It helps us define the conditions of a good choice and then figure out which of all the options available to us is the best one.
Ethics is the process of questioning, discovering and defending our values, principles and purpose. It’s about finding out who we are and staying true to that in the face of temptations, challenges and uncertainty. It’s not always fun and it’s hardly ever easy, but if we commit to it, we set ourselves up to make decisions we can stand by, building a life that’s truly our own and a future we want to be a part of.

I can help Lee without breaking his trust. Like telling our other friends to be patient, to be compassionate and delve deeper why he did those actions. And if they won't listen, then maybe Lee is not in the correct inner circle because true friends will accept who you are and will try to understand you.

Or why couldn't you also go back to Lee and say that people aren't psychic and misinterpret Lee's flakiness for not caring about his friendships when it isn't them at all; and that if you share these issues with friends they are likely to be more understanding and empathetic and if not then Lee can't be in those circles.

Mention to your mutual friend that maybe Lee is going through something and needs some space at the moment. Trust remains,friend backs off,problem solved. We all do at times.
The only thing is depending on the friend, they may still view that as a breach of confidentiality and respond in anger as them going through something makes them vulnerable and they are scared of being percieved as weak by others. It's a hard situation. I thought what if you asked lee if you could tell them they are going through something, but they may then view your frustrated friend as being aggressive and then respond to them in a negative way therefore creating conflict.
Jade Noble-Day also a good point. The conflict however is not of your doing. It is unfair of Lee, after you have stayed true to your promise to then pick a side or sit be involved in the conflict. Some issues have multiple paths of resolution, while some seem to narrow down towards a conflict that needs to be resolved or that will resolve a situation. I don’t believe in heading straight toward conflict as an option but if all paths have been closed then it is a healthy way to get a situation sorted out?

Why not go back to Lee and explain what the other friend had said and encourage Lee to reach out or talk about the possibility of you speaking on lees behalf of the topic arises again. This dilemma occurs mainly because you feel you can’t go back and explain the situation to Lee? In saying that, the comment above saying about “mentioning how lee might be going through something and to ease off” is a good way of preserving both also.
I agree. There was more than the 2 choices presented. There was also the option that, while not solving the dilemma, made the correct decision easier to identify (assuming there actually was a decision that needed to be made by you).
The clear next step was simply to talk to Lee about your dilemma, and listen to what Lee had to say. Maybe Lee could have given you the answer in relation to which choice was the better one in terms of both values and principles.
The key is that every person has their own values and principles. So, why not just ask Lee, to find out this person's values and principles? They matter too. In fact, in this case, Lee's position on the question is more relevant than yours because it is about Lee and Lee's welfare.
It's still not the answer to the dilemma, but a necessary step to take before acting only on your own values and principles, in my opinion. You need to collect all relevant information before you can every begin to make a "right" choice.

@@CatMcMAC agreed, ask Lee if he believes that by opening up will it help solve his dilemma. Discuss with him as he has opened up tp you, meaning trust is there. If not then we not only break his trust, but it may force him to further isolate himself. In the end, making a decision, an ethical one, involves others. If not everyone would do their own thing. Only when Lee is contemplating self-harm then we would step in as at that point

I think what's missing from many discussions about ethics and ethical choices people must make is the importance of the very first step. Before making a decision, gather all the information that is or may be relevant. This step must be taken before a choice is made, or even can be made, if framed in the context of any of all of an individual's core values.
I'm not sure whether this step was just assumed would had been done in the hypothetical situation put to us. Even it it was, I think this should have been added to the hypothetical. Why? Because if real life, in the real world, major decisions which impact millions of human lives are being made by people who have not availed themselves of all of the relevant information. Either they haven't researched and taken advice on both the things that influence their decisions and the consequences of their decisions, or they are aware but their decisions are based on an ideological concept. In these cases, the decisions are simply not ethical decisions.
In our own lives, it's likely that the decisions made by you, I, and every Lee in our communities don't directly impact millions of lives. The point is the same. Information gathering in order to make even a rudimentary ethical cost/benefit analysis, is crucial. The reality is different though. We make most daily decisions automatically because most choices are small inconsequential matters in our day to day lives.
As we make so many choices every day, our brains are in the habit of making quick choices. Habits are ingrained behaviour patterns. Put simply, more of us should stop before we make a decision that will impact another person and get the all of the facts available to us first. Easier said than done! :)

