Shower doors come in many shapes and styles and are made by many manufacturers. Many shower doors come in kits and are easy to work with, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
You will have to purchase a shower door kit that is the right size for your tub or shower. Measure the distance from wall to wall at both top and bottom that will contain the door. Select a door with a maximum opening equal to or greater than the largest of your measurements. Measure the vertical distance from the top of the tub ledger to the top of the tub surround. Select a door with a height equal to or less than the shortest of these measurements.
Before you start:
Make sure your tub is level and the walls are plumb. If they are off level by more than a quarter of an inch you might need ledge filler or wall filler to get the proper level. Call a pro if you're uncomfortable with making this fix.
Here are the steps from our install:
Step 1
Measure the wall to wall distance in the center of the tub ledge because that’s where you’re going to lay your track. Subtract 3/16th of an inch to leave room so that the wall channels slide in easily.
Step 2
Place your track in the center of the tub ledge. The “high side” of the track goes towards the outside of the tub. You want the high side out because it so water from the shower doesn’t spill out onto the floor. Make sure you leave an equal amount of room at each end of the track for the wall channels. The track must sit flat along the ledge or shower base.
Step 3
Take the wall channels and slide them down over the track to get the exact fit. Be careful you don’t move the track on the tub ledge from its position. The wall channels should be fully engaged to the bottom track, and must sit flat against the walls. Use your level to make sure the wall channels are plumb with the wall. Mark the mounting holes of the wall channel, then you will do the exact same thing for the other side of the track. Next drill and insert the wall anchors.
Step 4
Before you install the track, make sure you start with a clean surface so that your silicone sealant will adhere properly. Apply a bead of the sealant to the grout line where the end of the track will be located. On the underside of the track you’ll apply a thick continuous bead to the outside leg only. Position the track on the tub in the area you marked earlier. The high side of the track must be placed toward the outside of the tub. Next, install the wall channels, fit them into place and then screw them in securely. You’ll need to install the bumpers at the top and bottom screw locations.
Step 5
Before you install the header you will have to measure distance at the top of the wall channels. Then subtract 1/16th of an inch from the measurement so that the header will fit snugly onto the wall channels. Measure the header carefully before you cut. Next slide your header down on top of the wall channels.
Step 6
Install the rollers on the glass door panels. We installed the roller in the second to the top-mounting hole. The other holes were in case we needed to make any adjustments to fit the panels properly. For the outer sliding panel, the rollers were mounted on the same side as the bottom guide channel.
Step 7
Next we installed the inner-sliding panel first. With the rollers facing toward the tub, hold the panel by the sides and lift it up into the underside of the header. Make sure that both rollers are resting on the inner roller track. Slide the inner sliding panel towards the shower head end of the tub. Now check to be certain the sliding panel is plumb with the wall. The edge of the sliding panel should touch both bumpers. You will want to make sure that both the sliding panels are hung as low as possible to make sure water doesn’t splash out.
Many shower door models come with a small short track in the center of the bottom track. Ours uses two clips instead. Fit the clip in a slot under the bottom track and then slide the door panel in place and tighten the clip to the door panel with a screwdriver.
To install the outer sliding panel, face the rollers toward the outside, hold the outside panel by the sides and lift up into the underside of the header. Make sure that both rollers are resting on the outer roller track and slowly release the panel. The bottom guide channel slides over the high side of the track.
Step 8
Apply the silicone sealant to both ends of the track where it meets the wall channel and the inside and outside seams of the wall channels. Once the sealant has set for about an hour you can test it out. - Jak na to + styl
I mainly want to do this because I HAAAATE when the curtain touches me when I shower lol
Me too...I hate it!
Me too lol
I almost jump out my skin when that happens 🤮🤢
OMG! Me too! Makes me feel sick actually.
Y'all are definitely my people! 🤭
This was great, I love the fact that a woman did it all and gave me confidence to do it myself after asking my handyman for the past 3 months!!
