons
Are out of season so must you keep on?
Are you caught in a spin?
Wurlitzer shame that your organs and limbs
Will be lost in the ink, well it’s awfully grim
Did you want to be him? Waltzer better man than you’ve ever been
It’s a downward spiral, time you felt - a
little hell up in the Helter-skelter
No help or shelter - board the ride
Don’t you know you’ve got to be this tall to DIE
So sing along to the bouncing ball
Wave your flags and renounce these halls
You may have been sacked from this pantomime
But a pal of mine wants you recalled
So march along to the count of 4
Astound at the scoundrel crowd you’ve drawn
Left stranded and damned to this mangled form
To abandon us here was an act of war
It’s laughable to think you’ll bring back the norm
We’ve ink, but no malpractice forms
‘But Henry! You never gave a crap before?’
‘Til we trapped you down ‘neath the factory floor
Clap along to the rapturous score
Three rounds down and back for more
To find the keys in chapter four
Remind me, where’ve you heard that before?
If you thought that demons were your problem right now
Well the angel’s on the stage so pipe down
If there are secrets that you want to find out
Hop on the ink machine and ride those pipes down
So you're on the path of the starving artist
But at the heart, well the art is heartless.
Ever seen a masterpiece get discarded?
Then start and depart for the art of darkness
Well I dropped in from the top and now I've got to block the
Monsters popping off of Nosferatu's rostrum
Preposterous that after this my Oscars will be posthumous
I lived for my work but I died to stop them
Stationery should be stationary, shouldn’t talk back.
I need a shrink, I’m on the brink, the ink has fought back
Thought that the apocalypse was supposed to live on horseback?
Screw that, deliverance was hidden in the Rorschach
This is a great video!! the art looks amazing, and the lyrics are great!!!

This song is legitimately amazing! It’s catchy, has lyrics that actually are compatible with the fandom it’s representing and doesn’t just rely on autotune and technological music styles (which I have nothing against but most fandom songs seem dependent on this). BATIM was like 5 years ago. I'm revisiting nearly every fandom that made my childhood. Kirby, DDLC, Pokemon, Undertale, Sonic and of course Bendy. The music from each fan base has left me completely stunned with nostalgia and its completely epic. Bendy impacted my life so much, I became obsessed with horror. And this masterpiece just expresses the true fate that Joey Drew Studios suffered after Henry got fired/or just retired. Perfect as always Stupendium. I remember when this came out like 3 years ago.
Same with me except fnaf is what got me going with horror

Today is the day I fully understood this line. A Helter Skelter is what those lighthouse-slide things at fairs and boardwalks are called. And the slide is a DOWNWARD SPIRAL. The depth of your lyrical genius will never cease to amaze me.
I know this song isn't one of the most recent, but it's truly a masterpiece. The combination of how well the lyrics go with each other and the talent of the singing, it's genuinely one of the best song I've ever listened to. Stupendium, you should be so proud of yourself for making songs as excellent as this.

Also yeah, was a bit odd to do this. But I thought I should put some memories in your comments, and put them in all rather at the time.
@@anwd8646 i'm literally in the same situation. Well, i guess this stuff just can't die...
One thing I've always loved about your videos is the absolute attention to detail and the insane levels of creativity. During Bertram Piedmont's section. "Did you want to be him" when you have your head lean out. Just the amount of frustrations I'd have dealt with in the layering to ensure that my head was above the background layer, before it shifts over to the next part and the head retracts. @InkyStory The device on screen is a multiplane camera, specifically the kind developed by Walt Disney studios in the mid-to-late 1930s. There's a video right here on CZcams, "Walt Disney Introduces the Multiplane Camera". _He_ can probably explain it better than I can, but I'll try if you don't want to go looking.
All traditional animation is made by painting all the moving parts of a scene, the characters and their body parts, for instance, on clear sheets of celluloid, layering the correct sheets on top of the motionless background to form the correct image, and then taking a picture. Do it over and over again; sooner or later you'll have a finished film.
Using the multiplane and other, generally very similar tools, animators basically animate _the background_ too, splitting it up into its own layers beneath the characters and other animated objects. This is usually done to imitate the sort of things you'd see if you were actually on a regular movie set behind a camera: panning across the scene, with things closer to you seeming to move faster than things further away (what they call "parallax"); zooming in and out; even spinning _around_ the "actors".
Watch that part of the video again a couple times and you can probably start to understand the principle. We start with a shot of the smashed elevator car, then seem to slide backwards into the library. If we pretend the scene was actually shot on a Disney-style multiplane, we'd probably start with the planes cranked up close to the camera so it can look through the library layers to the elevator car layer. Then, as we take pictures, we move each plane down lower, further from the camera, and maybe also dim the light on the elevator plane a little, to create the illusion of depth.
If you're interested, there's a scene in _Snow White_ where the Queen drinks her disguise potion and the room starts spinning. That was shot on a multiplane, probably just like the one shown here, and was accomplished by moving the background and foreground planes _sideways_ in opposite directions.
Two weeks ago my sister's suggested I should listen to this song so I looked it up on CZcams and this was the first video on the list so I played it and I was immediately hooked! The acting, the artwork and the lyrics are all pure genius! Now I listen to this song every day for an hour while i go for my walk. I put it on repeat and jam. Stupendium you are a true artist and your stupendous no pun intended lol😁I'm so obsessed with this song and this amazing video I even sing this song when I'm not watching the video thank you so very much for creating such an awesome flawless masterpiece. This song is literally stuck in my head day in and day out and i love it
2:51 is definitely , without a doubt , my favourite part , the perfect rhymes, and the beautiful animation , deserves a chef's kiss
Song starts at 0:48
But why would you skip that great intro?
Kitty Meow Meow I WONT
Only fools would skip that intro !
@@Maxbrine True.
@@hoxiipoxii56 I'm glad that you agree
Maxbrine Gaming :( you are calling me a fool
This was absolutely outstanding. I didn't want it to end. Everything was so well-done. It's jaw-dropping. Outstanding work!
The Stupendium is the only person who can get me hooked on a song about a game I've never played.
Dude, I would like to thank you for all the masterpieces you make (like, this music gives me nostalgia/hipe vibes!) so thank you so much!
[I 'm French and it is partly thanks to your music that I am learning English so once again thank you!]
Animation references I've caught:
- "Rhyming on the multiplane. My lyrics work on several layers."
Pretty self-explanatory, especially w/ the visuals. The multiplane camera was used in the early days of traditional animation.
- "Heigh ho! Off to work we go!"
The dwarves from Disney's Snow White
- "Giving you the willies as I'm stepping of my steamboat."
Disney's Steamboat Willy short.
- "Wurlitzer a shame that your organs & limbs"
Not 100% but I think this is a reference to Rudolph Wurlitzer Company, which imported & manufactured musical instruments such as pianos & organs. And particularly Wurlitzer jukeboxes were iconic during the 1920's and the decades after, some including light-up displays featuring rudimentary animation.
- "WALTzer a better man than you've ever been."
Walt Disney
- "So sing a long to the bouncing ball."
The Fleischer's "Ko-Ko Song Car-Tunes" created the now iconic bouncing ball animation convention and pioneered animation synced w/ audio in America. It could also be a double reference, as the bouncing ball exercise is a staple of animation, in teaching the principles of animation.
And the start of the video is a remake of the advertisment for Disney Land where you can see Walt talking to us about animation (I'm sorry if my english isn't perfect, I'm Belgian)
how has this gotten only 1 reply
I love you
Here 4:19 the back round of the painting is the forest from slender
Also "Fisher's coming crawling out the sea foam" alludes to the Brothers Grimm version of The Little Mermaid
You DREW all this yourself?!?! This might very narrowly outclass the song which is amazing 0_0

