In this video I take woodworking scraps and try to make a project out of it to sell. This is focused on something you can use with your sawdust if you don't know what to do with it. Hopefully this will give you some ideas of projects you can make for woodworking to sell. You might be able to make a whole woodworking business off of just reselling these sawdust creations since they are so easy to make and could bring in some extra money if you are try to find a way to make use of your woodworking scraps. These 3D printed mold make the process a lot easier but you could make a mold out of anything. I would add this to the list of woodworking projects that sell and its an easy woodworking project for beginners as well. Hopefully this wood scrap project gave you some woodworking ideas to try out!

I noticed you used titebond original. That's not waterproof. If you subject it to water like in a planter, it will eventually degrade. Titebond III is for projects that come in contact with water but is still not 100% waterproof. Epoxy is 100% waterproof and might saturate the saw dust easier. And you wouldn't have to use that sleeve. And you could go to a local woodworking factory and probably get tons of sawdust for free. I think you have something with this idea.
Thanks for the advice but don't you think epoxy is a too expensive material for this kind of job? If we could make epoxy easily ourselves that'd be great but I cannot see any reason to use that for recycling sawdust.

New project finally done! Hope you all enjoy and take some inspiration and try it yourself. Also make sure to check out the Etsy store and pick up one of the five sets of these planters if you want. Thanks for all the support and being patient as I set up everything to be sold. I don't like releasing anything that I feel is unfinished or not the best thing that I can produce so that often causes long lead times but I want to make sure its all quality.

I think that the first marbled design was actually my favorite! All of them were still super cool, and a great use for old sawdust!
Also, the editing on this video is super good. The integration of 3d models for visualization was really well done.
I think it would have been mine too if I could control exactly where the marbled lines ended up and seen how it looks inside the mold but I have not completely given up on that version yet.

The sleeve is a good idea. If left in contact with damp soil, the wood will swell... Just like a sheet of OSB left in the rain for an extended period.

Over a year ago I thought of the same idea but haven't had a chance to make it because of my printer having several issues. I plan to do it with more fine sand dust and more glue so it has a smoother look I also wanted to dye or stain it interesting colors but it's cool to see someone make something I thought randomly a while back

We were just now working with sawdust, glue and food coloring because we needed detail but abhor epoxy resin. Don't get me wrong, we have a fiberglass boat and I think it might make a good waterproof coating for the inside of sawdust containers. Best edited video ever and my wood scrap pile is taking on a life of it's own.
Very interesting, how did the food coloring turn out? That briefly crossed my mind but never tried it.
@@Ideal_Idea It seems good. Our first thought was wood stain but we were not sure how well that would work with white glue. We sanded a little early as I was over eager but it sanded off easy by hand and easer with the drum sander. We sifted the sawdust so it was pretty fine and made a paste. We are testing an idea for wooden coasters with a design routed in with the cnc and we wanted it to look more rustic than something like epoxy. But the color is good and it seems the food color penetrated the wood dust for a nice consistent but rustic finish. A few more tweaks but looks like we are moving in the right direction.
I think one more aspect to take into consideration is what to use instead of Titebond? From what I know, it's not biodegradable, and mixing it in the sawdust just makes the whole thing not recyclable anymore. Maybe some bio-oil resin would be more suited for this type of project?
I suspect mixing the glue fire tly on sawdust leaves some areas concentrated. Other areas dry. If you evenly mix / dissolve the glue in water, then gradually add to sawdust & mix thoroughly you will get better gluing,easier drying and more even mix

As for a sealer, I've been experimenting with clear spray Flex Seal on a planter that I made. It's held up outside for about six months now, with sign of wear or yellowing, as of yet. It could be an alternative to using a plastic sleeve. Definitely quicker.

The look and texture kind of reminds me of a granite crossed with sandstone... "woodstone products" you could actually do a proper pressure mold with these, but I would probably pick a binder other than TB original either way, it breaks down in water, just in case.

5:00 your idea on the marble effect, reminds me of coloured sand ornaments in uk beach shops at the coast. Probably 30 years ago, but maybe they still exist.

I think you leaving out the wax is what gives them the pitted texture, the wax probly fills in those pit under the heat and pressure mdf goes through
It might be, these were also the worst ones I made. For the ones that I made to sell I used a lot more pressure when packing and a lot of the pitting went away but adding wax might be what its missing to really give it a MDF feel.
theres one thing about it thats good, u should be able to drop them and they dont shatter!!! thanks for the demo, i think its good to go, if someone could get it to look less like musli it probably would be a good thing. but probably it looks to go for me to try.