So did u not think a woman can do this.
21st century sir.
Did you have any unexpected issues?
@@mikezieg80 To be fair, most of them can't.
@@MAGAMANto be really fair, it’s that most of them won’t, not that most of them can’t.
Time to change handy man
They got rid of this show and all others like it because it showed people how to do what the "PRO'S" do and save money. And the PRO'S didn't like that. This is a great video and really informative.
Excellent!
A couple of notations. 1. You can use the shop vac to suck the ceramic or porcelain debris as you are drilling- that stuff is nasty on the skin. 2. You really should wait 24 hrs for the caulking to fully dry before running the shower. 3. Wiping the surface of the tub or shower where the track goes with alcohol will help assure a better adhesion of the caulk. 4. Sometimes it's best to seal just the inside of the tracks toward the tub or shower, caulking/sealing the outside may cause water to accumulate inside the track and become stagnant, moldy and could rot a wall that isn't water proof. This way, a leak would be evident before it becomes a major problem.
Thank you. This is the reason why I read through the comments. Always some extra helpful tips and advice. I will keep these in mind when I install my shower doors soon.
I watched a lot of shower door installation videos and this was by far the most clear, concise, and professional. Great top-rail cross-section scene.
Yes, I agree. This was very concise and straight to the point. The verbal instruction is very clear and easy to understand.
If you're going to drill into tile then make sure your using a 1) Hammer drill.
2) Get good anchors and screws that already come with a bit so you have the correct size bit. 3) Grab a "CARBIDE" bit the same size as the one that came with the anchors, this for drilling into tiles.Tape a refrence mark the same depth as your anchor from the tip and twice the size of the bit creating a stopper so that when you drill past the tile it doesn't shoot through the other wall when applying pressure and prevents the drill from slamming into the tile and damaging it. As a preference I add silicone to the outside of the anchors then insert it so it sets better and seals it. If you want you can silicone the hole in the wall too. This is mostly for your typical DYI person. I know it sounds like a lot of steps just to drill holes but it helps you find the correct size bit, prevents leaks and damages. Hopefully this helps.
Why did this transport me to the 90s?? Lmao.
But seriously, this is the most helpful and concise DIY video I have ever watched. Thank you!
I'm so going to do this... sick of shower curtains. Thanks for the DIY video showing a woman installing it... now I'm inspired=)
The best and clearest instructions I have ever seen on CZcams, thank you. I am getting ready to do this job!
I'm a single female and I do alot of DIY projects, so I appreciate Teresa being the instructor. Thanks so much!!
I love how quick she goes, it's like she's racing to see who can install their shower door the fastest🤣 but fr love how complete this is without any unnecessary details or shots
Watch when she starts to saw the track and camera angle changes it's not her arms sawing through the rail it's 😂.
@@dozerdlx4183 That is definitely still her arm.
@@MAGAMANMy bad, just thought when the camera angle changed her arm looked to large must be the camera angle. I put up my aunt's shower doors and her video was perfect for the job. She seems nice, professional and extremely knowledgeable. Its the best video I found on CZcams to do the job and I have been working construction for 15years.
Really nice to see women getting in the building and trades . Great job
You showed and explain everything in very easy way , now I feel that I can do that too! You help us to grow our confidence level higher. Thank you so much 😊
Great job, very fast, straight to the point! less talking about things that don’t matter…
WOW! AMAZING how simple you made this. I have 2000-2005 gold trim glass doors that need to be replaced. SO glad to have watched this.I also need to replace faucet, etc to match ..😢
Well, you made this seem so simple, that I now have a project to work on this weekend!
You made this look so easy compared to other videos I’ve watched! Simple and straight to the point. I’m going to install a door over my tub. The shower curtains are starting to get on my nerves lol. Thanks for sharing! ❤️
It all depends on the shower door. I doubt you can even find this old model anymore.
