Good job! I wish you have captured cambelt taking-off process itself but you made everything look easy :) good luck with your IS
Laszek#LSZ thanks dude, The belt simply just slides off really easy And as you put the new one on your manually pulling light tension so it's hard to mess up 👍
dave did mine today video helped a lot apart from the crank bolt but found another video online using the old drive belts you take off as a tensioner to hold pulley and it works a treat keep up the good videos very informative and helpfull
Can send me the link to that vedio ? Would be great help am willing to do it myself.
fantastic video very clear and explanation fantastic makes me feel brake enough to attempt my own now thankyou
Thanks dude 😁
Thanks for the vid. Gonna do this soon, don't want that old belt snapping on me. No idea when it was changed last time. I'm gonna do the starter blip to loosen the crank pulley bolt
Wasn't sure when my belt was changed when i picked up the car so for the price I paid for the car the belt kit was worth doing.😁
I'm replacing mine very soon, I've been looking for a good instructional video, yours is by far the best I've found so far. Cheers dude!
Cheers mate 👍 if you need any help when doing it just drop me a comment, I'll be glad to help 🙂
If you're changing to another type of coolant, remember to drain the Engine Block too, the petcock/drain Valve for the block coolant is located under the inlet manifold👍👍 AND do remember not to use a coolant that exceeds a mixing of over 70% ethylene glycol.
Great video Dave, thanks....and good follow up advice too. Cheers!
Thanks dude
Hi Great video, how does the tensioner work? How do you take it off and on? Thanks
Very clear and concise video, thank you! And kudos for taking the time to answer everyone on here.
Thanks dude 😁
Dave such a great video ned to do mine soon vid really helped
No probs roon, gimme a shout if you need help seeing we're locals 😂
Excellent video! Thank you!
This video was so helpful in helping me to do a job that I’d been putting off for ages. Thanks a million for this bro, it really helped 😁🙏🏼
No probs dude 😁
Did mine today. Video helped alot, so big thanks for that mate. I noticed something strange though - when i make the rotations somethimes the belt gets a bit loose on the right side where the idler and oil pump are. Sometimes it stays tight. The marks stay on spot however and the engine starts and seems to run ok. Im wondering if thats fine or i need to adjust something.
Should be okay it's all auto tensioned and you probably gaining tension under compstroke before your slack spot appears at a guess 👍🏿
Hi, is it possible to share the workshop manual or torques specs used on the timing bearings please
What are the belts called please? There are 3 rib and 4 rib belts...
Excellent video Dave, really useful as I need to do mine soon. One thing I don't understand though, do you need to lock the flywheel or cam sprocket? If so where and what with?
Thanks dude😁 and you dont lock the cam sprocket, you just make sure all your timing marks are lined up before the belt comes off and before it goes back on. 👍🏿
@@browndave3144 That's great to know and thank you for getting back so quick.
Is it necessary to raise the front of the car, just makes things easier?
Looks like my first cambelt change will be happening very soon!
@@jamesthomas-uc9wq yh raising it up just makes it alot easier to view and undo necessary bits dude, but its possible without it in the air.👍🏿
Thanks again Dave! Take care
Hi Dave, very informative vid! I just wanted to ask whether you had to remove & replace the non-reusable cam-pulley set bolt? I'm about to do my own timing belt replacement! cheers
Hey Thomas, nope the cam pulley was never removed so i never had to replace that bolt
Thanks for the response Dave!
@@browndave3144 One more question! How did you re-tighten the crank bolt? with a gun or did you secure it and tighten with a torque wrench? I've got an auto so im not too sure if i should be putting it in 'drive' gear to help break the bolt in the first place..
@@ThomasWilkinson000 sorry for late reply been away. I'm not too sure on autos but P or D should offer enough resistance to work and you can use a torque wrench but i just used the breaker bar until i couldn't get it any tighter.
Good video. 👍
Thanks
Seems like a bit of a nightmare changing it. Lot of things to remove before getting to the main job!
