  • Today was the 50th Anniversary of the devastating land slide that occurred at the small Welsh Valley community of Aberfan on the 21st October 1966. A coal tip slid down a mountain side and covered Pantglas school, where 116 children lost their lives along with 28 Adults from this small Village. The Memorial Garden was built on the site of the old Pantglas Junior School.
HRH Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales attended to pay his respects on this sad day. He spent a great deal of time, talking to local residents, which was greatly appreciated by all. He then attended a reception in the Community Hall and earlier attended the Cemetery where those who lost their lives, now rest in peace.

A wonderful an fitting tribute to those who were taken on that fateful day 50 years ago Bob. I was 19 years of age but was at an age where I was unable to fully express my feelings. Through many tragic mine losses in Ayrshire, I can now appreciate the brief felt by those folks so many years ago. May God grant the survivors the peace and rest in Him to finally put to rest the turmoil of the past. Thanks Bob for a wonderful video! With best wishes as always. Ken

Many from America are just learning about this devastation because of Season 3 of The Crown on Netflix. I was 5 in 1966, and I have older siblings. If we had by chance been born Welsh, we were right in the age group of the victims. God bless this beautiful community. God brings good from evil.

Hi Bob, what a wonderful tribute to Aberfan. I am planning to do the very same in a few weeks. Great minds hey! But am planning a series of Photos on a dull grey day just like 50 years ago. I was in an English lesson in school when this tragedy occurred. I will always remember where I was when it happened.
I last visited Aberfan memorial garden 20 years ago when I was working in the village.
    Thanks for sharing,

So pleased you covered this Bob. It was one of those horrific events that stays in the mind through life and probably one of the first disasters that unfolded on TV. There's a very good piece on the BBC website about the events of that sad day which I was reading earlier. How scandalous it was that the NCB wanted money from the disaster fund to remove the remaining tips. You can't quite comprehend how a whole generation of children was lost in moments and had warnings been acted upon earlier it needn't have happened

The facts are, the miners were scared to kick up a fuss about the tips, as that would put their employment at risk, the pit would close as unviable, its a cheap way to just put waste on the hillside close the the colliery. The tip was built up on a spring that everyone knew was there. That is criminal negligence Nothing to do with the masons, just poor planning, poor NCB management and safety concerns ignored. Its ironic that the industry that made the towns and created employment, killed a generation of younsters. Its so sad.