It could be that it is an act sublimation. Lee has made a conscious decision to share the problem of his depression with another person, which is a sign of a cry for help, and if explaining the basics of the issue to friends and alerting them to be sensitive with him helps, then it is potentially for the ultimate good of Lee. Andreas Lubitz, the Pilot of the German Wings plane, which he deliberately crashed into a mountain, had a mental health problem that his doctor kept confidential and did not inform the airline: result, 144 dead passengers and crew.
If they could speak from the grave I wonder what their opinion on the subject of confidentiality would be.
It was totally illegal for the doctor to keep that secret, for obvious reasons. He should have lost his license to practice and faced lawsuits.

The purpose of friendship - if one can state such simply - is surely more than to 'share someone's life with them - highs and lows'... It is also to look out for them; support them through crises; defend them within social groups. Hence talking to Lee again and explaining how others might view what Lee does is a good act for a friend. Breaking confidence by saying anything about Lee to the criticising friend is generally the wrong move. The Samaritans (help-liine in UK/Ireland) have good guidelines on confidentiality. For example, if you form the view that Lee is incapable of making a decision then your obligation to protect them overrides your commitment to confidentiality.

This strikes a fine balance of acting in the interests of a person, but preserving their right to make their own decisions, and deserving their confidence. It's about the best response to the question I've seen in this comments section.
There is another way of dealing with that third friend, you could say "I think Lee is going through a tough time at the moment, please have patience and try again"
I would talk to Lee about the issue the 3rd guy is having. maybe try to convince Lee to come out and seek help.
What if Lee's other friend also expressed their concern in confidence? There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to ethics or contemporary moral issues. Just a lot of opinions.

One point of confusion--In the beginning we see that values, principles, beliefs and norms comprise ethics. But by the end, we've applied values and principles, and when in need of more, then we rely on purpose. That seems right, but couldn't beliefs and norms reasonably be set aside as hopelessly transient or contingent, I'd suggest, for use in ethical dilemmas?

I should add that if a student in your class contracts covid and gets sick he or she has the right to sue you and your university (since they have the deep pockets). As a teacher you have an obligation to keep your students safe. Perhaps this is the point where your freedom of action and conscience collides with the rights of your students and your higher obligation is to them, Perhaps your best solution is to take a leave of absence or a sabbatical and write that book you've been meaning to write.
you have no idea whether her getting a vaccine will protect her students or give them covid from taking the shot and the shot does not give any promises that they will not get covid so your argument is irrelevant.
I would like to mention that life isn't always black and white. You can honour your word and still do what is other's best interest. You could not tell anyone about Lee's depression, but you could share that Lee has a lot on his plate at the moment. Ethics usually forget there is a grey area.

Yes, think about values and purpose, and realize how these concepts represent your own personal bias drawn from the personal biases of other people that you may think know better than you do. Think about how safe and superior it makes you feel to "know" you have done the right thing. Now look deeper.
If you are saying "there is no right thing" or all ethics are just subjective cultural values, I would disagree.
People do the right thing even in cases where it hurts them. The value human beings place on ethics is much greater than we do on mere cultural practices.

Here's a recap of what the video said. Nobody has a clue what ethics is. Nobody knows what is right or wrong, it's just up to you to decide what is right and wrong for you.
Just like Socrates, the only thing I know is that I know nothing, because all of these guidelines are different from people to people, these "guidelines" maybe identical, maybe overlapping, but they're independent from one another.
The overlap is the issue. Ethics are not infinitely flexible, within one ethical system or across ethical systems. There are emergent patterns and that is what ethics concerns itself with: the nature and uses of those patterns.

