Plumbago, Plumbago Auriculata, Cape Plumbago, Sky Flower are just a few of the names this stunning perennial goes by.
Thanks for stopping by and learning about this beautiful blooming sprawling shrub. The Plumbago can be grown in zone 9-11 and there are between 10-20 different kind. This one is stated above! I love this one because of that blue-phlox color and a plus is it blooms all year long. It is a native to South Africa, that right there should tell you it is drought tolerant and loves hot, hot, hot, heat. You can find the Plumbago in the US growing year round in the southern parts of Texas and Florida. Plumbago does best in full sun to part shade in well drained soil diseases are rare, and an be very leggy. If you have this in zone 7-8 make sure it is in a pot and you cut it back in put in the garage to protect from frost & freeze. The plus with this shrub is it will attract
butterflies and hummingbirds.

Hi I am South African and live in the UK
They told me at the garden centre that I had to keep it indoors.
I am 71 and grew up with Plumbagos
In South Africa they will grow anywhere and live on summer rains and are evergreen.
You need to prune them in autumn and can cut them the shape you want them because they are tough.
In the UK I was told to keep it indoors in winter.
Did that the first year and then left it outside in a rather small container.
It is huge this summer and flowers everywhere.
It is in full sun, but I think the container is too small so it will wilt, but is fine after watering.
It has a sheltered spot but I am going to try one in the garden.
Makes me really homesick.
@@anitaswart. You might have gotten ahold of the Plumbago that is an annual and it is a potted plant. That’s why they told you to keep it indoors.

I'm in NW San Antonio, 8a, large plot under a tree, gets lots of western 🌞 but freezes to ground most years, is already grown up 3 ft as of 4/9/23
Very hardy here. Need to propagate soon as would love elsewhere in yard and neighbors want some too.
I am in zone 7 and i have a plumbago in a container. It loves me and I love it! Question, how much should I cut it back when I get ready to bring it in? And what is the lowest temperature it can stand cause my garage gets pretty cold! I was just gonna bring it into the house for the whole winter season

Hi! Thanks for your comment. In this video I do tell you how to achieve a beautiful plant according to where you live. This is a drought tolerant plant that takes little to achieve those sticking flowers. This is a bush in the southern hot and humid states. You may want to listen closely to the points I give to achieve it. Or just let it go because I do state that this is a shrub perennial not an annual plant.

I bought a little one that was doing well and then put it in my balcony (zone 9) didn't repot...and it started wilting! Added water and indoors, it came back, then I put it back outside, and it started wilting again and I put it back indoors and now it's not coming back :/

I love plumbago. Your plant looks so pretty. How long have you had it? I was hoping you'd tell or show us how to prune it once it loses its blooms and goes dormant. Mine is in the ground in 9b and still has a few blooms on it. I want to shape it up as it's going wild. Should I wait until December or so?
Hi 🙂 Was that just One plant that grew that full? If so how old is it? I purchased 3 small ones from our local nursery & planted all 3 in a big pot about the size of yours.(spaced 5-6 inches apart, Miracle grow potting soil, good drainage, and hv watered them with MG food/fertilizer 2x) It’s been a month & They Still look like they did the day I bought them. Each plant has ONE single ‘stalk’ about 10-12inches tall w/a few blooms at the top of each. I’ve planted several things that I can see are growing great, But This is my absolute FAVORITE & I Really want it to start thriving. Do u have any suggestions? TIA ✌️❤️☺️
Hi! I wish mine was that compact now. I will have to an update when It hits the year mark. This is a shrub and can reach 6 - 10 ft tall and spread 8 - 10 ft wide. They are fast growing and love the south (Texas, Florida) they continue to bloom for me all year given they have have by the abundance. The issue seems to be given that their are many variety's i don't know which one you got. but planting 5 - 6 inches a part is way to close. Mine was in a 10 gallon pot and sat in it for 6 weeks before transplanting it to a pot in the exact spot as in the video. mine again is the shrub. The one for a pot can not be poted closer that 36 inches because they need room to breath and spread. it is a plant and for get it type. I think you have them to close to spread
@@beckymiller4441 thanks for replying, there’s was no exact info just a tag that said Plumbago & the flower center owner said it was a ‘shrub’ type plant as You described. It looks like yours But just One skinny stalk on each and not shrub looking at all. The stem is green and very delicate.. frustrating not having correct info on plants/flowers especially whn spending a lot of time & money. I’m having an issues with some hybrid sunflower that was mislabeled 🤦🏼♀️
I did buy Another plant that actually said Sky Flower on it but it looks like a Real shrub. It looks nothing like our plumbago tho I’ll get the other name that was on That tag in the morning

On my sky flower shrub it says Duranta Erecta on the tag. I haven’t checked through all the Plumbago types u listed yet but it looks exactly like yours. Maybe I just need more patience bc I just noticed All 3 plants Finally have New stems growing from each! AND ITS WAY More stiff today like a shrub! Yea! I swear I didn’t see them yesterday & they were so fragile. it’s like they grew new 6in Branches over night 😳

They grow as a perennial would grow they get zapped to the ground when it gets cold. It’s everywhere in my neighborhood , I live in Houston Texas zone 9a and they all came back after the 2021 Texas freeze. If we don’t get cold they stay evergreen if not they die to the ground and come back fresh from the ground and flower from may all the way to the first frost. They grow about 30 by 30 inches when they come back fresh from the ground. If we don’t get a hard frost the get bigger . I’m originally from Morocco and over there they grow as high as 12 feet tall. They vine just like a star jasmine would grow. I prefer it when they come back fresh from the ground that way you don’t have to train it they just grow like a loose shrub . Give it a try it’s beautiful and care free
It does great in Houston. If it were to get hit by frost, it will come back just like hibiscus.

Very drought tolerant. It's been so long since I had one so I can't remember if it dropped It's leaves.
I forget the name of an upright plant that has yellow flowers, but they look great with this shrub.
Do you deadhead the plumbago?
Yes! I do trim back branches when they turn brown or to keep it in shape. Because they can get overgrown.
