Southern took this win. TC sound good but I expect that since their Director is a SU man himself and you can hear SU style in all their songs. Southern is the ultimate marching band. Trust me, when you put that SU uniform on your body the feeling is indescribable. You just know you are marching with the #1 ranked hbcu band on this planet. No other band can or will attempt to go out and drill the games halftime score. Southern is the only band who can successfully succeed drilling scores. That's a unique trademark of The Human Jukebox marching band.
I enjoyed this better than the last 10 years of the BOTB in New Orleans.

You gotta give credit where credit is due. Southern is a world known power house. So for Talladega to be able to go toe to toe after being a program for only a matter of a few years..... THAT SPEAKS VOLUMES. They even have a catalog already and the band as a whole is disciplined which means they're hungry and eager to learn. They may sound like a "high school" now, but I give them a few years and they gonna be a force to be reckoned with. Ya'll better not sleep on Dega! But good battle overall!

Not only a football team, people have to realize it costs money to have athletic programs. They would have to meet all sorts of standards for others sports as well to play in the NCAA.
SU got slapped right in the mug in round one. They thought it was going to be an open and shut win for them, but we all saw that it came down to the wire instead. Whether the diehard SU fans admit it or not, this match-up is debatable in favor of either band.

One of the most entertaining battles of ALL time. Reminds me of the battles we (SU) had against Grambling in 1980. SU exemplified an organization of continuity and consistency, made for these type of moments. Taladega made a statement to the world that they are on the map and will demand respect but it's going to take CONTINUITY which comes with time. Awesome battle: SU 10 TC 8.... FLEE/80

I think the fact that they were so close played a big part in the intensity of the battle. There should be more HBCU battles at parades.

yo J, I glanced at your instagram and noticed " The Roof and Spend some time" man those are great songs. I Marched for Miguel at Fortier in 98 before Brimmer returned. He is intense about taking it up an octave which sometimes left us sounding pretty bad, but overall I liked Bonds, He never ran from a battle and It made it exciting as a young band member. As an adult I got more into the overall essence of written music and the dynamics of each instrument. SU has Masterful writers, as well as tremendous Student arrangers. I honestly feel like SU has the best book of all HBCUs. Stll impressed at what Bonds is building at Talladega. Once he gets them use to more complex arrangements then an argument could be had on where they stand. I'm not going to jump to conclusions and say that Dega will be a top band cause I said that about TXSU and then they declined to almost irrelevancy. But Good luck to Dega. SU will never be duplicated tho.
mikedaflexta Thx, I did a ton tunes for different bands. dancing to the rhythm, Moving On, Sade by R Kelly, and more that all got a lot of love. Im grateful for being able to make folks happy. You can find NCAT, Kennedy, and Carver playing "Is It A Crime" on youtube. I still get tune requests for lots of directors but I'm done. Sorta lost the love and also had little time to focus on doing arrangements.
Anyway,
Nothing wrong with Miguel building a program. He seems to be a good motivator. Just wish TC had their own identity as that would have made it pretty special. I heard them last year and thought they had a very nice sound. Then I remembered my boy Eric French telling about something about them when I passed thru Alabama a while back. Heard them at the Baachus recently and they still had a nice sound. Peeped the SU battle on youtube and it seemed like they were trying to do to much.
As for as 8va's, I love em when they are played with control but you still need the support of the original pitches(as written). Most don't realize the simple physics(for lack of a better explanation)...as the pitch gets higher the tone pretty much gets thinner. Audible but may lack power. Give me a full and powerful band any day over a loud and empty one. It bugged me out to here my own arrangements where bands didnt play all the parts(chords and harmonies). That just took away from the sound of the arrangement. Don't get me started on Tubas and F-horns playing 8va's..smh. kills me for the most part...lol.
But hey it is what it is. New school bandhead stuff.
The fall band unit performed well played music as written. eight or nine btones are not going match 15 or 14 b tones blastin whole notes. I hope they could meet @ a battle of the bands during the football season find some sponsors to sponsor it Like Coca Cola and others -hold it in a Stadium Setting invite some high school bands maybe a swac band or another college band

this battle got boring after SU played better believe it. There was a reason SU said aye Talladega you sound like a high school band and SU got real basic afterwards. Beyond was a test to see if dega had anything to match. And they did not. Both bands were good I personally enjoyed Southern trust me there will be another battle and it's gonna be the better than this one you know talladega gotta prove a point. The only band that can go toe to toe with SU is JSU

I'm a fan of SU and TC but I have to give it to SU why because a real battle is not bout how loud you can be if you don't have dynamics range volume and variety you'll sound like a high school band and Beyond is one of those songs that has all that in one now TC had thuggish thuggish but I was there in person it was kinda sloppy but SU won this one

