Much as Brazil was a former Portuguese colony, which broke away and became vastly more powerful and influential than it's mother country, we're in real danger of seeing Laith's haircut abandon him, and start its own CZcams channel. I can tell you that Portugal managed to go from one of the most developed countries to an economic backwater between 1700 and 1900.
And Estonia is managing to become Western European in 30 years 🙂

Ah yes, Portugal, the balkan country of Western Europe. I still dont know how that happend in history, but someone may be able to tell me. Also the fact that armies just change fronts for no reason is definitely the most annoying part of this game. Maybe make Lübeck or Denmark a colonial power next, that would be a fun challenge.

It's mainly a list of the usual culprits, incompetence, corruption, ideological revolution (gone okay ish tbf), self absorbed dictator in crucial time of economic growth. Slow to adopt new technologies, very rural, very religious, colonial wars that burned money and men for nothing, yada yada.
Oh and for unusual ones, we got heavily exploited by both spanish and spanish enemies when throne fell to the spaniards. Portugal was super advanced and Lisbon the capital of Europe. In the middle of the 18th century, there is a huge earthquake that destroys the city and a minister of the kingdom (Marquês de Pombal) rebuilds the city, gaining fame and power.
At the time, the owners of education were the Jesuits, who allowed access even to the common people. Well, our friend Pombal expelled the Jesuits and promised reforms in education, this did not happen and education became something only for the rich. Here you basically lose the human substance of the nation, something that you never recovered again only at the end of the 20th century. The French invasions in the 19th century didn't help much either.
The monarchy ends and after a few years with the arrival of the dictator Salazar you have an interesting economy, a rich country with lots of positive reforms, the problem was that he didn't share this wealth with the poorest people and closed Portugal to the world. 1974 revolution where basically communist/socialism took over.
We joined the EEC in 1985 and there was an economic boom in the country, but that also ended up fading away. In 2024, with 50 years of a socialist pseudo-democracy, we are becoming increasingly worse off economically, there is no boost in culture, etc., etc.
The country's days are numbered.

I played portugal like 3 days ago? Took 90% of africa. Got super lucky and UK went into war and offered me their kenya colony after I already took THE ENTIRE boers and coast. About 7 years later I alligned with France and took South Africa away, it was over at that point. Just snowballed and even took back Brazil and a fat chunk of Qing also got multiculturism earlier than I ever have ORGANICALLY. Was what I call a GOD RUN
