Three things made us stop going there (1) my kids hated the electronic pass cards. The found the coin tokens far more fun. (2) it was operating on such a cheap budget that they could barely fix anything, and it started to be run down, (3) that same cheap budget made them get the cheapest employees and lowest class customers, and it basically became a bad "neighborhood" in the stores.

    Franchise rules:
    1. If a store is losing money, either find out why and fix it, or close the store.
    2. Always be looking for ways to cut costs without degrading customer experience.
    3. Keep up with the changing times.
    4. Expect large scale problems such as recessions, and be prepared to weather them.
    5. Listen to your customers, but also listen to your employees who work directly with them.

i remember during the pandemic, Chuck e Cheese survived by selling pizza through door dash, postmates and uber eats. they listed as Pasquale's pizza(because there was no flashing lights, giant arcade games and other stimuli to distract people from the fact that they have lousy pizza) a few outraged delivery people blew the whistle when they found out Pasquale's pizza was just chuck e cheese pizza, it was kind of a scandal.

The Chuck E. Cheese story is one that I share in my high school Business Management class. It was a personal situation that my father experienced in the '80's He had bought shares of Chucky Cheese and when they went backrupt he lost all his money. Fast forward to today (2022)...we are getting ready to celebrate my granddaughter's 5th birthday at one of the few Chucky Cheese locations left in my area. The last time we went (4 years ago), the older granddaughter was 8 and she was disapointed because of the games and she could only get cheap toys with her tickets. This upcoming visit will probably be our last, which makes me sad as I have great memories of taking MY children to CEC. The end of an era.

They approached the creator of the showbiz animatronics, Aaron Fechter, and asked to buy off his characters. I worked here for almost a decade. I'll tell you what went wrong. They changed the pizza recipe to make it easier and cost less in labor. For years we would make the dough from scratch ball it up, then rise it and roll it out and rise it again. The pizza was fantastic.
No one is going to pay 10$ for a crappy tasting pizza.
They then cut out the ball pit.
They then cut out the tubes.
So all day hang outs at chuck e cheeses went out the window. I would spend more money over a day than just an hour visit easily.
They got rid of token and did the cards. Tokens was one of the most fun part. Hearing it clank like a casino jackpot was addicting.
They cut every corner from 2006 to now to maximize profits and it went into the toilet with every penny they saved.

I don't know about that as far as pizza quality. Kids tend to like crappy pizza alright and parents are going there for the kids. Hell, bowling alleys I've been to don't have very good food at a high price and I see plenty people getting it.
I think it has more to do with kids having access to high quality games at home. Arcades in general have been hurt from that.

Last I went (four months before the pandemic) I was extremely unimpressed. The animatronics were dead, busted, not operating. To entertain these *children* the staff (too few and overworked) put on a *vhs tape* on a television likely yanked from a 1990s classroom. The place was an absolute trash heap, nobody seen attempting to tidy it, and probably 2/3 of the games were down. If the company exits our daily life and enters forgotten history, it’s because they didn’t invest money into bigger and better attractions and instead cruise controlled off a cliff. Constantly cutting costs never prospered anybody.
And yes, kids want some gotdang tokens, not a gotdang subway pass. Give them the filthy pirate treasure they crave, gotdangit.

Back in the 80’s, there was a Chucky Cheese here in Connecticut. It had an entrance for adults, and also an entrance for kids, meaning a set of regular doors, and a set of small doors. There was also a Burger King Castle that had animatronic band of Monkeys that would constantly play the “Birthday” song by the Beatles. I know this, because not only did I have a birthdate celebration there myself, I have a big family, so I went to many birthday parties . And yes, the staff constantly kicked me off stage for messing with the animatronic monkeys. I always wondered what happened to the band. 🤔

My wife and I used to really enjoy taking my sons, my nieces, and my nephews to Chuck E. Cheese. They could run around, enjoy themselves, play some games, and have some pizza. My wife and I enjoyed doing the same. My extended family’s kids could hang out with us for a while and they be out of their parent’s hair. My sons enjoyed the company of all their cousins. All the kids are grown up now. I kinda miss those times.
Covid and social distancing killed CEC off during a time when their financial situation was already fragile. They were too deep in debt and they couldn’t make any money. I remember both from back in the 80s. Liked the look and feel of Chuck E Cheese more, as the Show Biz tended to be smaller with cheaper games and a much goofier animatron show, but when it came to the Pizza, Show Biz was way better. One of my favorite specialty pizzas I ever had was at a Show Biz. Think it might have been called the Aloha Pizza, which was a variant of their Hawaiian Pizza. Had Pineapple, Canadian Bacon, Shrimp and almond shavings. Only place I ever seen almonds offered on Pizza and I been to some pretty unusual pizza places in my life. A couple that come to mind are Frank's Pizzaria that was located in Crystal Springs, California. That's the Crystal Springs Village in San Mateo county and not the one near Sacramento. Frank's would put anything on a pizza you wanted if they could find it at the safeway across the street. The other really wild pizza place I don't remember the name of but it was in Tacoma, Washington and specialized in seafood pizzas and is the only place I've ever had a pizza with crab on it.

So fun fact: I used to work as a security guard for a shopping area that contained a Chuck E. Cheese. Guess which place found a corpse in their bathroom right after closing.

      @LilyGrace1990 Před 3 lety +218

Okay it seems people want the story here. So again, I was the security guard for the whole plaza, not Chuck E. Cheese itself, so I wasn't in the store when it happened, but I was doing my usual rounds, all was well, I went to the back to write down that all was well the previous hour, and I went back out. Suddenly there are police cars everywhere and an ambulance. Naturally, I'm confused. I was just out there and everything seemed fine. So I went to talk to the employees outside.
What had happened was, after closing, one of the male employees went into the boys' room to clean it. Usual closing time stuff. Except he found a man's body and a second man who was so high he was unresponsive. From what they could tell, they both went into the bathroom, injected themselves with something, and one of them died from the overdose. Neither man had any children in the restaurant, thank goodness. What possessed these two men to go into a Chuck E. Cheese bathroom and shoot themselves up with drugs (I think it was heroin but I don't remember if I found that out or if it was a theory someone had) remains a mystery, but I was there 2 hours past the end of my shift getting all the information I could about what happened so I could fill out a report on it. Far as I know, the second man survived. I saw them taking the body out under a white cloth and everything. No one there knew either person in the bathroom. The employees were pretty shaken up but I checked in later and they were okay. I was surprised at how okay they were, actually. I guess this isn't the worst thing they've seen.
This was summer 2016 in the Gaithersburg Square shopping center in Maryland. I just looked it up and I can't find any news coverage on it, but I very vividly remember this so I know I didn't make it up. I remember finding it morbidly funny that out of every place on that plaza, it was Chuck E. Cheese that gave me the craziest incident I'd ever witnessed on that job. I don't work there anymore though.

The tubes and hideaway spots also stimulated my imagination quite a bit. Overall I’m sad to see it’s doing so poorly, I like to think there were ways the company could’ve been improved/ saved but I can also see the logic behind thinking that it’s a dying business model.