What about throwing it in a blender to make it fine then use epoxy since its a planter and would handle water well. its like your creating mud but using your woodworking byproduct.
If you could make the molds out of acrylic (cast them in acrylic resin? 🤷♂) you could see the layers as you add them and it would make it work kind of like sand art.
Not a bad idea, might be able to use clear PLA to print it as well and give some indication of the pattern youre making, any help to see the inside would be good instead of doing it blind haha
You might as well make them out of particle board that you can then wet and rub for the same look. You can even give them the marble effect by dragging a feather dipped in your contrasting color and randomly pulled across the surface.
Can you make an Alessi themed lamp? Think it would be really interesting, and you certainly have the skill 👍

Actually very creative. I wonder how it would look if you did a coat of clear epoxy on it? They could definitely sell also, I think.
That could work, the main thing I would just consider would be to get a UV resistant epoxy if they are sitting out in the sun.
I want to think the wax is going to add some moisture resistance and additional adhesion. I am inspired to create something as my line of products is being based on upcycled wood, pallets and ruff cut saw mill discards.
I believe you're correct on the wax, if I do more tests I will be adding that to compare but if you end up doing it before me let me know how your projects workout!
If you want to keep even more scrap wood, start witting as a hobby since I do that I even keep the smalles dumb pieces haha. Great project anyway.

Just a thought I had, what if you blended the sawdust to make it finer. I feel like it would be much more dense when packed. Not sure if that would make it stronger or not but just an observation I thought about. Lmk if you agree with that or not.
It would help, that is what i ended up doing it but it was really quick in this video. For the duplicates I made I blended it longer and it was definitely easier to get lass gaps

what ended up being the recipe for the final mix that you found worked out?
Do you know anything about thick(somewhat stiff) PVC laminate flooring? Or any flooring really, but the PVC kind i have the most of...
I got a rolling cosmetics cart out of our local recycling bins, including door locks (without keys unfortunately, but thankfully unlocked already) and according to what I've seen on eBay, it would normally come with 2-3 inch tall drawer bins, but unfortunately mine being a recycle bin find, didn't come with them. All that said, I've been looking for a way to easily make shelving to use instead of the standard drawer bins that would normally have been used, and going through all the different ideas I came across some leftover pieces of both wood laminate and PVC laminate flooring both of which have a rubber underlayment on the bottom, which I can then flip the shelving over if I need a shelving board that has a more non-slip grip on, and I've been wondering, for both the wood laminate flooring and the PVC laminate flooring, what kind of glue that I have her on the house, would work, to permanently join the two tongue and groove pieces together into one easily removable board that won't separate on the way out of or into the cart... Because I am using the lengthways tongue and groove portions and it not the end tongue and groove portions, it's obviously not a structural tongue and groove joint, just a joint that holds my rear and front boards together, and should be plenty strong enough for the small amount of weights that I will be using the rolling cart for, specifically for the most part, for lightweight crafting and computer maintenance stuff, such as screwdrivers, exacto knives, Velcro, cheap plastic paper cutters (not guillotine style but press and cut style) as well as other things such as shrink wrap tubing perhaps, and Milwaukee paint pens or whatever else I might want to add... I might even add some kind of an LED lighting system, so it isn't quite so dark in the unit, maybe...
But again, I'm just looking at ways to glue vinyl/pvc flooring tongue and groove flooring together, as well as doing the same thing with the limited wood laminate flooring scraps I have... I have a tiny scrap piece cut in half, with a bit of titebond 2 wood glue on, to test whether it will work on the tongue and groove parts of vinyl flooring, but again, it's WOOD glue, not vinyl glue, if there is such a thing, so I'm not holding out much hope

I tried something similar to this once. What i will say is if you want a smoother look or more homogeneous use a strainer and the larger pieces you can break up in my wife’s blender. 🤫

It still looks like a granola bar, what's your particle size? Don't you generate fine dust (that's dangerous to breathe)? It might be interesting to see this build process tried against actual granola or rolled oats.

Oh gosh, you must be exactly across the globe or something that is more then I found in any of my testing for shipping. Honestly, watching my video is plenty of support already, I am thankful for that enough. Don't worry though! I am hoping this is just the start and there will be other releases of stuff I design and make in the future!

I know that there are better alternatives but I have limited resources right now and I'm on a tight budget.
How did you grind up the wood shavings to make them smaller?
I just put them in a blender for a very short amount of time, but to be honest I was unsure if it was actually safe or not so I didn't show it.
