Diesel - Down In The Silvermine - Ren Je Rot 1980

- February 25 1980: Dutch rock band Diesel performs "Down In The Silvermine" on Holland's popular kiddy show "Ren Je Rot", presented by Martin Brozius. Written by Mark Boon and Rob Vunderink, "Down In The Silvermine", was the second single to be pulled from Diesel's 1980 debut album "Watts In A Tank" and, like Diesel's first single "Goin' Back To China", peaked at number 28 in the Dutch Top 40. Diesel's fourth single, "Sausalito Summernight", also penned by Boon and Vunderink, just barely made it into the Dutch charts, but fared better across the Atlantic, peaking at number 25 in the Billboard Hot 100 and reaching the number one spot in Canada, prompting a North American Tour in the fall of 1981.
Over the years, Diesel underwent countless changes of personnel, but the band in this clip - smiling their way through a stunning example of Dutch choreography - was the real deal and consisted of Mark Boon (lead vocal, lead guitar), Rob Vunderink (lead vocal, lead guitar), Pim Koopman (drums, background vocal, producer) and Frank Papendrecht (bass guitar, background vocal). Sadly and ironically, three of the guys featured in this video have since descended into the silvermine for good. Martin Brozius, Frank Papendrecht and Pim Koopman all passed away in 2009, Frank and Pim within one week of each other.

Diesel was een hele leuke Nederlandse band uit eind jaren zeventig begin tachtig vooral dit nummer en Sausolito Summernight behoren tot mijn favorieten
VERY STRONG NUMBER OF DIESEL ( MARK BOON ) ! GOOD VOCAL HARMONY....GOOD SONG ! THOUGH COMPOSED ALREADY IN 1980 IT IS STILL SUITABLE IN 2021 ! CAN'T IMAGINE THAT THE SONG DID NOT MAKE IT IN THE TOP 10 OR EVEN NUMBER ONE.....

Goede Nederrockband. Had ook een grote hit in US met Sausolito Summernight. Die komt daar nog regelmatig voorbij op de radio. Evenals natuurlijk onze Golden Earring en Shocking Blue. Mogen we heel trots op zijn. Diesel drummer Pim Koopman heeft ook zn sporen verdiend als producer. Pim R.I.P.

WOW! those dancers are really sumthin'. I'm sure the kids found it fun. I can't help but laugh though.
I was those kids' age at the time and saw this on TV and had a little prepubescent stiffy.

YES! I have very fond memories of watching the show and the dancers were a big part of it. To a very young lad, they were the epitome to sexy womanhood.

I think that is an issue with the video tape synchro. The guitar players also look a little off. But it takes nothing away from the song. I think the band wasn't playing live anyway; it's called playback.

As a note, Rob Vunderink can still be seen in the dutch band Kayak as guitar and vocals in some songs

they didn't need those fish in silver jumpsuits to ruin this performance.
To millions of Dutch kids those dancers were sex symbols. Maybe it did not age well or translates well across border, but I like to think that in some way they brought happiness to many.

I don't think that's the same guy. According to wikipedia, the ice skater Rob Vunderink was born 28 August 1961. However, this Rob Vunderink was born in 1950. Also, this one has been seen on facebook saying how much he hates even watching sports much less doing sports himself: "EK, Tour, Spelen - wat hebben mensen die wel van sport houden toch een mazzel."

I think the dancers had the same choreographer, or lack thereof, as Mick Jagger and David Bowie's Dancing in the Streets or Men Without Hats Safety Dance. Gates MacFadden, aka Dr Beverley Crusher on STTNG used to choreograph Muppets…maybe the good doctor might not have been able to save these dancers but they could have been clad in ugly cardigan sweaters.

Als ik me goed herinner was het altijd op woensdag.
@remco16041971: Ren Je Rot was geen live tv-programma en de opnamen vonden eerder plaats. Maar erg opmerkzaam van je, dat moet gezegd.
Als ik me goed herinner werd Ren Je Rot op woensdagmiddag uitgezonden. Leuk programma. Jammer dat het op het eind werd misbruikt voor EEG/EU propaganda. Martin Brozius was toen kennelijk al erg eurofiel. Heel jammer.

Well, it WAS the 70's / 80's, and in Europe they were cranking out shows like this by the dozen. Quality took a beating.
