- Attorney and former President of Solar Records Virgil Roberts discusses the rise and fall of Death Row Records in the early to late 90's. He discusses the falling out between Dr. Dre and Suge Knight, revealing why Dre left to go start Aftermath Records. Roberts also talks about the legal troubles that virtually bankrupted Death Row and how Tupac took death row to the next level. Watch above.

This guy has the best stories/information.
Lol, this guy sits there calm and has a good memory of everything and it seems pretty accurate. I like hearing him.
Imagine how huge Death Row would have been if they would have run it like a business.
Woulda been a multi billion dollar company and alot of ppl would still be alive
Og_Deadbolt They would have probably been the modern-day Motown but for rap music.
Eminem comes to Death Row. 50 comes to Death Row. Game comes to Death Row. Kendrick comes to Death Row.
I would’ve paid this dude 500 grand a year to run the company
If Pac would have squashed beef with Dre alot alot alot of money and classic tracks could have been made
Sebastian Ace no it wouldn't Dre work too slow for Pac
I agree, two talented... but different types of guys.
MrWARBUCKS24 a lot of people go off what Pac said and believe Dre works slow but Dre wasn't feeling deathrow by the time Pac got there. Dre stopped coming around because he didn't like the environment and the fact that Suge was starting to sign artists which was supposed to be Dre"s job. Virgil Roberts just told you that Dre had left Dr in his mind long before he actually left.
Death Row Records was supposed to be Dr. Dre's record label. Not Suge.
Dre no longer wanted to be apart of deathrow even before pac lol he basically left 5-6 months after pac got outta jail
Johnny J,that's rite dnt for get that dude.homboy needs more credit
Maxavillain Moltisanti Reggie Wright Jr. shitted on Johnny J on bomb podcast smh.
Wow, wow, wow 😲 10,000 Masters!!! We need to hear these unheard tracks!
These Virgil Roberts interviews should be No. 1 on any list about that era. Suge brought the Pirus into the company and it got to a point where they scared him, so he brought in Reggie Wright, Jr., and the cops to protect him.
yep, crooked cops
Johnny J's estate must surely be worth in the hundreds of millions. But that death row scene was so dysfunctional who knows what his family is getting
last time I was this early Death row Records was untouchable
daaaaaamn
These interviews are some of the most important. No ignorant gang bangers trying to act and talk tough. From 9:15 is so so important to the history and strength of the Deathrow catalog. Im losing track...time to give the full interview
Suge knight could’ve easily been a billionaire if he had played his cards right…
Wrong, if he wouldn’t of kicked baby lane he would’ve been good
Johnny J was a beast man RIP great man
What was Johnny j cause of death?
Virgil Roberts done gave the same answers on 100 different Death Row Documentaries
Karl Keels He’s consistent unlike some flip floppers like Snoop.
I miss the fuck outta the Death Row era!!
Its always interesting to hear every1's view on what happened...
Some great knowledge in this part.
For someone who wasn't a gangster, Suge had people like Elvis Presley; I'm all shook up, mm hmmmm. Apparently he had good connections, knew real street dudes growing up.
@3:33 every leader knows it's not the strength of his army that keeps things going. It's strength his army See's in him.
very good insight, I love these death row war stories
Anybody payed attention to the "he got assassinated" then vlad switched it to killed ?
Gang members do assassinate each other. No conspiracy theory please
Pac got killed for being down for his homies, which is some gang shit that he had to pay for. Don't believe the CT bullshit
the anybody hear what he said he said he got assassinated
Orlando can assassinate someone, so what about it?
@@whatwhat3432523Shut up idiot
Orlando didn't shoot nobody fool
If Dre an Suge would squash there beef alot of money could be made and alot of good music from back in the day can get released
Sebastian Ace lol but that will NEVERRRRRR happen
A lot of Great Music was released, and a lot of Money was made, unfortunately for Suge it was all released by Dre and all the money went to Dre.
They didn't buy dre out, he left with NOTHING and started all over. Dre said he left with his Health and Suge took his half.
You are confusing yourself. He didn't have no new partner. I think the person you are thinking about is Jimmy Iovine from interscope. Death Row was already under Interscope. What Jimmy did was give Dre his own label Aftermath still under Interscope and he gave his share up to Suge.
when did Nelson Mandela speak on Suge??
urbanflavorz hahaha you watched Straight outta Compton too much. No one in their fucking mind would leave empty hand. DRE needed money so they gave him money to start another company. You don't know shit about the business side of music so sit your ass down
That wasn't even in St8 outta compton so you lunchin. Dre said that himself back when it happened. Interscope/Jimmy Iovine gave him money to start Aftermath. But he got nothing for his 50% share of Death Row. They took that from him.
How the fuck y'all know what really happened. Were y'all there? Don't nobody know what Dre left with except Dre,Suge
Real history! Thanks Vlad for keeping the legacy alive. Hip Hop is universal!!!!!!!
This dude went to my school. His name is now on the school.
