  • Last night an interesting video showed up in my feed. It was from a newer CZcamsr named Grandma's Pocketbook. She talked about how she watched Sarasota Tim and started getting bad vibes. She ultimately decided to take her Social Security at age 62. Now she says she should have waited as now she is living in low income senior living.

Retiring at 62 is not the issue. Everyone should retire as soon as they are financially able to.
The problem with Tim Baker is that he advocates everyone start taking their SS at 62...which is a mistake for most people. If you take at 62, you are forfeiting 30% of what you are entitled to get. For Tim Baker to insist that everyone take less to somehow justify his mistake after being repeatedly corrected with facts, links and advice from financial professionals is the issue.

You are absolutely correct in the fact that not everyone should take SS at 62 . It solely depends on people’s obligations and total financial portfolio.
It’s only better at 62 if you live a long time after you start taking it .
Even though you are getting less money every month. If you do the math and say live 25 years longer? You actually would get more back over the longer term . Unfortunately most people don’t live that long . The government wants people to get it at full retirement. They really want people to wait as long as they can . Hoping you just get SS for like a few years. Then they keep the rest !

Hello my friend. Thank you for the shout out!
To be clear, I’m not a victim of Tim’s. I turned 62 in 2017, waaaay before Tim started making videos. I had stopped traveling and was living in my low income housing when I came across him. So Tim didn’t influence my decision to take SS at 62 at all. Unfortunately, he has convinced other people and that upsets me.
I watched a lot of Bob Wells and became friends with Debra Dickinson. Debra did a video with me way back when I decided to stop traveling. So no, I didn’t take Tim’s advice. But when I came across him advising people to jump in with both feet, retire and take SS at 62, I couldn’t believe it. It’s horrible advice.
I heard your wife at the end (Hi!!!) about my trailer. What I got, for those who are curious, was a Weeroll. They are made in Florida and a much better option than a traditional travel trailer. It had an RV door, barn doors in the back, electric, an AC opening, well insulated, Dexter axle. Back then they were much less expensive. They’ve gotten more expensive but still an excellent option. So I ordered one, drove to Ocala to pick it up and towed it out west to build it out with my brother in law’s help.
Again, thanks for the shout out. I do hope my video makes people think once, twice or a hundred times when making a decision regarding retirement and taking SS.
I’m vicariously enjoying your travels. Have a great weekend!

It's simple. If you DO NOT NEED the social security distribution to maintain your desired retirement lifestyle then begin distributions at age 62. If you fell short on investiments and income throughout your career to maintain a certain desired retirement income by age 62 then it would behoove you to DELAY drawing SS. It's not about getting it correct on which way you come out ahead in the end by drawing SS at various ages if you're broke, It's about maximizing your monthly distributions for your winter years so you can live a dignified life. A broke perrson doesn't have the option to draw early, The financially secure person can afford to assume the financial risk by drawing early.

I subscribed to grandma’s pocketbook and will check out her videos.
I’ve been very concerned about Tim encouraging people to retire at 62 just blindly. At first he would tell you make sure your debts are paid off and you have some savings but he doesn’t even say that anymore. We’re having to retire at just before 63 because my husband has mobility issues after two spinal surgeries didn’t fix his leg issues. He has a very hard physical job and works 12 hour shifts but works an hour away from home so he’s gone from 5:20 in the morning till 8 to 830 at night and he can’t do it anymore. So June 1 he’s retiring and we aren’t technically ready but Social Security and his pension will be more than enough to pay all of our bills and give us some extra and then like you when our car paid off in 14 months we will have another $600 . I’ve been a part-time reseller for 22 years so that’ll bring in enough extra for some fun stuff. Not ideal at all and I wouldn’t recommend anybody retiring this early unless you are ready but sometimes it’s out of your hands. I’m glad you were talking about this and letting people know so maybe some people won’t blindly take advice off of somebody on CZcams. I am sure there are plenty of people out there that took his advice and regretting it now. But you won’t know it , from what I hear he deletes comments he doesn’t like.
I’m hoping more CZcams creators, even the small ones will post about this because it really worries me that some people are going to be in a big mess.

