I've never seen a video from a real estate agent that was as real and honest as this one...Mahalo.
The production quality of these are simply 2nd to none. Well done and keep them coming.
Beautifully done Mai. Your professionalism and love for what you do is so apparent. I’m not crying 😭
Thank youuuuuu. I learn from you!
I grew up down there and have attended school, lived and worked at several places on the continent. Some of the nicest people and families that I am still close to are from that Coastline. Mahalo for being upfront and honest. The price for living in paradise is multi-faceted, the solution is multi-pronged but the spirit of the land, its surroundings and the people there are what makes that entire area a special place.
Maila, Thank you very much for this video. My condolences on the loss of your brother. You dug deep in this video and it really shows the reality of Hawaii. Mahalo!
Decades ago my GTO got stuck in the sand at the end of the road at Yoks. Three big kanakas lifted the back end up onto wood/sticks/rubbish for traction. Made it off the sand, mahalos. Haole friend almost s… himself when they approached my car while I was getting stuff for traction. We all hung there the rest of the day, chillin. Waves, sunset, beers…….
yessah
Watching from Walla Walla, Washington, born and raised in Waianae and moved away in 2011, always have love for my hometown though, even with its flaws, no other place like it
I was raised in Makaha/Waianae High c/o 1983. Live in Tricities,Wa. Since 1986.” Went to 40th class reunion in Waianae and was amazing to be back.
Bay Area of California here. Places with a bad reputation tend to be hidden gems, and that bad press keeps the AirBnB investors away. 🎉😂
May the memory of your brother be a blessing to all who knew him.
I have no plans on moving to Hawaii or seeking a rental but I still enjoy watching every one of your videos. I’ve been to Oahu a few times and it holds a special place in my heart. Thank you for sharing your personal story. Sending you love.
I am watching from Arizona. I adore Hawaii and visit as often as I can. I love looking at and learning about new places in Hawaii, that I may be able to visit in the future. It would be a dream to retire in Hawaii, I’m still working on my husband in that regard, lol. My son is living in Japan right now with his wife who is from there, so I would be that much closer to him too. Thank you for sharing this part of Hawaii and your very personal connections to it. Sadly, I don’t think there is a state in our country that doesn’t share in those same issues. I wish we had solutions and answers for how to best help the homeless and addicted, and we should keep talking about it and not act like it doesn’t exist.
I live in DC Baltimore area and been to Hawaii many times came there as a musician and the first time I was there I came in on leave when I was in the Air Force I am Black Love my times in Hawaii Blessings to you very sorry about your brother. Much love to you❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍🏾 I enjoy your videos very much on real estate in Hawaii
Mahalo for mentioning Hanaras , I was raised on this kind of food and cooking , I ate here a lot and I still eat here at least. 3-4 times a week .
Aloha, and much Mahalo's for your honesty reporting on Hawaii real estate and living.
I haven't watched all of your videos but the one's that I did watch you miss out on one huge topic, " HOA FEES " !!!! THIS CAN MAKE OR BREAK ANY CHANCE OF HOME OWNERSHIP IN HAWAII. Please include this in your content , because many first time owners may not realize .
Watching from Dallas, TX! Love it here but I miss my Waianae! I hope one day to move back!
my profile pic is of me at the kula'ila'i rock xD. the crazy thing is waianae is considered the hood lmao. i was like are yall serious? i thought i was in paradise.
Appreciate you acknowledging homelessness. My son is homeless in Waikiki and it’s definitely a constant concern for me. I lived Kailua for 40 years but there’s just something so raw about Waianae/Makaha. I like the heat, the mtns, and the deep blue ocean. Surf!
How wonderful is your video! Thank you for sharing such a sad thing about your life and how this is a sad reality sometimes in Hawaii. You're wonderful thanks so much.
Good job in narrating an honest video about the west side.
I remember when homes in Sea Country was first built, and I thought the prices were ridiculous. Now it's doubled. While I love the Waianae Coast area, Yoks especially, I will never buy a home in Hawaii. After 60 years of working and living in Hawaii, I am moving on to not so greener pastures, but at least I could afford them. Another CZcamsr, made his home in Texas and dropped new roots there, Hawaiian style. I'll probably do the same. Great take on Waianae and I hope it gets better there, homelessness sucks there.
