Angron really is the only Primarch that the Emperor truly failed. Magnus, Lorgar, especially Horus. The Emperor really tried to shape them into loyalists while respecting them. Angron? Saving him would have meant taking that choice away from him. I think this is really self aware of Angron, since he feels its in his nature to resist but also seems trapped to not be able to do so, he puts his sons in the situations to do what he wishes he could. When angron comes for varus and asks him "do you have something to tell me?" Varus assumes that the primarch heard his outcry. But when varus starts to ask why, asking why he would be betrayed, Angron gets annoyed and silences him. Like he's specifically looking for one thing from him and is irritated he didnt get it. But then Varus says it. The thing he wanted to hear from all the others, who wasted their last breaths asking useless questions. Getting the courage to finally speak up and speak his true mind. Angron gave Varus approval, because at that moment, he became a true son to Angron. He HATED him, just as Angron hated his own father. Thats why he did all he had done to his legion. To show them why he had to betray the emperor. To turn them into the rabid dogs the emperor turned angron into. This story, cry havok. This reminds me of another story about Angron I’m having trouble finding again. I don’t remember if it was official or fan-made.
It was about the Emperor confiding in a Custodes that he intentionally led Angron to hate him, as a means to prolong Angron’s life. It was presented that, basically, the Nails were in too deep, and the Emperor hadn’t the means at the time to safely remove them. But he wagered he might later.
The Emperor was very confident that if he took away Angron’s motivation-the protection of his gladiators and hated of the Riders-by intervening in that battle, his son’s anger and bloodlust would subside, and his empathic tendencies would take over. And as such, the nails would multiply in their toll on his mind, furious that Angron no longer did as they wanted.
And so the Emperor gave Angron a new target for his hatred: himself, if only as a means to buy time to try and fix things later.
The Emperor compared what the nails had transformed Angron into to a shark; to a predator that would die if it stopped moving, stopped hunting, stopped fixating on a target.
Does this ring a bell for anyone else here, lol?

Brother-Captain...this piece you've breathed life into...The despair, the rage, the anguish of the betrayed loyal World Eaters...it is a kind of perfection I've longed to hear told and for this, I thank you! They were a legion cursed by fate with a Primarch they tried so hard to please. This narration encapsulates that rage and anguish flawlessly. The relentless pain of the Nails, the will needed to keep them at bay, the question every one of the loyalists that stood upon the scorched ground of Isitivan III...You bring glory to our beloved lore Brother-Captain and for this, WE SALUTE YOU!!!!
FOR THE BROKEN PRIMARCH AND WHAT HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN!
FOR THE LOYAL SONS OF THE EMPEROR!
    AVE IMPERATOR!!!!

Absolutely fantastic work! It's pieces like this that cause my admiration for Angrons torment as a truly broken son, to grow. In the brief moment he speaks you can truly feel his sadness over the dishonor he feels at being alive. Very well done indeed.

25:32 I listened to these last 5 minutes over and over. It's sooooo good. I can totally understand Angron and yet I also can understand the loyalists. If only they had tried to learn more about their Primarch instead of following him without question. At least Kharn stood up to him somewhat, but even he couldn't completely do it. Blind loyalty and obediency are never good.

The Istvan story I’ve always wanted is one of shifting perspective. What did the Emperor’s children think when he heard one of their captains telling them to seek shelter, did they gain an epiphany about the divisions in the legion? What did the World Eater think when just moments away, locking eyes with a human rebel in an underground bunker on Istvan 3 did the shockwaves of the first virus bombs shook the ground above him? What did the Death Guard think when his brothers in the warrior lodge found his loyalty to the Primarch wanting, an instant before his body is consumed by the life eater virus? What ran through the mind of the Son of Horus as he heard his father, the War Master, betrayed the Emperor? Personal conflicts and mental breakdowns are why I’m here.

Can't believe I discovered 40k only a few months ago
I've always loved fantasy, Star Wars (Not current canon), Lord of the Rings, Warcraft, Starcraft, Warhammer Fantasy, Runeterra, Westeros and so on
But 40k is definitely, by far my favorite and its not even close
Angron has one of the most interesting stories, what a shame he was made a Demon and what a shame he had the butchers nails implanted, hope somehow, he gets reverted to what he should have been, by the Emperor, although it is utterly extreamly unlikely.

They gave themselves over to the implantation of the nails to be closer to their primarch. Believing him to be better than a high-rider. Perhaps the sergeant's last words gave Angron pause. A moment of doubt. A moment, before it was washed away by the nails.