So when SU takes an L to Famu they say "we had more power and they sounded weak for their size" and when they take an L to TC they say "they were just loud and sloppy"!
Y'all are kicks. TC actually had way less hangovers and sounded more crisp and full. Although SU has over all better arrangements. TC defeated SU 6 rounds to 4. The last round was a tie.
As much as I want to be biased, TC musicality overall is better. Ofcourse Southern is the human jukebox for a reason. I was surprised

This was the last time Dega was even close to being in the battle against SU. And They Still Loss!!! But this one was Dega's best! They caught a lot of people by surprise with their wattage. That and most of the people there never even heard of Talladega College! They did a great job introducing themselves that day! 🧐😲👏💪
But don't forget that wasn't SU's whole band that day. Not that they needed the whole band because they had plenty with what they brought! Most of the crowd had heard southern all year, but the songs Dega played was new to their ears. Not saying they were better songs, just different. But you have to be out of your mind if you think Dega sounded better. THEY DID NOT! But This Was A HallOfFame Battle! Great Job by both Schools! This battle set the bar, And They Set It High!!!

I'm outside the lines of being bias for neither school. TC's issue is the tubas, the arrangements and the lack of technique. Sound and volume wise they are the exact twin to SU. Now if TC can play STEVIE WONDER's contusion like SU can, then I'll be totally convinced. But at this moment SU takes the W. TC, play more than just whole, half and quarter notes loud as hell and plays runs,8th and16th notes more often. Key word, technique. Sorry if it hurt and TC bias fans out there but I'm for neither side like I said. I'm all bout the sound I hear tight'n up TC.

Not saying SU took an L, but I will point out flaws of both bands.
SU
TUBAS are not in sync. Different articulations and mismatched timing while playing their parts. When they take things up an octave it sounds God awful. They should stop doing that...forever.
TRUMPETS are always more focused on playing Fortissimo than actually playing together as a unit. Constant missed pitches, attempts at playing higher notes fall short (usually flat or a wrong pitch altogether) for the majority of those attempting. Runs are hardly ever cleanly articulated with every note heard clearly. Runs end up sounding like flutters for lack of a better term...
If balance among the entire band was an issue I might have more volume from Trombones and French Horns. They sound good enough to me it's just the Tyrannosaurus Baritones, off rhythm tubas, and God awful trumpets cover other sections up at times. This may not be factual. I'm making this judgement from the videos audio which might not accurately give us a good sense of volume for each instrument group. This is dependent on the mic used, number of mics used, placement of mic(s), and mixing and mastering of the videos audio if any was done...but you all don't care about that so I'll move on.

FRENCH HORNS have potential. You can definitely hear them sounding great on some song selections. Unfortunately, you hear them extremely flat on other song selections and as the song continues they never seem to get back in tune or hit pitches spot on like I know they can. They are capable of doing so, but they need to be more consistent. Their range is great, hitting notes in upper registers like SU can. If I were to judge based off the video, I would say SU is more consistent in hitting higher pitches at the moment. SU French horns also stay in tune slightly more as a section giving them another edge over TC. BUT...for all you volume fanatics, TC was "louder".
CONCLUSION
The rest of TC brass section is cleaner than SU. Some argue that TC arrangements are a factor. That to me is just an excuse. SU does have more complex and musical arrangements, but (in concert terms) what good is a band playing a level 6 piece and not executing it properly? I'd take a band playing a level 4 piece and playing it well over a band messing up a beautiful level 6 arrangement.
Lastly, people argue that SU did not have their full band. Excuses are tools of incompetence. Based on the various video recording of this battle, TC seems more powerful.
Take a look at SU, they have 15 Tubas and they are legendary as this nearly untouchable SWAC band. TC has 17 Tubas (Very clean and cohesive tubas I might add). Does 2 tubas really make that much of a volume difference against the almighty SU? Because other than the tuba sections, both bands have a near even number of brass. I rest my case...
And for anyone who cares I have a BA in Music Technology with 4 years of Music Theory. I'm currently receiving a MFA in Sound Design. I have 13 years of experience in symphonic, jazz, and marching bands ranging from middle school to collegiate level. IM NO EXPERT, but I know a thing or two.

Let me educate both of you. One i agree about Southern tubas they need to play together more but if you have nothing to say about TC baritone or about the trumpets getting covered then your band must have been ass. I also noticed that you said tc was louder. 1st off revisit the video and observe how many people were in front of Southern then look at TC. People take up sound so you would never know how loud Southern was, also TC's baritone ever slightly above the band. Does this matter yes it does with 13 years of experience I shouldn't have to tell you why this fact is important nor should I have to say anything about the cleanliness of either band. Yes Southern was sloppy but TC was also trumpets with both bands were hitting and missing but with 13 years of experience you should know that EVERYTHING trumpet player misses that's just trumpets their ignorant and mess up great tunes. And if you have nothing to say about TC not having control then you have definitely wasted 13 years of your life. And in closing if you were to ever go to LMEA please do me a favor and bring a college band (because last i checked these are both college bands) and play a Grade 3 piece of music and please let me see the score sheet.

