I've heard some people say this is one of John Williams' lesser soundtracks, but I think it's one of the best because of how unique it sounds. As I understand, Williams began composing the score while there was not enough footage from the film, so he worked based upon his own interpretation of what the movie would be like. If that's the case, I think it's amazing, because there's something in the music that sounds more akin to the tone and thrill of the original novel than the film itself.

The book was about the top dog (in both influece and military might) nation of the time being curbstomped by an alien invader. If adapted to a modern setting, it wouldn't make much sense to keep the story on England. Of course, i'd rather have Spielberg made the movie as a period piece instead.

I thought this movie was great for it showed a portrayal of 'fear', upon a force that we humans are not capable of controlling due to the inferiority of our technological advances. This movie scared me shitless when I first watched it and couldn't sleep for 2 months. Back then, there were many movies that always portrayed heroism. This was different.

Replying to MrDetwaa, this film was different because it showed from a civilians perspective what they'll actually do if there ever was an alien invasion. Sure there are some plot holes and that annoying girl you just want to snap her neck, but I found this film to be an adequate portrayal of mass fear of millions (maybe even billions) and it made it unique because of it. Another is from what I remember, I saw videos why many viewers were disappointed from the film since it wasn't like the book.

@TheBeardieandtheLeo Well that's what the book is about. The movie is completely different. It scared me too. From how horrible it was. There just wasn't much in it. I expected a lot from a brilliant director like Speilberg. He could have made it a lot greater and more interesting. Tom Cruise ruined it for me too. He's too full of himself and that attitude shows in his films.

That's not the point. The theme of Harry Potter was good against evil, but it was still set in a castle in Scotland. The theme of Batman was a man putting his body and mind to it's peak to become something more, but was still set in Gotham. Regardless of what the themes behind WotW might be, the book made a lot of references to real places in London that was lost in Spielburg's piss-poor adaptation of such a great literary work. No doubt he would also try to set Les Miserables in the US too.
