*Major Breaking News:* Cab Car 501 has just returned to revenue service.

These Cabs are the absolute best it ever gets. Every single one of them has an incredible horn, and they all tell a sort of story, and aesthetically, no two are 100% alike. I wish that instead of having bought the Ugly Rotem cars, they had simply bought newer Bombardiers, with equally amazing later-model K5LAs (like GO Transit 242 through 250). Nowadays, 501 through 506, being UTDC Cars rather than Bombardier Cars, are actually the only Pre-Bombardier Cabs left, with all of GO Transit and TRE's such Cab Cars now long-dead.
501 - The head of the fleet has always had something going for it. In 1999, it was experimentally painted into a hypothetical scheme called the "Arrows" livery, but they discarded it. Later on, after losing its Strobelight above the horn, they still kept the post intact. And on top of all that, it has an absolutely GODLY K5LA, even better than GO Transit 215, my Top Favorite Cab from there. I really hope it comes back to service soon. I've heard rumors coming in two directions. One legend has it that we will see it again once the Downtown Miami Extension begins, although a more recent rumor I was told suggests that it is being scrapped for parts, like 814 is. I pray the latter isn't true.
502 - A little weary, but no less amazing. It has a very unique, low pitch K5LA that almost sounds like one you would hear off of a usual GO Transit unit. It has also now been given a Black E-Bell, much like SunRail 2009 or Caltrain 119.
503 - In recent times, this unit has had one thing going for it. It's DIRTY!!! But even then, its excellent K5LA still sparkles. This unit has rarely operated though, having last been seen active in December last year. They've really only been using it as a sort of Backup Cab. Hopefully when the Coastal Link takes effect, it starts to see more regular use.
504 - My Least Favorite. Its K5LA is unfortunately rather fouled and sounds quite messed up. It's still 100 times better than any Rotem Cab, but the other UTDCs and Bombardiers leave it in the dust. But i'm still glad that just this month, it finally came back to leading trains for the first time since 2016. It also now has another Black E-Bell.
505 - This unit seemingly has the most story to it. Back in the old days, this unit was always that dirty junk unit that rarely took the point and almost looked as if it would be the first to retire. But then, in 2014, it was rebuilt, and it never looked so great. The best part was, its K5LA only got better and better. It sounds especially great here in this video.
506 - This unit stands out quite well to me for being the most modernized of the fleet, being the only UTDC with New Number Boards on both sides, being quite clean like 505 and 508 nowadays, and it also recently received new LED Marker Lights. It also has one of the most interesting K5LAs, seemingly only playing one note, even though it isn't.
507 - Nothing beats Rudolph the Red-K5LA'd Reindeer. I have been listening to horns of all kinds from all different eras for almost 19 years, and I am still yet to find a horn I like better than the Red-Throated K5LA of TRCX 507. It's seriously the greatest thing to ever play to my ears. Its history is equally breathtaking. Back in 2001, it was actually the very first piece of Tri-Rail equipment to ever be repainted into the present scheme. In 2013, it was nearly scrapped after being seriously burned up in a collision, but it amazingly survived, although it lost its "Red Button" over its upper headlight (although that doesn't matter, because that makes my HO Scale Model of it more accurate to the real one). It even has a bent Right Strobelight Post, a burned out Left Number Board, and like 503, is one of the dirtiest of the fleet, but shrugs it off like its nothing. Flamin' Five O' Seven The Failure-Free Fury is tough nuts, and I appreciate it even more for that.
508 - The shiniest, cleanest unit of the whole fleet. You can instantly spot it without even having to read the number. I was quite happy when it finally came back in October last year. Its K5LA isn't as great as most of the others, but it's still fine.
509 - I've always seen this one as the one that's just always been there. Its main point of interest is the slightly different number font it has on the sides. Sadly, this unit was in a bad crash in October last year, and has since been sidelined. Hopefully it comes back soon.
510 - One of the real better K5LAs, missing the Reflectors Strips on the front-end door, and being the last Bombardier Cab with both original Number Boards left made it stand out, but sadly, it was all ended at the beginning of 2016 when it was wrecked full-on, damaged beyond repair, and tragically scrapped. Hopefully it's now serving Heaven's Commuter Rail just as well as it served Tri-Rail.
511 - Back in the day, it was the very first unit to ever receive a New Number Board. It also lost its Double Strobelights, which all the other Bombardier Cabs have. It sounds kinda fouled here, but it sounded better after the Chord was eliminated.
If I had to rank them all from best to worst:
    1. 507
    2. 501
    3. 505
    4. 506
    5. 510
    6. 503
    7. 502
    8. 509
    9. 511

