Kim Hyung Duk escaped from North Korea at the age of 20, his body covered with torture scars from North Korean police. But once in the south he found the alien culture and indifference of the authorities too much to bear. He was caught at the port of Ulsan stowed away on a ship bound for China, trying to go home. Defectors such as the Cho family enjoy luxuries unheard of in the north yet are regarded with suspicion by neighbours for the support they receive from the government. Others such as Kim Young Seh hold a burden of guilt. The wife he left behind in the north was forced to marry someone else. Unusually, Dr Lee Keum admits publicly that the government is not as keen on reunification as it once was. However, South Koreans are becoming less eager to take on the burden of their northern neighbours.

Then they risked their lives to come somewhere seeking freedom and it isn't what they thought it would be. It's a shock. I'm hoping they have put programs in place now to help defectors adjust to the changes of learning the world you live in is not the reality that was beating into you. That would mess with anyone's head. These people are deeply mentally scarred and deserve respect, kindness, and any help they may need on a basis of equity. Forcing religion onto them is not helpful either.

There are several problems with this documentary. First, this was during the Roh Moo-Hyun era when the support network for defectors was inadequte. Second, the producer mistranslates several conversations to support her agenda. She seems to have started out with a notion that these defectors are deeply resentful. They're not. The conversation at 10:28 is labeled: "There are those who despise us because we are from NK." That's not what he said. What he said is, "When we say we're from NK, some people become guarded." He's disappointed that most SKoreans aren't as welcoming or open-minded as he'd like. However, at no point did he express any resentment toward SKoreans. That's a fiction manufactured by the producer. It is correct that many defectors are maladjusted and some have indeed committed suicides. However, it's an overstatement that the majority are deeply resentful. The video shows snippets of disappointments but not resentment. The language barrier is insidious and when you approach a subject with a preconception; you're bound to see what you want to see. This should not be the modus operandus of a professional or competent documentarian, which the producer of this video certainly is not.

Pyongyang is the capital of NK and is a lot more of a Metropolitan and the citizens have a lot more luxuries and freedoms. It is where the elite live. It is not the farm land and if anything it is only about 8 years behind SK in technology wise and style wise. It is rare for citizens of Pyongyang to defect.

This was from 1997, a lot has changed. Some organization do offer, emotional, financial, and psychological counciling to those who have left the North. I would love to see a follow up video to this...with the same people.

South Korea saw what happened to West Germany after their reunification with East Germany and they're very concerned. West Germans had to pay out the ass to rebuild the east and they still feeling the pain today. All the special taxes that West Germans had to pay made them resentful of the ossies. It will probably take at least another generation for the stigma of being from east Germany to go away.
It will be even worse for the two Koreas.

over 10 years ago, south Korea no longer even calls themselves South just Korea. They have made progress in leaps and bounds. Defectors do have avenues now.
I'd like to see a follow-up done of this, 20 yrs later. Perhaps Kim Hyung-duk expected too much. A follow-up would help clear up some of these questions.
I do hope these people can find some sort of relief in their freedom from such a tyrannical and horrible life in North Korea. I cannot imagine how hard it has to be, leaving a family behind to find some peace from the terror and constant fear of being taken away and put into a concentration camp.

i don't feel the same way about this man. Leaving an infant child behind is irresponsible to say the least. He knew his countrys policy on defectors' families when he fled, thus knowingly leaving his young wife and infant child subjects to torture and execution, to find freedom and a new family for himself.

I actually understand that. Before I was Christian, I was vegan and that was like an ideology; if you leave you are hated on and called basically a killer and evil. Whilst I was vegan my hair started falling out and I had huge stomach cramps I had to leave class at school it hurt so bad. After I stopped being vegan, it was hard for me to become Christian because I was afraid to trust again. I actually made fun of my mum for believing a lot. Which is really sad as Jesus saved me from suicide and our whole family many times through miracles He did and saved us from very powerful people and healed my family. My dad was also involved in dark spiritual things so there were many curses on our family at the time; someone who tried to ruin us and throw us onto the streets. Everything this person did was to destroy our family and that wa the only point to make us suffer. Now I know it was something demonic at the time I hated this person I recently forgave them though.
The difference between these ideologies and Christianity is that this dark magic and ideologies hurt our family and me when it promised to save us and that it was good, whilst for the past 10 years Jesus has saved our family from poverty and death and hatred and fear. That is how I know Christianity is good; God fulfills his promises. E.g. i know people who were healed by dark magic and they suffered a LOT afterwards; my mum's friend went to heal his spine and it worked, then it got much worse and he started taking pills which led to some of his organs being rotted. So yeah I completely understand this man in the video the devil has done very dangerous work in my life as these past ideologies make it hard for me to trust God 100% sometimes. But yeah Jesus has saved me so many times and never deserted me so yeah Glory be to God

It is sad when someone is willing to give up their freedom because they cannot fend for themselves. Reminds me of The Shankshaw Redemption. There needs to be more systems to help these people integrate back into society and help them develop skills to get good jobs.
It's called CULTURE SHOCK. Even prisoners here in the United States who get out are so culture shocked and feel so indifferent with society they wan to go back. Remember the movie Shawshank Redemption, Morgan Freeman 's character talks of being "institutionalized".

Yes, religion is hurting people. Did you know that South Korean Christians vandalized and burnt down Buddhist temples in the name of their religion? A cousin of my mine was in prison for over 20 years here in the U.S. Yes, he was guilty and did his time. When he was released, he told me he had trouble adjusting to daily life on his own. In prison he was told when and how to do simple things like waking up, eating, showering. That kind of thing. And he went to prison at 23. Imagine these people who have known nothing but oppression and propaganda all their lives being thrust into a whole different world. Hopefully people like these will find some meaning and purpose to their lives because now they can.

