It would be hard to overstate the massive crossover popularity of N.W.A. during this era. Everyone was into this music, whether they were rap fans or not. Any serious retrospective of the music and culture of the late 80's - early 90's would include this. Phenomenal stuff, the soundtrack of my youth.

I'm a hardcore rocker and metalhead and can't stand the newer era of hip-hop music but these old masters of rap, I admire! They put efforts into the lyrics, and also musicality!
You should check out Kendrick Lamar if you fell that way, especially his verse on Nosetalgia or a lot of his albums.