Love my hometown ❤ hopefully one day my husband and I can purchase our first home.
Thank you for sharing this piece of your life with us ❤ much alive ! As always great video ❤
I'm in Chicago but did live in Kaneohe for 3years. Love watching your videos to see what's happening in Hawaii.
Maila, incredible video as always ! You are an amazing woman and your composure talking about your brother was incredible. Talking about loss is never easy.
Loved all the video, and as always we look forward to your next ! They just keep getting better 🥰 Sending all our love and have an a great weekend ❤ Alli & Brodie
Great job, Maila and co.!
Awesome job covering Waianae! So on point! I live in Waialua but have been there a handful of times and never had a problem. Your video was surprisingly touching. You are such a good person. God bless you. I wouldn’t have issues with buying there but it’s just too far from work! Right now I have a ten minute commute!
Awesome Mai beautiful representation 🙏🏽❤️
I've always enjoyed the homes you showcase. Condolences to your family. I'm watching from Southern California (San Diego).
Watching from Frederick, Maryland. I was in Oahu while I was in the Navy. Plan on going back to the island of Oahu permanently when I retire in about 4-5 years. Just getting an early start on what to expect. Love the information you provide
I do plan to move back to the islands one day soon , i hope you keep all of us informed with all of the pros and cons of Hawaii living to help us all make a up to date informed decision .
Once again Much Mahalo's for your great content 🤙
Hi! I'm from the San Francisco bay area and love Oahu! I enjoy your videos.
Condolences and sorry for your loss.
Watching from Makaha.
God Bless.
I am Dutch (Netherlands) , my youngest sister is married to a Hawaiian guy and they live in Waimanolo ( if I write that right), not too far from the Obama residence (Magnum PI in the past), in her opinion Wainae is not the best part of Oahu. There is a reason why houses are cheaper over there... Don't know, been twice on Oahu. But it is a 24 hrs travel from Amsterdam. It is a pleasure to watch your vids. A good saleswoman indeed.
Lots of break in while you gone from your home
Such great local knowledge of the area covered in this video.Very informative, funny, not so gross lol and heartfelt content…Aloha from Cali 🤙🏽
Greetings from San Francisco! Love watching your videos.
Great video. Sorry for your loss of your Brother.
Watching in San Diego. Great you tubes.
Hi Maila…I live in Las Vegas and watch your videos on You Tube, and enjoy watching them. I grew up in Waianae, specifically Makaha Valley….My grandparents purchased an acre and a half in Makaha for a little less than $2,000 back in the day….bygone days for sure…..
Hi I’ve watch you guys since I visited in 2017 we were on a make a wish trip for our son and I fell in love with the island . One day I hope I can retire there . I enjoy your video very informative thank you for that. We live in Cleveland Tennessee.
Watching from San Diego, looking to move to Oahu
Watching this from Toronto, Canada. First time visited Hawaii (lived for 4 months) 14 years ago in my early 20s and came back for vacation last year. Hawaii have changed. Some of the new developments - like Kakaako - didn't exist then. I remember you could see a bit of a homelessness here and there, including Waikiki area. Now - driven around the whole island - it is only noticeable on the west coast. Which is SO incredibly beautiful. Waikiki (and the whole strip from airport on) became a lot more fancier and significantly invested in. And definitely more expensive. But still totally worth every penny in my opinion. Sorry about your brother. Thank you for sharing. Love your videos! ❤
Awesome video Maila
Watching from Washington State. I've lived in kailua before and was always told to avoid the east side because the natives do not like hoeles
Met a native Hawaiian in Cambodia. He was so full of hate.
Greetings from Savannah! Many visits to Oahu to visit family and eventually plan to return 😊
Watching from Fresno, CA. Grew up in Ewa Beach back in the 60's abd 70's. Back then, we tried to stay away from the Waianae area.
Thanks for the video, I am from Toronto, Canada 😊
Watching from San Jose, CA. Long time guest of your beautiful island. Hope to get back next year.
