What I love about Cam is they made him seem stereotypical at first...then you realize he's more masculine than Mitch in every other way. I love them, they're my favorite on this show
I think that's part of the genius of the show. They definitely play off stereotypes, but each of the characters on the show are much more complex than they seem on the surface. It's very much like real life, and reminds us to not always judge a book by its cover.
I like the Cam character but do wish there were more than just nelly stereotypes on TV. I'm gay, but I don't swish while listening to Liza. A lot of us are pretty butch.

I think hetero people with a negative attitude towards gays, can "manage" a type like Cam or Mitch, because they are so stereotypical and different, the contrast suits their need to feel a distance from them. If there is a guy who is "just like themselves" who is gay, I think they feel very confronted, because they feel safer when gays are portrayed like a curiosity for them to laugh at.
