  • Viroqua, Wisconsin is home to many historic buildings and landmarks. This week enjoy some of the local sights and scenery of downtown Viroqua. I would like to come back soon and visit the local museum, as well as create a more in depth video talking about the buildings. Next week we head to the Viroqua Pioneer Cemetary and the city of Westby, Wisconsin!

What’s your favorite place to visit in Viroqua?

Thank you for this video - a definite sweet spot in my day! I was born on the east coast and lived in Viroqua for about 6 years (1974-1980) and even though I've been gone 40 years, I still think of Viroqua as home.

What a cute little town! Love the music too. Can't wait for the graveyard tour, those are the best! 🖤

The graveyard tour is going to be short this time. I'm waiting for a response from the Viroqua historic society, to see if we can get a local historian to help make a more in-depth video of the area.

I loved growing up in Viroqua in the 70s. Lots of great family friends and you know, everything in the 70s was kinda grungy I think, we were just unaware. Disco, Star Wars, learning to ride my bike on West Broadway. Swimming all day at the pool for 15¢! Fishing with Dad at Sidee Hollow. My old elementary school looks like it should probably be razed to the ground, was once a perfectly good school that in fact produced a United States Astronaut and now looks like a hobo instructional facility. I will say that a recent visit to the Co+op grocery was very impressive, I'd definitely shop there if I lived in town.

Was there a hippie presence in the 70s? I'm wondering how far the progressive streak goes back.

I wish the musicians were attributed. This song is by The Hunts. called Heaven Knows. love it! Thanks for the video

I paid for the licensing, so it wasn’t necessary. Also I extended the track a bit by combining the instrumental track with the original.

So that tobacco wear house most likely stored tobacco that my grandfather and possibly my great grandfather farmed as they were both tobacco farmers in Viroqua Wisconsin

I remember going to the annual Tobacco Expo when I was a child (in the 70's) at this warehouse. Wasn't long after that we stopped harvesting tobacco, along with many others in WI.

My wife and I stayed in an Airbnb cabin for a couple days just outside Viroqua and had a great time. There are some great shops downtown as well as good places to eat and have a beverage or two. I think the downtown area could really be improved by somehow rerouting the heavy truck traffic and traffic in general in a different way. Moving around downtown is hectic if needing to cross from one side of the street to another. It is simply not pedestrian friendly. Even when using the pedestrian buttons to get the “walk now” light, you need to basically dash across the street to beat the “stop walking” light.
Just from a business perspective, a downtown community redesign should be looked at. We live in downtown Cedar Falls, Iowa which has a parkade design that still allows slowed down traffic yet promotes shopping and entertainment. On a nice day, there are people walking up and down and in and out of the shops here.

Yah I agree those crosswalks are fast haha.
When did you all come visit?
I’ve been seeing a ton of new businesses popping up (as they tend to when the weather gets warm)

Given the reputation Viroqua seems to enjoy as one of the few progressive small towns in the Midwest here in Chicago, I'm surprised how drab and "normal Midwestern town" its appearance is. Sure, there are a few cool buildings, but man... I know it's poor, so that may have something to do with it. I'd think people would be flocking there with the advent of remote work.

I left Orlando to come here. I love the slow pace. Makes me so happy to be here.
