This album was named for the title of the first Black Student Conference we had at Oberlin College, where brother Abdul Wadud was a student at the time. Brother Abdul, brother Joseph X and brother Hassan (son of the famous Birmingham, Alabama musician and music scholar Mr. Amos Gordon) taught us so much and continually raised our level of consciousness during this period, through their many performances on campus, and friendships. These brothers and their music were far, far, far ahead of their time. We were fortunate to be in their midst.
I just purchased the newly reissued vinyl version pressed by Gotta Grove Records from Juno Records in London. The sound is incredible. So glad that I bought this both for the incredible music and for the story behind this album which was originally pressed in Cleveland Ohio. Love it.
I have it too...its an amazingly well done reissue, not to boast, but I have a great vinyl playback system and this reissue is how reissues should be done! I am so glad people took the time and made the effort to bring this important piece of American musical and social history back to life. Also grateful for the post here of the original pressing.
I just ordered a copy from a different vendor anxiously awaiting its arrival!
A much-coveted and totally blasting set: it’s unsurprising to discover, for example, that Numero Group’s Rob Sevier listed Al-Fatihah as his dream reissue in an interview with Dusted Magazine. The Black Unity Trio were based in Oberlin, Ohio, and their line-up was Yusuf Mumin (aka Joe Phillips) on alto sax, Ron DeVaughn (aka Abdul Wadud) on cello and bass, and Haasan Al-Hut on percussion. Wadud went on to become one of the most significant cellists in free jazz (having made a number of appearances in this list) while Phillips only turns up alongside Norman Howard on Burn Baby Burn.
For anyone following Wadud’s thread, this is the significant starting point. But it’s also one of the more sublime free jazz records you’ll likely hear, cut from the same cloth as some of the more questing, spiritualized ESP titles, but with a fundamental rawness that gives cuts like ‘Birth, Life & Death’ and ‘In The Light Of Blackness’ a ferocious focus - the way the former opens the album with gentle, lyrical runs, before nose-diving into free playing particularly from Mumin/Phillips, comes across like an object lesson in how to do this kind of music right. Someone reissue this monster! [www.factmag.com/2014/05/21/the-25-best-dub-techno-tracks-of-all-time/19/]

Abdul Wadud's recordings with Julius Hemphill are also sublime, especially Dogon A.D. and Oakland Duets.
Even during the cocophonous stages the music strikes me as soothing and wholesome. What a journey!
Gets unbelievable around 6 minutes in. Some of the most frenzied playing I've ever heard. Incredible.
Thanks for posting. I always liked Bitches Brew, from a distance, and stumbled in this here, fell instantly in love, went back to Bitches, listened to it twice straight through the other day, fell in love, back here for more
Thank you for making this available to listen to.
From start to finish this is pure bliss...Thank-You.
Love it - keep coming back
beautiful...abdul wadud, you are missed

Merci
Sun Ra that you can light !!!
WOW ...... !!
Wow!!!!!!!!!
This is a holy grail record, can anyone explain WHY this is not available in some sort of reissue? as a physical record, it reminds me of several old blues 78's; if you can even FIND a copy they are all played to DEATH...every time I have come across a copy (not often) the record itself is blown out...obviously a compliment to the power of the music! It is nice to have this uploaded here but I would love to have this for myself, and for anyone else who comes by and needs enlightenment.
@O.D. Jones you can download it
Supposedly the surviving members are blocking any attempts at a reissue. Why? Not sure.
There's a cassette reissue of this on discogs which is an unofficial/bootleg release and is blocked from the sellers market. Although, you can still contact privately with the seller and make a deal.
Yes, you can tell how rare this is. In 2012, the original vinyl was auctioned on Popsike, and has been sold for whopping $1025.

Prova a venderlo!
if by "commercial" you mean more SOULFUL and LISTENABLE, then yes, it is both.