Value to choose is ambiguous. It is dependent on which value you value the most in each individual situation and context. 🤔
What value to choose sounds subjective. I choose the value I like the most? That seems to be an explanation of what I chose and not what is ethical in that situation. David-Hume's Is-Ought Gap haunts modern philosophy to this day. Essentially, how do we scientifically prove something ethical? Mainstream philosophy/science/psychology does not know.

Good and bad, right and wrong are subjective terms. You have to decide for yourself which is what. People can't even agree that life is worth living. For many, it's worth losing.
Good and bad, right and wrong are subjective to a point. This is technically true, but pragmatically it would be counter intuitive and just cause more problems with this line of thinking. The last two sentences seems like depression. I'm not mocking you for this because I have depression too. Depression effects something called thought patterns, or put simply, the way your brain is thinking over a period of time and how it makes you act. You are espousing nihilism here, which is technically true, there is no inherent meaning in the universe, but practically speaking if everyone thought this way we would be tearing ourselves apart. I would respond and say look into some existentialist philosophy. I'm not a psychologist or anything, but I've had that same line of reasoning and it really messes with how you live.
"Pleasure good" and "pain bad" is not subjective. Philosophers do not know why, but these concepts exist solidly in every one of us.
I believe we naturally have desires that motivate us into action. Regardless of our beliefs, our existence has parts to it we want to satisfy. People want and seek happiness, life satisfaction, and good feelings. We are naturally drawn to these things as well as being drawn into wanting to do good with others.
Your argument is existentialism, the part that we decide life's meaning for ourselves.

See what decision suits better the situation and consider it. But, before acting, show and explain to lee the reason you will act this way so he can know beforehand. Dialoguing this way you'll be faithful to him anyway. And if you think you should tell someone, at least he would know your motivation (to help him).

Quantity of decisions matters a lot because quality of the decision making is directly related to choice fatigue.
We need to clear it first with the individual, before we share sensitive information.
Using Kant's formulations, discern the correct answer to this scenario:
-Person A and Person B have been best friends for 6 years.
-Person A has been dating Person C for 3 years.
-Person A and Person C stop dating
- 1 year later Person C and Person B start dating. Person A is upset about this.
-Person A and Person B argue over whether or not Person B is allowed to date Person C because Person C is th Person A's ex.
Question: What is the problem in this situation?
The decision belongs uniquely to Person C.

The primary reason we have Ethics is for establishing Social Norms and rules so we can live together. If we got rid of them then people would always do what is better for them and not others. Wonder why we are treating the Earth so bad then? We would rather drive our cars than save the Earth.
I do not think it is an a priori argument that ethics is for social norms. Balancing my interests against the interests of others oftentimes creates conflict, and rules in our private or even public lives does not rid us of conflict.

That person who complained is not a real friend and Lee would probably be much better off without him/her.
Also, be careful not to make hasty judgments/ draw conclusions too soon. What if Lee’s depression is self- diagnosed and he/she feels like he/she does because he/she works two unfulfilling jobs to care for his/her two kids, sleeps poorly, and the complaining friend had said or done to him/her something that contributed to him/ her feeling like that?
My point is- do not assume anything. And keep your mouth shut- at least until you understand what is going on.

After that you go talk to Lee and be like "yo homie thinks you're flaking on him OD and shit I think you should tell him whats good if he tries to ask you" and then boom everyones on board.

That is a tough decision. There are ethics classes and some private colleges have Christian Ethics class. In any case, I do not know what degree you would want. College degrees cost a lot of money and many degrees (like art and sociology) cost a lot and the jobs offered for graduates pay very little.
I would research David Hume's "Is-Ought Gap" if you love ethics.
