Cai Guo-Qiang “The Making of Odyssey”

This video documents the creation of Cai Guo-Qiang's monumental gunpowder drawing, Odyssey, an ethereal landscape that lines the four walls of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Arts of China Gallery. The installation envelopes the gallery's display of ancient Asian artifacts. Created over several days in October 2010, the piece was created on 42 separate panels and stands at 162-by-10 feet. With his work at the MFAH, Guo-Qiang has produced his first permanent, site-specific installation in a United States museum.

I saw an exhibit of his work at the Guggenheim Museum in New York 10 or 15 years ago. I instantly became a huge fan.

Thank you for showing the process of making this piece of art. It is modern and contemporary, and yet it carries on from the finest of the thousand-year artistic tradition. The finished painting creating from an instant explosion is no-doubt spiritual child of past masters such as Huang Gong-wang (14th century) and Bada Shanren (17th century), where the mountain and streams are reminiscent of Huang's "Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains" and lotus and flowers from Bada's Lotus Handscroll. You surely have a timeless masterpiece in your museum!
