Hof Van Cleve by Chef Peter Goossens is the Best Restaurant in Belgium

- Chef Peter Goossens is the grandfather of Belgian fine dining. Hof van Cleve got its first Michelin star in the 80s, the second star in the 90s, and the third star in 2005 - and it's still the best restaurant in Belgium today (ranked no. 36 in The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2021). The restaurant is located inside an old farmhouse about a 30 minute drive outside of Ghent. We were especially wowed by the desserts, and particularly the dessert trolley, where guests are welcomed (even encouraged!) to try every cake, tart, and cookie on display.

A top restaurant indeed. Although it has been nearly 25 years ago, I still remember the menu. Excellent.
Wow, that's awesome!
19,5 points on 20 for gault millau, 5 chef hats 🎩, 17 years straight owning the 3 Michelin ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️
Try to beat that!. Truly The Godfather of Belgian cuisine.. no one here in Belgium wil ever come close.. this guy has done it all!!
Best thing of all this, compared to almost all chefs, he is always there in his kitchen and running it 🙌🏽
We were so pleasantly surprised! A place this old could easily be outdated, but Peter Goossens has stayed up to date! And like you're saying, he's there in the kitchen every day. Makes all the difference.
@@andersandkaitlin I’m glad you guys enjoyed it ! Food is life and you and Kaitlin know that better then anyone else.. So happy that you visited our tiny little country! Small but a lot to offer as you witnessed! Love you guys ❤️
@@MadMaxBeyond We loved Belgium! Will be back for more soon, for sure!
@@andersandkaitlin thank you and enjoy the holidays in the U.S. !! 🎉🥳
Well said ...that's why you don't see him a lot on tv shows or public media... he's fkng busy in his kitchen...
To this date still my favourite dining experience, absolute class.
Just superb!
His NJAM episodes are awesome. Luckely he is still verry down to earth. What an absoluut legend
Is that a Belgian show?
@@andersandkaitlin it's on youtube but he speaks dutch in it. Njam peter goossens if you want too look it up
@@NLJeffEU Thanks!
Stunning review!
I live 2 kilometers away from it.
Peter Goossens is truly one of the greatest, a lot of Souschefs/people who worked their have their own michelinstar restaurants.
One of my favorites is Vrijmoed by Michael Vrijmoed in Ghent, 2 star Michelin and absolutely incredible. 2nd best vegetable restaurant in the WORLD.
Michael worked 8 years alongside Peter.
Class!
Thanks fot the tip. We'v heard about it. Next time!
En Michael is een sympathieke kerel. In tegenstelling tot Goossens die enkel vriendelijk is als hij u kent. Prijs/kwaliteit is 10 keer beter in Vrijmoed.
@@peterjanssens666 100% akkoord!
My goodness, I don't even want to think about the amount of work that goes into creating a single dish, let alone the whole menu... and a desert cart with dozens of different pastries?? Amazing
Insane, right? :D
They have 30 cooks at last count. Not to mention professional equipment like Thermomix and Pacojets. It's not as hard as it seems with an army and a restaurant kitchen.
Looks delicious! And I love how the chef says "vege-tables"!
Haha, love that too!
So nice you guys featured Alberte! such a great neighbourhood restaurant, frequently changing menu ! great wine list, and by the glass too, incredibly knowledgeable staff a real treat for people like myself who work in the industry who don't have the weekend off as they're open on Mondays !!
We loved it there!
Beautiful video as always!
And that Dessert Trolley!
Thank you 😋
As far as 3* restaurants are concerned, I’ve wanted to go there for many years. Chef Goossens strikes me as such a charming gentleman.
He is, and his food feels modern and not outdated at all, despite the age of the chef and his restaurant.
A restaurant to put on the bucket list for sure! Lovely filming.
You should!
Okay this was one heck of a meal. So much flavour, in so many packages.
Absolutely!
I would love to try that dessert trolley! All the foods look perfectly delicious! Yum 😋
It's sooo good!
What a wonderful video. makes me hungry. We'll have to try next time we are in Belgium
You should!
I fell in love with this menu
It's amazing!
Booking now - that dessert trolley looks unbelievable!
It truly is!
Superb. On my to do list for 2022!
Go for it!
I have been there 1.5 year ago, before covid. The food was outstanding especially the caviar. The chef was very nice. I may visit them again one day.
You should! Top level still.
Everything looks amazing👏🏻
It was!
Very nice video ,Thanks ,a very creative menu ,nice combination of vegetables with complimentary seafood and meat ( I liked the chicken liver mouse with hazelnuts ?) also giving the cost was a nice touch
You guy's channel is sooo good
Wow, thanks!

Love him!
That breadtrolley. Oh my god.....
Then the dessert trolley! And cheese too if you can muster.
nice to see your video
Thanks for watching!
Real food, no flowers
Haha, flowers can be both tasty and pretty, but this guy doesn't need it.