It's probably one of the easiest I've ever had to do on car. It just looks like a lot of work
What are timing marks on the crankshaft ...lets say the belt break or slipped which marks will I align to on the crankshaft
Thnx very helpfull!
Hi brown dave is there anyway i can contact you as i need advice. Basically I have bought a is 200 and I have noticed it is out by one tooth I have lined the crankshaft pulley to 0 and the cam pulley is now just gone past tdc is there anything I can do to get to tdc the car drives fine but only start up a feel a slight pulse
Hey dude, If it is a tooth out and it's running okay at least theres no damage. I'd personally strip it down and realign everything if it was me dude
my is200 has around 80k miles from the last belt change.
should i change it?
i checked the belt and is looking good.
I probably would mate
Thanks for the video Dave. I’ve got the same one in automatic and I’m just thinking whether I should take the risk and change it myself. I’m scared I’ll mess it up. Are you able to help me if I decide to change it myself?
If your local buddy I could possibly lend a hand. It's pretty easy to be fair, one of the easiest cambelts I've ever had to do 👌🏾
Thanks for the offer but sorry it won’t work as I’m overseas. Would you be able to help if I get stuck?
I could take pictures or videos.
Cheers
Yh no problem just drop me a message and I'll happily help dude👍🏿
Brown Dave
Hi Dave,
Where are you located?
I’ve got a IS200 SE 1Gfe and I’ve got my belt, tensioner and water pump.
Is it necessary to take the rad n fan off?
It seems there’s enough space to access everything.
I’ve done the drive belts without taking the rad n fan off.
@@mohammedrashid1972
Hello, I'm from the Midlands UK, and you can do the all the work without removing radiator/fans but its does make it alot harder with the limited space
Hey mate I had my belt changed about a year ago but checked on it recently I can actually move the belt on the cam pully front to back with my hands should this be loose like that or do I need to change the tensioner cheers
Hello mate, if you can move the belt by hand so it's skipping teeth on the top pulley then it's definitely too loose. I'd check the tensioner and make sure the fitting pin has be removed.
Thanks
@@browndave3144 hello mate so I can't make it skip a tooth but it does move back and forwards on the pully like towards the engine and to front of the car so I fear it could slip off but it's not loose enough to skip a tooth just wondering if they just do that or maybe it is too loose thanks for the reply was wondering if you or anyone else has noticed the same thing.
What did you use the cover the top of the cylinder? - "in order not to miss a tooth". It looks like tissue paper.
And by replacing the water pump, wouldn't it be necessary to drain and top up the coolant? if so, how much coolant to use.
Justin Lee I removed plugs so none of the cylinders could sit on compression to help it not skip a tooth and tissue paper just to stop anything falling down the plug holes. As for fluid amounts I got them of the web off spec sheets can't remember the exact amounts.
Thanks for the reply. What about the seals of the cam? is it necessary to replace them as well?
Current situation- 81k miles but the cambelt (19 years old) currently is from the factory.
If there not weeping or leaking and you haven't disturbed the seals I'd leave them. The O.E. stuff tends to be pretty bullet proof
Thank you very much for the insight to this removal.
Hi there dave.could you please della me the nm to tighten the camshaft and crank shaft Bolt? Thank you
How did you get the crank pulley bolt off.. Having a hard time
UFO Club X pop it in gear, get a solid bar on it and turn it till all tension is taken up. Then get someone to wack the bar with a mallet while you hold the tension
used old belt doubled it up round waterpump pulley as a tensioner worked for me there is a video online crankshaft bolt removal shows how to fold old belt cheaper than a tool
Is it counterclockwise to loosen?
Can u just undo the tensioner like that? My Allen key bolt that Bolts in to the block is really hard to get off. Is it left threaded or something?
Standard thread but try using a small tube to extend your allen key and it should break free.
@@browndave3144 Yeah worked! The timing belt seems tight when putting it on and ive not pulled the tensioner pin out, whats the problem? I really need to force the belt on if so.