4:15 everyone notice how he looks away when vlad says tupac ends up dying....he knows something
R.I.P. JOHNNY J
JOHNY J RIP 🙏 PURE LEGEND
This guy is on point.
So there's still unreleased 2pac records.. I see why Snoop wants to run the label. There's thousands of songs from artists in them archives.
Yo something about his eyes when pac is mentioned.
Solar Records put out The Whispers
That's the kid who played on good times who couldn't hear😂
Vegas incident was the swift transition in Death Row.
dude looks like clark kent
he said Suge would Tax a artist by making them record a song. And he said he got a song with Jayz. no wonder Jayz was scared back then. i wanna hear the masters!
Businesses malpractices and gain if the corporate professional
ya naaoow ...
I honestly believe he was doing it to save face too. I don't know if it's because he was apart of the assassination or because he didn't want to look soft in front of his boys, but those weren't big kids.
If part of the assassination was him nearly gettin assassinated then I guess so
The thug shit was fucking up Dre's internal harmony.
(2045)
Vlad; So Virgil Roberts was your great grandfather did he tell you any Death Row stories?
So basically at the end of the day the Jew won (Interscope). All this beef between black men (also exacerbated by outside forces) the white “Jew” basically benefited from all of it in the end. This is a lesson my brothers!
No he lost his empire to a sista he tried to play and not return what he owed.
youtubeabuser
Ive heard fro so many people that half those deathrow songs in the later period were not done by Dre. Pac even said so explicitly
Keeping unsavory characters around you in your circle even though you aren't a street dude
Eventually it's a matter of time before you get caught up in the lie down with dogs & you will end up with fleas saying
Actually happening to you
DAZ!!!
That's the only producer vlad knew to say. He doesn't know about
j.flexx
DJ quik
Johnny j
Big hutch(influenced g funk)
Kurt cocaine
Who produced nigga nature by 2pac?
Dre and Snoop Dogg are the biggest studio gangsters in history of Hip Hop. Honorable mention - Ice Cube.
Suge as fucked as he is, brah is real. So have to respect that.
Mc Mcx come say that to there face
Did he say biggie? As in biggie recorded a song with death row?
Mar Jones As they were friends at first I assume he means that they did music before and Tupac had a copy of it. But like he said just because they had the music, legally they didn't have the right to release it.
Mar Jones Biggie was cool with Death Row when Snoop had his murder was case release party in NYC Biggie and Cease was there
@@tywanjames4427 right
release those masters
Vlad is getting closer to having his idol Suge on his show. Id have paid top dollars for tickets to that. Vlad asking questions and Suge saying "yaaaa" and giving Vlad the eye.
These Death-row stories are intriguing. Love me some Tupac.
He doesn't explain the contract that Kenner had signed by Tupac to release 3 albums. Kenner was managing Death Row but he states in this video that Death Row technically didnt own Tupacs records because interscope did. So what happened with that contract and did this effect relationships Kenner had with Tupac? I say this because some people say it was Kenner that had Tupac killed. If he didnt get his money from Tupac not living up to the contract, I could see why that would have left a bad taste in Kenners mouth since he never got paid. Correct me if im wrong.
Death Row owned 3 albums that the contract stipulated. But the rest of the songs Tupac recorded were not owned by Death Row.
What❓interscope was the umbrella for pac and deathrow and he was on deathrow to put 3 albums out
Dr. Dre was a very wise businessman.
10,000 Masters? That is HARD to believe ...the logistics invloved in recording all of that material would be staggering.
Musa I of Mali no it's not, you don't know the business. Thousands are never released or even used.
@Meagainsthewrld ...I have recorded with people before and it's not a fast process. If you recorded 3 songs per day it would take 10 years to complete 10,000 songs
Musa I of Mali I've worked with and know artists who recorded 1,000 tracks for a single album. Not everyone is slow.
Musa I of Mali you know how people recorded at Can-Am? How many entire albums, soundtracks, scores, etc. were recorded. Not ever reel was a complete project.
1000 Tracks for ONE album... how long did that take... also, if they need 1K tracks for one album then maybe the music biz isn't for them. BUhahaaaa, that's a farce.
Where's all the "2pac got killed for gang shit" ppl at??
Doc Funk Right here
quan Brooklyn kid I know you heard someone who had close ties with deathrow say assassinated at the 4:11 mark? Or you just jumped straight to comments?
Lol he said he didn't know the amount Lydia got to later say she got 175 Million ...u know u fucked up right
Vlad is the most clueless interviewer on the planet
Tupac should’ve been protected at all cost. Sugar Knight should’ve protected him like the Secret Service.
Another case. Dre is overrated. Daz held it down. Quik, battlecat, an Big hutch are better on the boards. Quiks "safe an sound" an above the laws "uncle sams curse" shits on "the chronic" production wise
MrNewtowner13 LA Uncle Sam's Curse is one of the best albums in rap history.....