@MAGAMAN This comment was 8 months ago but actually I did find one like it. Installed. Everything is perfect. ❤️
Very helpful 🎉
It's nice to see someone do it first instead of just black and white instructions
She can fix my house anyday and we can PARTY 😂 “diddy” voice
So the only thing holding the header in place is the weight of the sliding doors pulling the header down onto the side posts?
I only had to flip a door that was hung wrong side out but this video also helped in setting the rollers properly. I really should have put down some cardboard in my tub and on the floor which would have prevented more scratches on both. But I got it done! Thank you.
Excellent video. Thanks for the idea. I want a shower but removing my tub would be a nightmare. Plus I like the option of havongvthe tub. Brilliant 💡 Thank you so much!
Thanks for helping us put our shower doors back on!
Excellent video! My shower kit did not come with instructions so this was valuable. There were studs behind the shower so I didn't need the wall anchors. Also, a hack saw with a miter box would've been way better. But since I didn't have one, I used my grinder and kind of messed up the upper track, but it is not too noticeable.
Thanks! Ended up doing the project myself and it worked. It’s intricate and takes time. The right tools are imperative especially the drill bits. 👍🏼
Just finished my installation thanks to you . Great video !!
How’d it go?! Strongly considering
This is by far the best diy video ever, other videos i have watched, I still don’t know how to install after watching it. This video, I’m going to Home Depot tomorrow!!!
How did it go?
@@gillart99 my shower door didn’t arrive until 2 months ago. And I barely finish yesterday lol 😝 it was not as easy as it seem. It took me 2 days to complete the project.
Good job. I used this video as a guide to install higher quality doors for a shower pan. I needed to drill a pilot hole for drilled into thick tile and cement board. The only problem with these glass doors is maintenance. A daily cleaning with a squeegee to prevent water spots and soup scum.
Stoked this was at the top of my list when I searched. I searched before a few months ago and couldn't find the same doors I have. The set in this video is the exact set I have. Lol... I swapped rental houses owned by the same guy and took the shower doors with me when I left but my cousins boyfriend took them out for me and now I have to figure out how to install them. Cool it's also a female doing the tutorial cause here I was like ***If a guy can do it so can I!!***
The tape!! I was wondering how I would get those to stand up and stay by myself. ;D
This was a great video. I now have the false confidence Todo this on our renovation.
You are the best, you are the only one who explained the detailed steps clearly, bravo 👏
Love love love this woman !!!💪🏻❤❤
Made it so easy! Thanks 🙏
You make it seem so easy! Thanks for the inspiration! :)
Great tutorial
I have mobility issues and use a shower chair. It's a pain when the curtain grabs onto me. Looking forward to replacing the curtain with a door. Thanks for sharing.
The best I've seen, Easy installation and loved the video
Great job! You did it so easily!
Best video I've seen for shower door bathtub install - much appreciated!
Yes you are amazing. I would watch your video even if I didn't have a shower door to install
Thank you for the video.
Nice instructions!!
This was great. Thank you so much.
Excellent instructional vid. TY
2021 March 8.. Beautiful and Handy Person.. Love your instructions. Thank you . You got a new subscriber..
Very good my dear
Very nice work
Good video & showed how to seal the frames properly 😊
Excellent video. Can't wait to do this.
Only because a number of people commented about how old this might be. According to IMDb, Teresa was on this series from 1995-2005.
Still useful info - especially if you look through the comments! One I didn't see was her using a hammer to drive the anchors into the tile. Ouch! Maybe a rubber mallet or a block of wood against the anchors?!
Wow, great and very clear video!!! GREAT JOB PROFESSIONAL 👏🏾
Thanks for the good info. That’s my next project. Subscribed.
I would recommend waiting to run the shower until your silicon has time to properly set up.
How long does that take?
@@tom11zz884 Recommend minimum is generally 24 - 48 hours. It may differ on the product you are using. They will often state in the fine print what they recommend. 👍
Shouldn't silicone be added to the side rails as well?