@@nicogroot5170 thanks for the tip!
Very good video, excellent interview, and I think I gained weight just looking at your video of the dessert trolley.
Haha. Great to hear!
This one has been on my wishlist for so long! How did it compare to some of the other 3* you’ve been to?
One of the best! Super impressed.
As a Belgian, this is like describing the White House as "just a short flight away from New York". Idk why Ghent is in this video. We're a tiny country, EVERYTHING is a 30 minute drive from Ghent haha.
Haha, well we took a taxi so it wasn’t QUITE as bad as a flight. 😅

Ghent- Leuven: 1h
Ghent - Eupen: 2h

Belgium power 😍
Yasss!
blijft geweldig als ik belgen als onderwerp in videos zie
We hopen er meer te doen!
The chef definitely likes round shapes haha. I'm Unfreezing self-made apple pie in the kitchen atm but want to eat madeleines as well after seeing this video.
Few things beat homemade apple pie!
We live in rural Mississippi and are super poor. This kinda stuff blows us away 😂
Happy you enjoy watching it, at least. Luckily, food doesn't have to be expensive to be tasty! :)
No smoke..no flowers...its my style...yeah! I like that style....just wait
We loved the food here too!
so the highlight was the dessert
One of many, but yes!
I live in gent, for the last 20yrs I honestly thought the name of this resaurant was 'hof van 't leven' (garden of life). kinda feel like an idiot now hahaha
Haha!
At 2:04 the waiter places the dish with a fork in front of you, but you reach for the spoon. That's funny!
He actually placed a fork on top of a spoon. Both were ok to use- ;)

Does it usually take long reservations to enter a 3 Michelin starred restaurant?
My friend made a reservation 3 months beforehand
It's generally smart to start thinking about a reservation 2-3 months in advance. Some places longer, but those would be the most sought-after reservations in the world.
The first available month is July 2022. Or You can register on a waiting list in case someone cancels, but that's not a guarantee...
@@esdeekay4344 Crazy, when we booked here it was only a month or so in advance.
How much can she eat? Thats really amazing :)
Trust me, a lot! :D
that dessert cart is almost pornographic, exquisite
YES!
Vege tables
Love the accent.
Every chef says they like Japanese food and their cuisine has some kind of Japanese influence….
It's definitely a big trend right now!
Mhhhhhm I don't know about this place, hachimagaroo, Caitlin with the knife jaja
Was our best meal in 2021!
@@andersandkaitlin if you say so I believe so, I will check it again. And see how your palate is. I can concert flavors, in my mouth,,,,, when I say mhhhm, it's not is That is bad, it is that, my food cosmos, doesn't resonate with certain combinations, like chamomile with langostine, brain.... I should read more your articles.
@@lucycarlos4923 Admittedly, we were a bit skeptical about this 37-year-old restaurant as well, but Peter Goossen's cooking really surprised us. He's a master of balancing flavors.
@@andersandkaitlin wow, I am just a simple person that feels so happy to see the best cooking videos ever!!! Thank you so much.
@@lucycarlos4923 thanks for watching!
Better audio would make this so much better.
Which part of the audio are you unhappy with?
First of all, fantastic video. I would kindly like to point out a small mistake, which in itself doesn't take anything away from the quality of your video. The restaurant is located in Kruishoutem, and not Kruisem as shown in the intro. Probably an overlooked typo, keep up the good work.
Kruisem is the new name after the fusion of Kruishoutem, Zingem, Ouwegem and Huise... so no mistake.
Thanks for the local knowledge! I just went with what Google told me. Glad it turned out correctly. :)
2:03 we will never know how the chicken liver tasted(
It was amazing! One of our favorite dishes. We don't really review restaurants in our videos, but check out blog for reviews. andershusa.com
I have never felt so poor in my life…
I once wanted to have a Michelin starred food, the closest I’ve been was at Odette, (now I only eating Michelin chicken rice that is $3) and that was my second time speaking Michelin starred food.
Then I see you eating Michelin starred food left and right.
Nothing wrong with a good chicken rice, tough. I'm craving Singapore hawker food every day.
The pastry looks nice. Maybe its unpopular opinion in this comment thread, but for me, there is nothing less apetizing than seeing more plate than food on the plate.
That's because it's a tasting menu with many courses. You can't fill the plate.
i am looking this video and mz RICE is much much better. What an artist!!!
Not sure what you mean exactly. What is mz RICE?
@@andersandkaitlin my Rice man:) simple Rice
Dat taartje op 0:40, dan weet je direct dat je met honger weggaat.
Do you mean leaving hungry before you go to the restaurant?
I bet you could get a job as a Michelin judge.
Haha, no, we are way too public. :)
2:01 en daarna nog honger lijden, voor dat beetje dat je krijgt, en de kost zeker de hoogte in, ze moesten verlegen zijn
dat ge daar zoveel geld aan geeft, belachelijk stom

The Emporers new clothes.

ridiculous!
Ridiculously tasty, indeed!
5:43....dude grabbed the pastry like a savage. Definitely not going there.
Lol, enjoy the 1800s.
Fun to watch people without real jobs go around and stuff their faces
Glad it brings some fun to your 9 to 5 office life!
Fun fact: when you eat there & don't order enough (payment- wise), he kindly asks you not to come back... yea.. great restaurant.. cough..
I see the waiters make multiple mistakes serving the food though, not something you would expect from such a restaurant.
Luckily we don’t live in the 1800s, so stuff like that is really unimportant.
Mate juice with cauliflower couscous... 🤢
It was delicious. Chefs did magic!
@@andersandkaitlin 😉👍
I had diner once there, and I am sorry to say, for me it was a complete disappointment ... I had more bread that evening than in a normal week, instead of a decent meal ... lots of VERY tiny dishes, altough being very tastfully, but for me not satisfying at all
Sorry to hear that! Our experience couldn't have been more opposite of yours - we barely touched the bread.
Great chef but bad personality. Only friendly towards VIP's.
really all samey type stuff over use of gelatin, and agar, hes been doing the same shit for like 20 years as of i can remember .
In the meantime a lot of people starve to death....
What are you currently doing about that? Trolling CZcams?
And when you leave, you leave with a empty stomach and a empty wallet 😖😖😖😖👎👎👎👎👎
You leave with a stomach so full you can barely walk. Sure, this meal is expensive, but you're getting an insane value for money. It should cost the double.
@@andersandkaitlin how much did you pay for it?
@@abroZ13 We always put the price in the description! :)
@Liam Davies meat is rarely the main focus at restaurants like these anymore.