Great video man. There is definitely something to be said about retiring early, but ONLY if one does the due diligence and does the research into it. For MOST people, it's not feasible for if nothing else, the medical coverage that is needed. I retired at sixty five and am comfortable, and if I'd have had an option I definitely would have gone maybe a year or two earlier as I financially was set, but that medicare was needed for me. Too many people don't really think enough about big decisions. I'm a HUGE advocate of getting a professional person's advice about the best time and way to retire. You and the wife seem like you have everything in order, and I'm happy for you. You indeed have a good life, and although I can't even "take" watching ST anymore, I do stumble across one of his videos occasionally (I mean, he posts about twenty videos a day about nothing, so I'll get a random one on my YT page) and just last night some sucker was buying him tacos for dinner. I have NO IDEA what's wrong with people who have no problem buying a grown man dinner night after night. LOL.

I read that Tim got a low-interest $50,000+ loan during COVID for businesses that were affected. He used the money to buy the new truck and camper. There are many people who have researched him. When you search his name, they all come up. Someone said that his loan payment is $300/month. Don't know if any of this is true . Do the research before taking the advice though.

Every lifestyle has pros and cons. From what I understand ST got COVID stimulus deal. That is how he got all the toys. But he does have to pay back. Just don't take everybody's word on everything! Do extensive research. Now I do have to agree with ST on the fact of collecting early. It is better and even people that are social security experts, have said that collecting at 62 is a positive thing. Because if you do get sick or extremely ill and then pass away,😢 you didn't have any time to enjoy your retirement. If you can wait till you're 64/65 then great! A lot of people cannot wait that long, and need to collect cuz, then in the long run they will get more money collecting early. Because they're not paying taxes, unemployment insurance and the like. Sometimes it's only difference of a couple of hundred dollars to wait till you're 64 or 65. The lifestyle can be beneficial as you can't afford to live in apartments or even mobile home parks with the expensive rents. You have to make at least three times the income if not more. Even RV parks are now requiring income verification and other background information. Also age on RVs and the like. If you have to buy a mobile home for a minimum of $100,000 or more, and then have to pay over $1,000 a month just in lot rent, and that's not including your utilities, property taxes your insurance and maintenance. So sometimes renting an apartment can be less expensive. But with all the requirements no one makes over 3-4 k plus a month on social security, to rent. So the only option might be living in a van R, camper, trailer, etc. So all these people that are putting down living a nomadic lifestyle needs to understand that, that could be the only choice. Not everybody can afford a sticks and bricks home. And what about the people that are on disability it's even worse. All the benefits of for people over 64 and that's not fair they need to really look at the people that are on disability. They're not allowed to have side jobs or any extra income etc. So yes do your research realize that somethings can cost more than others. I wouldn't take anybody's word for anything and you have to watch a wide range of CZcamsrs to know what the lifestyle is about. Not everyone on CZcams is making big money. CZcams has done a lot of revamping so now Tubers are not getting compensated as much as when it first came on board. Just everyone be cautious and again do your research. Nice vid❤

Who did he “victimize”? Has he solicited money from anyone ? You can disagree with his philosophy (which I do) but to claim that he has “victimized” anyone is borderline slanderous. He is simply expressing his opinion and what works for him. Anyone who takes his opinion as advice and follows through on it without doing their own due diligence is acting irresponsibly. Happily we live in a free country thanks to the many people who have fought for our rights not a good idea to tell the world about your financial status as it is no one’s business and you sound like a bragger. I am a you tube observer and I take everyone’s opinions with a grain of salt people do not have to follow what they hear on you tube maybe this woman thought it was a good idea so she tried it and guess what sounds like it wasn’t for her so she moved onto something else I don’t think you are gathering all the information to make a fair judgement call. when to take your SS is a gamble as you get older your benefit goes up but so does cost of living and your health declines and you become closer to death hoping. to be able to retire at all solely on SS is really just a myth and it looks like you are aware of this based on your life style share your journey as your title states stop worrying about what other people are doing or people will stop watching your videos for that reason
