  • "Island in the Sun" · Leon & Mary Russell - Make Love To The Music - 1977 - Isolated Drums by Gary Ogan & Leon Russell
Gary Ogan plays drums from the beginning of the song until 1:49.
Leon Russell begins playing drums at 4:20.
Leon did not credit himself for his drumming.

This is what Gary Ogan said about this song:
"The first order of business was to produce a follow-up to The Wedding Album. Leon had a few songs already written, but one exercise he introduced and we did together most days was sitting at typewriters and typing 30 minutes of stream-of-consciousness prose, after which the writing would be put away without looking at it. Later, we would review the work to see if any musical ideas might be lurking. This is how the two songs we co-wrote for the Make Love To The Music album were written. "Now Now Boogie" and "Say You Will" both happened to be Leon's lyrics, and the music I came up with virtually wrote itself. Of course, I was delighted when "Say You Will" became the second single off the album and was eventually covered by two other Warner Brothers artists, Nicolette Larson and Maria Muldaur. Leon also had an idea for a more epic piece that would take more work, maybe have different mood changes, and maybe need to be edited together. We discussed the idea at length, as he had some trepidation about writing and recording such an ambitious piece. With encouragement though, he went for it, and "Islands In The Sun" became the last song on Side Two, a production and song I'm particularly fond of having co-produced. We needed drums on the gospel rave-up ending and fade-out of the song, and since I had played drums on several other tracks already, it was decided I'd have a go at it. A simple boom-chuck gospel feel was all that was required. Piece o' cake, I thought. I laid the drums down, and Leon immediately thought they sounded too slick, something I thought I had tried to avoid. Nonetheless, he said he would put the drums on himself, which he did and nailed in a single take. At the time, I didn't think to follow him out to the drum booth to watch him. I had never heard or seen him play drums before, but he totally rocked the kit and captured the perfect funky church vibe he was looking for. So it's one regret I have -- of not taking that opportunity to watch him play drums on that song."

Actually Leon played drums on this one. ... I tried but he thought it was too slick. What we hear at the end of this tune was Leon laying down the perfect funky gospel drum bit - in one take - I only regret I didn't watch him do it. ... As it is I never saw him play drums.

By the way, Gary, William Sargent, author of "Superstar in a Masqueade" mentions you nine times in his book.
He has a CZcams channel with the same name with lots of rare songs done by Leon Russell, JJ Cale and David Gates.

Regarding all drums & percussion that appear in this song up to the 4:20 mark, there are no drums. There are only multiple gourds that Leon also played (most of his recordings around this time had multiple gourds recorded at different speeds, and he always played them himself. ... Sooo Leon played all drums & percussion on this song. And come to think of it, I don't think I played or sang on this song at all. ... which is funny given it's the one song you decided I should get some extra credit for, HA! ... Still, it's fun to hear this as an istrumental. BTW, how did you pull off ditching all the vocals!?!?

      Hi Gary:
Thank you very much for clarifying that it is Leon on percussion (gourds) and drums on this song.
Somehow, I assumed it was you up to the 4:20 mark.
I removed the vocals with an artificial intelligence (AI) program called lalal.ai.
There are a few Leon songs on this CZcams channel that I have isolated the vocals or piano.
Do you have any songs in mind that you would like me to do this to for you?

I am trying to find a copy of Tenley Holway's "All the Way" album, but I'm having no luck.
I'd love to hear her work, as well as hear Leon on the tracks that he played on.
Do you have any idea where I could find it?