MrNewtowner13 LA
Quik is way underrated
Robert Reed str8 up
Yeah Dre may be a lil overrated as a beatmaker but as an overall producer, he's a legend. He gave us NWA, The D.O.C., Snoop, Eminem, 50, etc. He's like Quincy Jones as a producing overseeing the aspects vs. Quik and Battlecat who just oversee the beats/production.
Demonte Morton that's fair"
Originally he didnt know how much then later its exactly 107 million...hmm
I caught that too
First, he said " Tens of millions"....
Tupac getting shot in New York? Vlad knows everything bout Pac, even the healthiness of his shit.
Death Row was the greatest west coast rap label of all time period and had death row east had come up and been headed by Tupac hip hop today would be a totally different landscape
Suge bailed Tupac out of money from Interscope, and then takes all the credit for it. Suge in an nutshell!
Suge wasn't a street guy 👀🤔
Suge didn't get shot in the head! So sick of hearing that! It's not true !
Vlad is the worse interviewer ever...
where slim jesus at
S.I.D gone long ago just like this fucking comment.gtfoh with that shiiitt.
Calm down sir. Did I get you mad? You mad bro?
whos gonna be the first sucka to buy vladtv merchandise? lmfao
All these dudes speaking reckless about suge now that he is under the jail
Dre didnt care when those gangsters got him free of ruthless.
Assasinated...Facts...
Vlad trying to save somebody ass❗️❗️. Just say dre got into beef with suge because 2pac became the main guy and the Orlando was from easy e and dr dre neighborhood damn❗️
Old head breaking it down
Been seeing gossip lately on blogs saying suge shot pac in the head while he (pac) was trying to hop in the back seat.....also,if I get jumped....knowing you with the person I had a fight with that jumped me....why would I just aim at pac, majority door shots...and suddenly suge says he got a bullet in his head....but report says his head was grazed by glass fragments from the window.....then the cops couldn't open the door on the side pac was on....suge yells out "I got it man I'm the ONLY one that knows how to open the door.....AND IT'S A BRAND NEW CAR?
Jimmy cut the damn check for Tupac's release.
Contact me.
why is there a lifetime contract with suge and dr dre?
Lil Riipsta ikr, that was baloney, and stupid of both of them to even think about conjuring up.
Bizzy Get Lizzy suge helped dre get released from ruthless, helped with all his legal problems suge made that man who he is regardless of what he did with NWA Dre came on his own on death row with the help of suge, you’d think dre would have wild out the way he did in the 90’s if suge didn’t hold him down Hell they even have the same baby mama. So there will always be a lifetime contract.
@@tio3424 Nonsense.
Suge fed the hood! #facts
Greg Lewis People keep forgetting that.
Aaron Lester exactly nobody did what suge did, everybody else was hiring professionals n industry ppl suge employed 80%street, ppl 20% cooperate. Unlike other record companies
Greg Lewis I JUST got into an argument with somebody about that about a week ago. Suge never got credit for the good things he did. All people focus on is the bad. Crazy.
Iceberg Slim That's the WORLD we live in. Propaganda. Even Death Row employees vouch Sure Knight wasn't a bad guy, that he would wake up at 2am to save someone's home from being foreclosed by 5am or bail someone out of jail at 3am on call. That says a lot about his character. Everyone makes mistakes, especially when you're young with UNLIMITED AMOUNTS of money & fame beyond imagination.
Franklin Dunn I told somebody that too! I said, do you realize how young and rich suge was at the time? That'll make anybody feel untouchable.
THE AMOUNT WAS =========> $110MILLION THAT SUGE LOST 2========>LYDIA HARRIS🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
Vlad
How much is this guy worth?
Suge was a thug. That’s why he in jail to this day😵💫🙄
Interview Trippie Redd
Why do men smack their mouth...
I can't stop staring at this man's 2 nose hairs. I noticed it and can't look away.
after all these pac interviews this year its starting to make me laugh almost. they make him out to be like billy the kid almost like none of us were alive when he was lol. hes one of my fav rappers but this is starting to become out of control like he was the only person in the 90s with a platinum record or something when he was just a regular dude back then. each year he becomes more popular then jesus lol
Tupac was ahead of the class then as he is now. Much of what he did behind the scenes in his activism was not brought to the public enough because the media wanted to portray him in a certain light. It wasn't until after his departure, that all of the stories and videos of who he really was began to surface.
bassoonman2000 lol was he fck.he was a walking contradiction.a drunk drug taking wannabe gangster
That's your opinion but it doesn't change the work he personally did in his community and all of the people who attest to that. At least he did something for his community, more that most of the rest can say.
He looks so scared.
i highly doubt Jay-Z came out to Death Row during that time. He was busy dissing a dead tupac on stage in nyc
urbanflavorz Check out the story on how Jay was able to able(forced) to use Me and my Girlfriend by Pac.
he didn't force nothing, yall jay z stans are infatuted with jay and make up your own narrative. He PAID SUGE KNIGHT to use that song. He reached out to Suge and Suge paid him. Why would you do a deal with the person who killed your best friend.
This dude is a clown
Dr.Dre is lazy because even after he left death he really didn't put out that much music
