  • In this piano tutorial, I will walk you through a few steps you can take to effectively learn any Bach Fugue on the piano. I will use examples from the opening of the Fugue No. 9 from the Well Tempered Clavier Book 2.

    My friends and I sometimes try to go acapella on the wtc fugues… things pianists do when bored 😂

    One of the best fugues Bach has ever written, the coda blows my away every time I hear it.

    A good very clear video. Thank you.
    I’ve always wondered how people could do what seems like magic to me.
    Very logical.
    Having just learned Prelude 1 in C this gives me the courage to start on Fugue 1 - one voice at a time!

    I'm working on a fugue for my RCM10 exam, and this is extremely helpful. Thank you for sharing this knowledge!

      What's an RCM10 exam? I'm really curious to know although it might appear to be a silly question

      @@jazzygiraffe8589 Not a silly question! RCM is the royal conservatory of music. They proctor exams from level 1 to diploma that come with a certificate, etc. A lot of teachers will include an RCM certificate as part of their qualifications

    This is way out of my pay grade. But I will remember this lesson and when the time comes, I will follow your advice. Merci beaucoup.

    thanks for this 🙏🏾 I have a few fugues that i'm learning for a competition, including a 20th century one by Ravel. Thankfully that one is only 3 voices, but still hard to tackle 😅

    Great video. I have another way (I speak of the stretto fugue of BWV 846): sing like a sheep whenever the bass comes in: 'baa' 'baa' baa' (this actually works). I suppose I should try doing the 'baa' for all the voices...

    This is how my concert pianist professor teaches too, even for non-fugue songs! I thought it’s too hard core to study each voice independently in detail, and trying various combination of voices together with singing. But looks like this is what advanced pianists have to do 😅

    Great method Elena. Thank you for sharing. One of the difficult things you only touched on was fingering. What advice could you give for deciding on a good fingering? Sometimes the middle voices could be played by either hand. Some fugues are much more difficult to finger than others. Maybe in a future video?

      That always annoyed me when learning piano. If it's not charted, how do you decide? Maybe I didn't take enough lessons.

    I am very new and I only just learned #1 prelude in C maj - so I only found this because I am just looking for advice about learning any of the fugues ... but this does overwhelm me. Maybe in time I'll accept this - but I'm not a sight reader so ... sigh

  • @christopherdew2355
    @christopherdew2355 Před měsícem

    What about fingering and parts distributed between the hands? I find it's better to get the 'mechanics' of playing the fugue well underway before distracting myself by trying to listen to individual voices - during which time everything falls apart! - and thereafter attend to voicing of parts and shaping sections and the overall texture.