Watching from Makaha Valley ✨
Awesome 👏 video 💥👌
From Stowe, Vermont. Please keep up the great work
God bless your brothers legacy. Lost my closest friends in Kauai, one to the ocean and another to taking his own life. Tragedy strikes quick. Good video. Went to Ko Olina as a kid and wanted to see whats up with Iz's coast he was raised on
In SW Florida but have a condo in Makaha Valley towers.....love it there.....real people thank God....real people
I’m in Burlington, Vermont. I love Hawaii. I’ve visited a couple of times over the years. Once to the Big Island and once to Oahu.
Maila.....lemme try to hit everything before I forget lol. First off, I'm so sorry to hear about your brother/Koa's uncle. My heart goes out to you guys on that and having been thru something similar with a sibling, I know it can be painful to discuss. I appreciate you opening up on the area and including him in the story. Love your grace, professionalism and humility.
Never been to Waianae or even thought about it as a place to live. The views were gorgeous and I'm thankful for the learning experience you gave me. As much as I come out there, there's always something new to see, learn or find out about. Looking at ya from the DC area (Northern VA) and loving your content (as usual). Sending love and aloha!
Watching from Seattle, but born and raised from Wahiawa. Also lived Vegas for 18 years.
Watching from NYC! Originally from Kalihi Valley but dreaming to move back within a couple years. Enjoy your videos! Mahalo
Aww we love knowing that local people enjoy our content. Thank you
Watching from Alaska… love visiting Oahu Hawaii, but still like the snow here, haha. But, great content!
Aloha! I am watching from NY but I lived in Ewa for 2 years and worked at Waianae Elementary school as a teacher during those two years! I loved Hawaii and miss it, so I like to watch your videos. I dream of winning the lottery and buying a house there when I retire from living in NY. Or, maybe a tiny condo if I never win the lottery. 😂
Watching from NYC 🙏🏽👍🏽
I am sorry for your lost. Live in Kapolei I would love a condo off the beach in Makaha. I love the pounding waves there😊
🌺 Aloha Malia, Job well done! 🤙🏽 🌊🏄🏽♀️
Chico, Ca. I have family on Oahu and Big Island. I was told to avoid any town that starts with a W. I'm ok with that. Give the Locals some space
Watching from Texarkana AR
Invest Waianae but be respectful. Traffic and houselessness is everywhere on the island. Pockets of million dollar homes are beeing built next to vacant or boarded up lots - someone knows something. Anyone familiar with mainland old popular hoods, and how let's say Inglewood, CA or Southeast, DC looks like today... is it just me or does it seem that change starts with either the community allowing a road, bridge, stadium, casino or Amazon? Give Waianae time.
Look there's are two Starbucks 😮
Probably a tough but genuine video to make I'm sure - thank you all for sharing.
sorry for your loss
Aloha from Brisbane, Australia
So sorry to hear about your brother! RIP
Hello from Chicago,Illinois
Akua bless u !!
Aloha, I grew up on the Wai’anae Coast and lived there for over 60 years, I love it there and it will always be home and actually was one of the first buyers in Sea Country. I moved to Thailand 4 years ago, primarily because of the cost of healthcare in the US regardless of where you live. I recognize that I am growing older and although in good general health now, understand that it will change as none of us live forever. There is a very high level of healthcare here in Thailand that is affordable. I would love to move back to Wai’anae but do not see that the cost of health care will change anytime soon
watching from Mililani
My condolences. ❤❤❤
I used to live in all those areas for 20 years.
Sorry for what happened to your brother. We saw the house less issue there. It’s still a beautiful place. Mahalo and aloha to you.
i'm a native hawaiian, living in wahiawa. an ACTUAL native not 1/3rd portugese, 1/3rd filipino and 1/3rd whatever else. we have not had good things happen while at the pokai bay fishing tournament (things stolen), yokohama bay (fights with the non hawaiian locals), or even the subway behind the gas station (attempted car break in).
as a result, i approach waianae - if i must because i mostly avoid it - with caution. and frangible ammo.
I'm sad to hear about your half brother. Take care and Stay strong.
Aloha from Alabama
I have a place in Hawaii (happens to be in Maui), and I am live in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Reno Nevada and looking were to settle down.
if you from Chicago or California or Newyork shit whole places Waianae is perfect for you
Here in Reno Nevada last year 138 homeless people died on the street. Just like you said it's real and everywhere.