@Bastard of the Party Yes, vertically on the interior and exterior side both where the side jambs meet the tile.
@@jackolantern404 I thought so, she failed to do that in the video. Thanks.
Love it!
She’s good she’s is Excellent teacher
Great video, with very simple instructions. 👍
I love that this feels like the 90s but was made two years ago lol
Great video, Thank you
Thanks! Would you recommend any llw cost cutting tools for this header/top track? Kohler customer service suggested hack saw or "miter" saw. Also, the outer plastic in my default roller wheels wore out, exposing the metal underneath, and damaged the header track after only 8 years of use. I switched it out with nylon plastic roller wheeler, I hope these wheels will last longer.
Excellent video! I was wondering how to install doors like this and the video did a great job of explaining the process.
dam good vid way to go you got me on track now thanks
She is awesome! So calm cool collected and precise explains everything so well !!! I appreciate the detail of explanation step-by-step! Thank you so much for this!
I have a question. Mine is an old one piece molded bathtub unit. Is there a problem drilling through those or any extra precautions that need to be taken. Thank you.
Great video easy to follow
You make it look so easy..👍
Thank you much I’m going to try that on mine
I swear this is a 90s video
Don't forget to Sand down the small metal bers after each cut.... for a nice professional Look....! you can use a dremel sandpaper drum bit...!
Great job your better than me, I'm just starting to learn to do home stuff myself , just bought a condo and I would like to learn to stuff myself if I can thanks
Nice video and well presented.
Women are freaking incredible 🤩 great video
Great job
Perfect.
YOURE FUOKIN AWESOME!!!!!!🔥🤘🏾😎🤘🏾🔥
Wow, beautiful
I see the outer door rides on a raised lip on the bottom. What keeps the bottom of the inner door in place so it doesn't swing into the shower?
Nicely explained i am planning to instal one myself
Awesome thank you so much
Nicely done video!
Good job thanks
Thank you so much I didn’t get instructions with mine !!
OMG the part 7:04 where you showed that wheels are actually hanging fixed my problem..i thought theyre just inside 2 rails all this time..
Lovely
This was very helpful video thank you so much
Where can you get those shims? I can only find regular shims as the local box stores
Great Job, you boost up my confident and saved my $ 4500 , which they told me it’s going to cost. The only question is how the top of the frame will be held in the position since i don’t see it screwed.
The top rail does not need to be screwed since the weight of the doors will keep them in place.
The one I installed had a clip that attached into the rail of the top horizontal piece and then attached that into the top hole of the vertical rail with the screw.
Mine had a t-shape to slide into the top rail. But that meant the top and side rails had to be set in altogether.
@@IM-ng1ep I disagree. The doors can't possibly weigh that much because she lifted them into place. The top should always be secured for safety. She could have used screws or caulking.
The wall panel also must be sealed as well as screwed to keep things water tight
Thank you 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽👏👏
I came across this video because I was searching for bottom guide replacement part for my maax shower door inner door panel. Do you know what it looks like? I was hoping you would show in inner door panel installation as well
Which one is this shower door model? When can I find it? It is exactly the replacement I need.
Great instructions other than not demonstrating how to find center on the tub ledge for the track, it appeared just eyeballing was acceptable?
She is a legend - imagine
Excellent video & explanation, blessings & Happy Holidays to you & yours. 🙏. Joey
can i install a bypass shower door on a fiberglass/acrylic/prefab shower with bathub? The stall walls portrudes on the side about an 1" I think so I don't know how would I install the side wall rails on this type of shower.
Im glad to see that somebody else uses way too much caulk and makes a mess like me
What would be the best sealant to use for the bottom rail?
nice diy guide! please let us know the breakdown of material costs. thanks alot
Nothing like a handy woman nice on the eyes😍😍
Would it be same steps on a non tile shower?
Sweet
When you take shower, which door should be closest the shower head?
so, where did you purchase this hardwarde - the top rail, two side rails and the threshold!?
