  • For some reason the MK3 Supra and the 1JZ are becoming a little more popular, so in this video Freddy shows you how much it will cost to do a basic 1JZ swap in a MK3 Supra, as well as how much he has invested into his entire project.

    I installed a 1jz in my 89 MK3 11 years ago and it's still my daily driver. That's how you get your money’s worth! 1k a year is a great price for an awesome sports car with no car payment and the cheapest insurance known to man. Been kicking everyone’s butt not to mention contending with crotch rockets. 60-120+ 5th gear pulls are just amazing. EVERY time I get out of my car I take 10 paces and catch myself looking back to admire how awesome it is. Freddy, keep this car forever or you will regret it.

      Correct and alot of people get depressed about a silly 10000 or 6000 they spend on a car like this but these cars last and can be passed onto generation to generation. That is why they are worth their weight in gold. If you think about that then yeah its the best bang for your buck your ever going to get. Compare that to paying 55000 thousand for a nice new vehicle today. I mean you will have to pay that off in 6 to 7 years and hope it last another 8 years if you got an ACURA or LEXUS but if you did not your F. that 50000 thousand goes down the drain. Never to be regained again. Then you say dude 12000 is nothing.

      I spent 5k on a true jza70 swap and I had a 91 which made everything pretty much a bolt in. Then I decided to do the 1.5 build before it even went in, that was another 2k in machine work parts etc. Then I decided to go single before I completed the swap. That was another 7K after custome ic pipes, went standalone, got injectors and clutch and custom exhaust. In short I spent a lot lol.

    Had an 87 and a 91 many yrs ago. Loved both of them. They were incredible drifting cars but both blew head gaskets - common problem with the inline 6. Wanted to find one with the swap but opted instead to go with a 1998 C5 Corvette and glad I did as the C5's are extremely well made cars (I had a C4 that was THE WORST car I ever owned). Even bone stock, a Mark 3 can be quirky and if you go with a swap, you really should do it yourself. That way you know it inside and out and can ensure it's done right, especially when it comes to wiring. You gotta be that passionate about it because it's a TON of work. If you're not in to tinkering, get a C5 Corvette - you won't be disappointed.

      Oveida Sinclair 7m’s are actually not half bad. They just get a bad rap because the factory never torqued them to the proper torque so they pop head gaskets if you don’t fix that. If you fix that, the motors are actually really stout and can make just as good horsepower as a 1/2j. But nobody would know bc everyone is in love with the jz series

    Dad did a 1JZ swap out, his throttle cable came from a 90's Corrola, he used a W58 tranny (car was a NA 7mge 5 speed), an SC300 Lexus dog bone, he didn't have to relocate his battery, he also used a single turbo VVTi 1JZ. Keep the Supra driveshaft, his swap out cost him around $5200.00, he keep the engine stock, 295 horse power was more than enough power for him.
    Dad made the car look as close to show room condition as he possibly could, no cracks on the dash and near perfect cloth seats. You will never get $13k of enjoyment out of the car and above all else, never look at that car as an investment. I drive the other Supra that he restored, it has a JDM 7mgte, Targa Top, that engine was tore down, head rebuilt, the block decked, multi layer metal head gasket with ARP head studs. It has a 3 inch down pipe and I think next year I'm going to get a header and a larger/faster spool up turbo, oh it has NO cracks on the dash, NO rust on the car and near perfect interior too.

    I am about to put a 1JZ in my Supra, I'm going to keep it stock duel turbo and I am going to hook it up to cars stock W58 transmission, plus living in Florida I plan on gutting the cat converter (no emissions inspection in this state). I have a beautiful conditioned 89 Supra with a near perfect interior, no cracks on the dash either. Oh dad went to the salvage yard about 5 years ago a pick up a 3 piece wig, the car looks beautiful, the only bad thing is the 7MGE engine is shot which is why I'm going to a 1JZ conversion. I'm keeping the W58 transmission because I don't plan on racing the car and it should hold up to the added 75 horse power, heck they were putting the W58's in the Mk IV's with the naturally aspired 2JZG engines in the mid 90's.

My 7M I got imported with 66k km on it so it should be good. I remember seeing the factory Toyota honing on the cylinder walls when I put a MLS head gasket and ARP’s. I have a custom $800 clutch setup from Southbend Clutch back in my hometown. I have all the Apexi controllers and aftermarket inter cooler and pipes and a huge borg Warner turbo off a diesel truck back in the day but she still screams and boost comes on around 3200rpm so not to bad lag. Currently high boost I have it at 28psi and have no idea the power numbers but I do know I am reaching my limits with the Lexus AFM and 660cc RC injectors mod. Cool video I’d wish you made more on the car being the mk3 Supras are making their come back.

    For this price you could import a JDM Mk. III. The car itself in the JDM market is going for between $1000 and $5000. FOB / FOC is around $1200. Hiring a licensed Customs Broker is a couple hundred and fees are probably a couple hundred more. That's a solid $5000 - $8000 for a RHD 1JZGTE Mk. III. You get a factory install AND the prestige / cool factor of a true JDM Legend. Keep in mind many times these cars have already been modded as well, typically with extremely rare Momo or Motegi steering wheels, Ricaro seats, and any number of valuable Japan only rims, such as RS Watanabe's, Fukokas, or rare Volk wheels. Many times they'll be fairly built as well.
    All in all it's a better deal to import a Mk. III from Japan. You'll most likely find that the mods on them are worth more in parts than the car and process.

    • @PoorManMods
      @PoorManMods  Před 4 lety +1

      Its easier to spend that much money ovet many years building a car than dropping it all at once

    • @vroomoon
      @vroomoon Před 4 lety

      @@PoorManMods True, but if you save up and go for this route you'll have a RHD version. Also the amount of money you'd spend stateside for those kinds of parts usually already on these cars is VASTLY more than what you see here. Keep in mind that a good set of true JDM rims can be north of 4K a set. Actual older Ricaros can range from a couple hundred to a couple thousand, and an old school JDM racing wheel can be a couple hundred, if not up to north of a thousand. Let's not even talk about suspension or engine mods. Availability is also a thing. Some of these JDM cars will have golden era aero kits (like Top Secret, Advan, and others) that you just can't get in the western hemisphere or outside of Japan period. All the little things are what add up to having a much better value than building up a USDM car for a similar price. JDM cars are also worth vastly more in the US than in Japan, regardless of the car. The mere fact thst such a thing exists through the effort needed to import boosts the value exponentially. That's why importers exist in the first place. If it wasn't massively profitable they wouldn't do it other than for personal use.

My dad and I both have MK III Supra's, dad has a 7mgte and I have the 7mge, personally I don't like the 7m engine at all, dad had to completely rebuild his 7mgte and he wishes he put a 2JZ in it instead.