Thanks for the heart Stupes! :^D
There cannot be a better song than Find The Keys.

Reminds me f Josh in Lets Game It Out!..

Wow, that Bertram Piedmont makeup is amazing! Such amazing contrast in every wrinkle, it works perfectly with the art style! That alone must’ve been a lot of work, and that’s before we get to the composition, lyrics, instrumentation, voicing, animations, and editing. Plus the Joey Drew bits were absolutely perfect for the character.
Not only that, but it's an amazing reference/throwback to the Slave in the Magic Mirror, from Snow White, either as represented in the 1956 series Disneyland's episode, "Our Unsung Villains" or as represented in the 1977 episode, “Disney’s Greatest Villains”, of the series, "The Wonderful World of Disney".
Its a human face
Did you notice that one of the eyes is bigger
Bertram piedmont ist makeup no ?
I love this song
My favorite part is the Bertram Piedmont verse. The way that it sounds circular... I really can't describe it but it's so like the boss fight. The word-play is also awesome. "A little hell up in the helter-skelter." Just brilliant.
This song is stuck in the back of my mind every day. So sometimes during the day I’ll be humming this song in public.
Damn. Just.... damn. This looks like something a big studio would do. Why has the Meatly not made this the anthem of BATIM yet?
The pikmin army there is a huge field of competition
Andrew Fowler *cough cough* build our machine *cough cough*
(We need to get this vid noticed though, someone @ this at theMeatly stat!)
@@laurendyer2838 Build our Machine was not made by TheMeatly.
Kaos 44 I know, it’s by DAGames. I just meant that song’s so popular it might as well be the anthem.
It’s not the anthem because it’s to good
WE NEED MORE DREAMS
I typically loathe fan songs because I never feel like they add anything to a fandom and are just a cheap cash in on what's trending, and I braced myself for cringe.....but this was so wonderfully well made that I forgot it was a fan song. Like the food critic in Ratatouille, I felt exactly like I did when I was a kid listening to this - this was nothing short of incredible.
Felt similarly about Ad Infinitum, my first Stupendium song. Fan songs are 50/50, either really cringe or really good, thought Ad Infinitum would be cringe but damn was I proven wrong!
Edit: the “Stumendium originals” playlist is at lol69nice
This music is so fun to sing along! I love the waving feeling of the notes going up and down with some slurs. Kinda makes me want to practice writing rhymes and rhythm, from very very very deep within.
This video is so underated, the format, tempo and lyrics are just perfect. You don't even have to be a batim fan to agree that this is absolute banger
Better than most rap nowadays.
Good stuff, Mr. Mustache Man. Good stuff.
This is the only rap song I like
Man. I didn’t know Joey Drew looked so much like The Stupendium...
I know it's like they're the same person or something
I know. Is Joey Drew his grandfather or something?
Is that a good thing yay I don't think so
@@yellowmello1223 Joey Drew was a shipbuilder before he was an animator ;)
Maybe there related?
3:29 - 4:10 Can't get enough of this part
Haven't played the game, but watching the animation for this song, and discovering small pieces of lore every time, gives me more joy then I would probably get playing

Can we all just take a moment to praise this man's phenomenal American accent?
Note: I'm British, so any American viewers feel free to politely contradict this statement should you disagree.
Anywho, phenomenal work with consistently entertaining songs and animations. Have a good day!
As a genuine American, I had no idea this guy was British from listening to this song, he does the accent very accurately
No, his accent is spectacular.
I didn't realize he wasn't american
As an American, I was pleasantly surprised at the accuracy to the accent.

This is such a great song that I've decided to perform it for my school talent show! Truly a wonderful song on your part, even several years later. Wish me luck internet!
