On the Southern high plains we can get 1000-1200 hr of 32 to 45 degree Vernalization . Does S Dakota stay dormant too many hrs to have Veralization of some varieties of winter wheat. The HRW we plant needs about 750. I learned 50 years ago in plant physiology class that HRW does not need a dormancy. Most farmers think it does.

how much better does winter do on average compared to winter wheat? If your winter wheat fails can you just plant over the top with spring wheat in the same harvest year?

You can always replant spring wheat if winters fail.

what about the difference in the grain aspect of it, protein levels, for example? Who is the end user of Spring Wheat? Also why does winter wheat not smother and die off with snow cover, but yet it does when flooded with water?

@@AgPhD really neat you guys answering my question on your podcast and telling me about it! Thanks...very helpful. We've been growing winter wheat my entire (44 y/o) here in WNY and it's been the past 10 years I've really come to learn how finicky WW can be to yield a good crop. This winter we were unusually warm 30-40 degrees most of the winter, with exceptions to a couple cold spells below 25 degrees. We were warmer and drier in March when it was too early to get N on for fear of loss, and April has come off very wet and cool...when we'd like to get N on, but even walking across our lawns is like walking on a sponge. Wheat is getting yellow looking.
