This song is a pearl of the French songbook: It is a French-Canadian cyberpunk-rock opera called “Starmania”, written in 1976 by Michel Berger (France) and with lyrics by Luc Plamondon (Canada) and immortalized in the voices of Daniel Balavoine, Diane Dufresne and Gregory Lemarchal. The theme of the song is depression: In the 2021 version, Dimash faithfully and brilliantly presents a sentimental and melancholy interpretation! As the singing decisions follow the original structure of the song, which serves to show the psychological instability of the afflicted character: From the chest voice to the head voice and then to falsetto, the author sought to show a broad need to overcome a moment of despair and the pretense of accepting to reach a higher perspective! Dimash, currently at his concerts, dedicates this song to his friends and acquaintances who have departed this world!

Dimash simply sings to the soul. The lyrics are not necessary to feel the emotion he conveys. I always listen without lyric translation first. I find reading the lyrics distracts from the emotion conveyed by his singing. I go back for the translation after.

Congratulations on discovering Dimash and his magnificent voice!
(The striking French lyrics can be changed to English via the CC button, if you wish.)
Dimash performed this without an audience, as part of his Digital Concert during the pandemic. It must have been particularly difficult to sing without the feedback from his Dears (fans)!

Thanks for reacting to my favorite vocalist! He IS perfection! When he first sang this to a Chinese audience during a competition in 2017, he had to wow the listeners and show his phenomenal vocal range. As he matured, however, you can hear more of the emotional angst in this song. As you listen to more of his songs, you'll see he can sing in a variety of genres. My three favorite songs are Samaltau (a folksong sung in Kazakh), Ogni Pietra/Olimpico (two names for an epic empowerment song sung in Italian), and Ikanaide (a "don't leave me" song sung in Japanese--he origianlly sang this in Chinese with the title Autumn Strong). Again, thanks for your positive and appreciative reaction! A Dear from California, USA. ❤

Yes, the lyrics help one to understand the vocal choices in this song but I agree that it can be tricky to read lyrics and absorb the music at the same time.
    Great reaction.❤️👍
Few point out the extra effects like the lighting choices which add so much to the rollercoaster of emotions.
Dimash has a voice like velvet, sometimes polishing the extremes in range and yet other times undulating within the comfortable waves.
Dimash is like a box of expensive chocolates as every song is very different yet exquisite in flavour.
Thank you for insights and observations.❤
    🥰🥰Hugs from Canada🇨🇦

How can you critique Dimash without using the word “range”?