    11. 504

I wish I didn't live in the quiet zone of Tri-Rail. I've always LOVED these horns, but sadly I cannot listen to them in real life because my schedule just doesn't fit for full-on "railfanning", however since I do take the train to and from school, I have been able to of course seen them every day. But as I said... it's all in the quiet zone, and as such, they don't blow 'em up here :/
Of course every now and again they'll do a quick double blast leaving stations, but that's about it. Nothing long and hard up here. I'm so jealous.
Also, I don't know why but I actually like the Rotems. Obviously, me actually riding the trains daily means I take the fact the Rotems being newer (not just service time but newer models in general), they are in general cleaner on the inside, as well as being more comfortable IMO. But I do actually like the horns they have, dunno why. Would still prefer the K5LA, though.
And of course, by taking it to school daily, I'm talking pre-COVID.

It could be worse. You could be where I am. Here, the UTA FrontRunner is absolutely 100% Quiet Zone. You're extremely lucky if you can get merely one toot.
I can't make an info list like that of all the FrontRunner Cab Cars, because we can't get horn samples of them all. Not to mention, a few of them, like 107 and 116, literally NEVER head trains. It is virtually impossible to make a video like this of all of them.

I mean yeah, that honestly is how it is up here. The only sounds I could ever think about hearing are the sort double blast of leaving the station, and even that’s not common. Though, I’ve mostly noticed it’s the Brookville’s that will leave the station with a double blast. But oh boy do I mean it when they abide by the quiet zone. It’s not just maybe a few blasts when approaching a crossing, to at least alert of its presence or anything, but I mean DEAD silent.

    • @Ilikeminecraft57
      @Ilikeminecraft57 Před 4 lety +1

It especially scares me because of how Amtrak is also similar that it abides by the quiet zone carefully, and not to mention it doesn’t stop at much of the stations up here, just WPB. And about a year ago, a pedestrian was hit and killed by an Amtrak at LAK crossing, and I think because of the fact it’s mere yards from the station, I’m sure no one was expecting a 79* MPH train blasting by, they probably assumed it would be slow because of the station’s close proximity, “surely it stops here”. Still stupid if you think you can EVER beat a train. You CAN’T.

You got some nice catches there! It's always been a pleasure to hear these amazing cabcar K5LAs in my 13 years of South Florida railfanning. Music to the ears!
As for the cabcars, I'm giving my input on the horns only.
501-506 - Likely Late 80s Wide Font, Tagless.
501 - Definitely the most unique of the bunch. Has a nice quill to it and the tuning is quite good. The highest note is also quite sharp, giving it its own character.
502 - A bit worn and the tuning is fair but has plenty of volume and sounds bright. Second note a bit sharp.
503 - The tuning sounds nice, but the air pressure is a bit low in my opinion and lost a bit of its volume since the cord removal. This one had a lot more volume back when it had the pull cord. The highest note is also a hair flat, which gives it character.
504 - Actually isn't too bad. Sure, it has a bad quill, and it is a bit worn, but at full blast it sounds quite good. Rode it once and at full blast it sounded just like 501 as the highest note is also quite sharp. I should give it a proper catch in the near future just to see what its volume is like.
505 - A major improvement from back in the day! Probably has the most volume out of all of them and the tuning is amazing. Definitely up there with 507!
506 - While not bad by any means, it is a bit worn. Tuning is fair but could benefit from a cleaning. Still miles better than a Rotem.
507-511 - Likely Mid 90s Narrow Font, Tagless
507 - Perfect volume, practically perfect tuning! Kept its tuning and volume after the cord removal. Lowest and highest notes both stand out in the chord; probably why it sounds so good. Car survived quite a couple of scrapes but is, hands-down, best of the bunch!
508 - Also sounds quite good and has a nice quill. Special to me since I was actually allowed to pull the cord when I was little.
509 - Had great tuning and plenty of volume!
510 - Its tuning was quite good, and had a decent quill and volume. Shame it had to be wrecked.
511 - Still sounds pretty good, but after the cord removal it gained quite a lot of volume and its sound became a lot brighter.