I'm going to ignore your blatant disrespect in your comments and focus on your arguments only.
Neither band is perfect sir and I stated that. We all appreciate your opinions and critiques of TC.
I agree that a group of people, or any objects in front of a source of sound, will block or absorb some level of volume. If you are standing behind all these people, your ears are not hearing the full volume of the band you are trying to listen to.
However sir, take a look at 2:36 on the video and pause it. Our camera men at this event had the right idea. All the cameras are raised several feet above the heads of the people in the "crowd." I Don't think your argument is valid several feet above everyone's head, but at ground level yes it would be valid.
Next, the camera man for this video is obviously several feet closer to SU than he is TC. This means there were less people in front of this camera man on this video and there would have been less of a blocked sound for SU. My argument still stands based on the camera audio and distance from the camera to each band that TC had more volume. As you said, they had more people in front soaking up sound right? Oh, and they're further away from the camera.

Honestly. Just listened to the whole battle without looking at it. Talladega was nice. Btones awesome!!!!! BUT SU trumpets and Tubas ate the whole battle. Talladega was a crowd pleaser, but SU's musicality and arrangements are second to none!!!!!. Volume wise nobody out blew anybody with the exception of Talladega's btones. if had this been judged by a panel of judges,SU would be considered the winner. but Talladega would have definitely won viewers choice. I'm gonna give TC more than credit. They went toe to toe with arguably the best and held their own. I'm biased of course being an SU Alumn, but I'm not gonna simply quote "SU" or say silly shit like the whole band wasn't there....whatever! TC held their own better than some SWAC bands would have especially that Grambling Garbage! This was great theatre though. Loved the look on some SU fans after TC chanted back, like "shyt is real"...lol

Just because they gave SU a black eye doesn't mean they can just kick SU's tail any day. . It takes a little more than just being loud to Challenge for supremacy. You need volume, technicality, dynamics, and a book. I like TC and I think SU slept on them and got sucker punched. Kinda like what happened in 2000 when we (MBC) went to Baton Rouge.

Southern WON this battle. Arrangements and song selections are key and TC doesn't have enough good songs. TC first song was strong and on point but then they started to go down hill after about 20 minutes. No one wants to hear George Michael or Billy Ocean. TC need better arrangements to outshine the mighty Human Jukebox. Southern made their point and exited. Every bandhead knows SU has an extensive book of songs and could have played all night. TC has a good band. They just need to invent their own identity and stop trying to copy Southerns. They will never become Southern. There will be only 1 Southern. If they wish to stop hearing the SU stigma, they need to stop writing arrangements on the SU style and using SU drills. If not, then they will remain in Southerns shadows forever and that would be sad. Just keeping it real TC and good luck to you guys.

Funny how people try to compare these two bands, yes TC is loud, so what, who isn't loud on rap tunes playing whole notes and quarter notes. Is that what equates a "win" in a band battle now? Yes TC for a very young program sounds good but they need their directors to start writing "college" arrangements for them. Southern's book has always been very deep and diverse, when TC can match them with different genre of music song for song, then I'll consider it a battle.

SirGeekz Honestly, SU could have called off the parade tunes and smashed TC playing wise. All we learned from this is that TC has volume. They wanted attention and now they have it. Along with attention comes critics and most of the criticism of TC are valid, not hate.

CDBphotos honestly, this proves more than volume. Volume comes from dedication in the members of the band. TC on the come up . admit it . and if SU would have taken this little parade a lil more serious, a close battle wouldn't have been the result. we all know SU has a book for days and they have great musicians. TC is just a college. For a college, they sound good . Im a Marching Wildcat btw
SU hit TC with two heavy hitters right out of the gate, but TC responded with a rap tune after SU played "Beyond." Those are two serious tunes, but TC really didn't respond with anything better imo. SU was basically playing games with them people. If you're impressed with their volume I can understand that, but they offered nothing else bruh.

The first 8 measures of that song trumped everything TCs mellos did in the whole 45mins. Point: the battle was over BEFORE the break.
I've watched this darn thing 4 times now. Each time SU wins by a wider margin. TC can play the hell out of some open whole notes. But these arrangements and that musicianship at TC just really cannot come close to the Jukebox. Real talk, everyone is all excited about TC because they are the new girl at the school. They cannot come close to any of the powers in the band world. That will take a long time. Marching bands are more than just playing. SU can do it all and that is what makes them #1 year in and year out. Can TC put on a great halftime show? No one knows... but I bet they would try to copy SU like they do for everything else.