I moved from my home of waianae 5yrs ago to Washington state but i do plan on moving back home i just dont know where
Aloha no Wai'anae, I miss you my home.
Arizona
Professionally created videos. Watching from Canada and yes, I accidentally thought your name was Malia instead of Maila. Sorry.
Watching from Maryland, looking for that perfect vacation property(people can dream). Love your videos, they are so informative. Got about half way thru this one and knew all I needed to.
❤️
Oh heyyyyyyyyyyyy watching from the 9th Island….. 🛑 ✋🏽 I mean Vegas (bad, Kanoe, it is NOT the 9th Island 🤪). I might move back one day. Oh and Maila not Malia (and not Kanoe) is my sister!!!!! Woooooooo!!!!
We look forward to your generation donation$
😂
Smiling "Hey Alooohaaaa" in a restaurant = Punched in the face. That should tell you all you need to know lol. Sis got good treatment because she's local. All Samantha's stay away 🤣🤣🤣
🙏🏽🌹
Lived there in Waianae - beachfront on Moua St. for little over three years. Didn't have any problems with anyone really. I'm white, 60+, but it didn't seem to make much difference. Lots of theft in the area and has its share of poverty and yes, homelessness. We're back in California since 1 April 2000, so maybe some things have changed? Overall, people are nice there, but most live life a bit differently than the highly educated east-end types. Perhaps my 20+ years in the army, dealing with all kinds of people conditioned me to easily adapting?
Bottom line - yes, Waianae has a reputation, but it's a bit exaggerated in my opinion.
Really appreciate the anecdotal experience. Great feedback
Hada good pounding 😂😂😂😂😂
I currently live in Oahu… really do appreciate your videos! It’s true no one ever wants to live in this part of the island or even consider buying to rent out as an investment property. Lots of inventory for a reason! Simply and honestly it’s the most dangerous places to live on this island! They will all let you know that you just don’t belong! Think very hard and do your homework before buying on this side of the island!
I currently rent in Moiliili, (but own a 1 br in Ewa Beach. lived in Maili (Coral Sands) from 63-69 when it was a new neighborhood and the Pillbox was not a thing. I could leave my bike on the street over night no problem, (first week moving to Waipahhu, the same bike stolen from our garage). It may be different now. The mountain was across the street and the beach was two blocks away. Great place to grow up as a child. This was before the Freeway was built, (Farrington Hwy was one lane each way). Poor mom and dad.
So sorry about your loss. The homeless are everywhere, where I live, (near Iolani school), Ala Moana Beach, (viewed from the Ward Restrauants) even the elite Kakaako. My office did Park Lane, (they over look Ala Moana Beach Park and the homeless tents.
Thank you so much for your story, really appreciate this feedback.
@@dwellhawaii You are very welcome! I didn't realize you had ties with the Westside. I left in 69, but rI still feel close to the friends I made in the 6th grade. I miss watching you perform with Ben, or with Hoookena, (you even performed at my church). You are so successful in all that you do (music, and fitness also, etc. Good luck in your new venture!
Hi Michael. Do you have any tips for someone who wants to rent a place in that area but right now lives on the mainland? I’m a single woman and I want to move there, but I don’t know how to start. How to secure a place before moving there? I work from home by the way.
I’m not on instagram. Is there any other way that I can reach out to you?
How is it that every place you profile is the most beautiful place on Earth?
Northern New England. Very informative video. Thanks!
ETA: So sorry about your brother. Few of us are untouched by drug and alcohol addiction and all that comes with it. 🙏
I'm sure they look even more beautiful in the New England winter!
1st!!!
🏆
Winters California
Live in Waianae. Not originally from here but find most of the locals to be nice. Noticed that you did not show all the vagrant encampments along the beaches, just Makaha Beach which has none. Also little or no mention of the bad element in Waianae and the recent shootings/murders. And not a place to raise a family as the schools are dismal especially if you are not a ‘local’. Actually not even good for locals as a friend’s son has suffered being bullied. That place she showed as 13:37 had been sitting uncompleted for about 9 years and was just completed a few months ago.
Ku La Ila I 🫵😊
Why this kine jeans?
Everything else exceptional.
I agree! Not flattering at all. 😂🫣
