Honestly I feel Hikaru is the biggest supporter for Levy becoming a GM. He acts like a cold shower teacher, putting reality front and center, but always is giving him lessons in how to become better, and even goes as far as playing bad openings like this to give Levy a chance and see how well he does.
I don't think he used a bad opening to give Levy a chance. He uses bad openings like that all the time against multiple people, he even did that in... I think the speed chess championship? He played basically the alphabet against top level competitors and made it to the grand finals against Magnus, whom he started playing more real openings against. He likely plays those bad openings to get up on time because he values the time more than the opening advantage against a lower rated player.
@@MistaOppritunityno, it's not to gain or give advantages. it's simply because it's easier to leave openings theory if you play a bad opening because playing a very theoretical game would most likely lead to a drawn endgame, and you wouldn't want that to happen specially if you would lose 3-10 points just by drawing your opponent.
@@MistaOppritunity Yeah true, a better example as he said was Queen take Pawn early on which wasn't ideal. That Speed Chess Championship though was legendary, I watched that live and just laughed, all his opponents were sweating and giving their best, meanwhile Hikaru was trying to remember what was the last Pawn he opened with.
@@idk-fe1fj Bingo. Hikaru does this all the time. The goal is to get out of theory as early as possible, and have the player play their own moves from something like move 5 instead of move 20. When you are a higher rated player you want the chess instincts and skill to come into play, not just memorization of stockfish lines and positions they have been in hundreds of times

Such a great video. It is amazing to see the difference in how you think compared to levy compared to myself having less than 1000 Elo in blitz. The whole delayed development idea, pushing forward with initiative instead.