@@mr.warhead9166 that sounds about right, try putting the belt on first (will still feel tight) then fitting the tensioner after the belt, check timing and pull the pin.
@@browndave3144 worked, thanks alot! Appreciate it!😁😁
How much did the entire kit cost?
Cedrick Powell think it was about £160
Hi Dave... i was changing the timing belt on a 1gfe donor engine as my old one seized(most expensive oil change ever) long story. Now i have everything in the car... i changed the timing belt and lined up all the marks correctly... But i am unable to turn the cam by hand/rachet more than 1/4 Rotation... do you know why this is happening. Did i need to take the Rocker cover off and cam pulley off First(i just rotated it back to 0 as it was 8 teeth out with the Crankpully on 0 as you demonstrated). I haven't tried to turn it any futher as i thought i may cause some damage. The belt i removed was shredded by functioning as the guy from Orange auto salvage confirmed the car was running smooth etc... or should i turn the cam 8 teeth forwards to where it was? Thanks God Bless Brian.
Hey bud, Have you removed spark plugs to make it easy to turn by hand? Also try popping the the plastic over on that goes behind the bottom pulley to 100% confirm everything is still in alignment.
@@browndave3144 Hi thanks for getting back to me... i had all the plugs out and everything was aligned 100% then i installed the tensioners and belt.. but it wouldn't turn past around 80°. Im going to try again in abit... could anything be off or hitting etc? could the cam be out of alignment? I may have to take the rocker cover off and investigate but don't really want to as the engine was apparently running when removed with 70k... but the belt was half eaten so i dont know if that can mess up the rotation or cause any damage.
@@brianhuggins3367 sounds abit odd, when you turn in that 80⁰ and rotate back do all the mark return back to 0? Hopefully wont be a dude engine that's slipped on a part worn belt.
@@browndave3144 hi, yeah if i turn it back everything is still in alignment , but just doesn't go round any further. Dud engine after the guy stated the car was running before removed at 70k etc.. it did have 3months warranty but the time has past and now its in the car...I'll attack it again soon..how easy is it for the crank to be misaligned even though the belt never snapped but possibly skipped teeth due to damaged belt? What could be hitting or jamming it? Could the crank or cam be out or both?lol. Thanks for your help brudda.
@@brianhuggins3367 its quite common for these belts to slip, if you google it you'll see belts strip one side of there grooves along the lengths. So if it has could be a bent or broken valve. But that's worst case
Where did you buy the water pump? Cheers
Its an asin pump e.o. equivalent that came with the gates japan timing belt kit from japan :)
how did you order those parts from japan what site, jdm-planet?
Ebay just got to look for the right sellers
Did u order from jdm-planet?
How could i time the engine if the cambelt fell off? I took off the covers and made the mistake of not marking the timing before taking the belt off :(
Vlad Popa put the bottom half of the case on then slip the pulley onto the key way and match the mark up to the case. Then just make sure the cam pulley mark is at 12 matching the mark on the head (cam paint marks are from factory). Check my vid from 3mins should help if you can understand my mumbling 😂
Dave's VLOG thanks. will give it a go. Should i turn the crank without the belt on in case the lines of the pulleys do not match with the cam pulley?
Vlad Popa it depends how far out you are. If it's less than a 1/4 of an hour then you should be okay. Just take your time and if it locks up don't force it because it could be a valve hitting. Let know how you get on 👍
Dave's VLOG I appreciate the help and info. I think it's more than a quarter turn unfortunately. Im gonna have to play around with the cams and crank shaft till i find tdc on piston one again. Will definitely let you know how i get on. Hopefully i don't bend or brake any valves 🤞
Finished it yesterday evening. All well and sounds much nicer. Thanks for all the help.
Lexus is200se lovely motors
Couldn't agree more 👍
Seconded. 👍
if I come with my car where I can find you to change my belts thank you
Sorry bud I wouldn't change it for you but I can offer free advice if you do it yourself 👍🏿
How did you order the parts from Japan? thanks
I just searched ebay and confirmed with seller before ordering mate