Sad, I could not agree with you more. I thought the replacement of CRT's by LCD's would help more. How is it possible for anyone with even the slightest bit of knowledge of North Korea to conclude that the real problem is capitalism or religion? Winston Churchill said (paraphrasing) that "democracy (in the form of a republic) was the worst form of government, except for all the others." The same holds true for capitalism. John Adams, "It is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand." People must learn to think for themselves again, any invention by humans is bound to have it's good and bad points. Choose what does the most good while doing the least harm...you will not find perfection here.
Some of these defectors have extremely dark pasts. They lived privileged lives in the North and were bullies and sadists who inflicted untold cruelties on the mere workers, who produced the food and did the menial work without tools. Some of them like the physicist saved their skins knowing that their families would be condemned to torture and work camps and even death. I am sure that infant son he left behind was killed. South Korea should not let even a single escapee from the North, but just send them on to China which is the country that caused the Korean war to begin with.

On Dec 19, 2012 I met a half Korean, half American boy named Quincy, who was about 4 years old. He came into my path as I was deep in meditation outside by a bird of paradise flower. He looked at me with his beautiful, big sparkly eyes and I told him he was going to be the president of the world. I have no idea where this information came from but his mother immediately asked me how I knew he said that exact same thing that morning.
I gave him a Mayan worry doll and asked him to please invent a solar powered cell phone.
About a year later, after I was in Bible boot camp, I realized Honduras was filled with witch craft and that doll may not have been in Quincy’s best interest. I immediately prayed in front of my mirror to free Quincy. After repeating it over and over, I realized I was chanting “frequency”.
His mother was Korean and Christian. She moved back to Korea the following year.
I gave her my favorite, lucky scarf in exchange for our connection.

Very fascinating documentary, I've been wondering for a while how these individuals cope. I've seen another one where many were discontent as well.
You can't help but feel sympathy for someone so disenchanted they are trying to return to the land of their torturers.
That's normal ,it is hard to adjust completely different reality.
That couple (around 10 minutes in) is really ungrateful. They were in North Korea, where they starved and were tortured, so they went to China, where life was so bad that the husband got frostbite from sleeping on the streets - but when they went to South Korea, they were given enough money to get a house and given a job that enabled them to afford shit that even we consider a luxury. How dare them complain about lack of support?

I've worked in various Law Enforcement jobs since 1979. In the 1990's I worked with Adult Parole Department. Leaving North Korea and being "Free" in South Korea is like my Parolee's that are released from San Quentin Prison in California. They were scared to death to leave Prison Life and become an "invisible" person, in poverty in California. North Koreans are Institutionalized like men who have spent 20+ years in a maximum security prison. To be "Free" you have to fend for yourself and if you are in poverty in a rich society that is more frightening than being in the Institution. Prisoners often find comfort in a place where you have a bed and three nutritious meals and a schedule to discipline you so you need very little self-discipline and just Survive in the Institution. North Koreans are just plain "Institutionalized". Ask any Parole officer about it.
being from east germany (GDR) i found this film very interesting. despite the east german regime being much less violent than north korea there are some astonishing parallels. the people in the two parts, divided by decades, have grown apart massively. the same language alone does not unite them anymore. if north korea ever becomes free it will be an extremely hard process. even many east germans are still struggling now, 25 years after re-unification, and we had west german televison and much more freedoms than the north koreans. north korea is so extreme, a re-unification of the two nations seems a near impossible task.

Amigo, I want your opinion, I grew up seeing Hollywood movies, documentaries and news about the Berlin wall.
Was the wall an evil wall or was a, let's say a reasonable and logical common sense structure that any sovereign nation has a right to erect. Because as most people I didn't even know where West Berlin was and now I feel that for most of my life I have been lied to about the purpose of the Berlin Wall.
I had no idea. So much fear and dislike on both sides. No available counseling or nationalization services. No schools to help defectors learn how to live in the South. I think that would be a great start.

Mark Stoltzfus From what I understand, North Koreans aren't allowed to make any decisions in their lives, large or small, from their jobs and relationships, to what they eat and where they live. I can't imagine how hard it must be to be alone in a new country that might as well be on another planet, and faced with so many important, overwhelming decisions...Life is hard all over, but it really makes me see just how many advantages I've received, the choices I have in front of me, the opportunities I've been lucky enough to have been given in my life. Really changes my perspective, you know? It's about human rights, things that every man, woman, and child should have but are so often denied.

I know this is 23 yrs ago but I can imagine how many more defectors from North Korea feel completely overwhelmed by the outside world. I pray that all of the north koreans will be free from their generations of kim dynasty.
If you want to know why the disparity of aggressive capitalist competition was unprecedented for him it's because the "tightly controlled" socialist system of North Korea deprives ambition. It was the first time he encountered people with aspirations.
It is of utmost importance to understand when this was made. This was filmed in 1996-97 when North Korea could still be considered moderately stable enough from Kim Il-Sung's rule to withstand hardships. Don't get me wrong, Kim Il-Sung was a tyrant and a monster himself by all accepted metrics, but he was at least able to have also provided the NK people with just enough economic diversity, healthcare services, and infrastructure to hold his nation together. It was his successors who are most responsible for NK really going off the tracks.
It was the reigns of his son (Kim Jong Il) and grandson (Kim Jong Un) that the country descended into the Hell on Earth we know it as. Kim Jong Il's regime oversaw the complete abandonment of morality and human decency in NK. And Kim Jong Un has only compounded matters by continuing his father's policies, but doing more of it in order to demonstrate that he wasn't too young or soft. He's had to crank it up to 11, basically. Where his father would kill 5 or 6 people for committing a political crime, Jong Un is killing 10. Where Jong Il punished 3 generations of families of someone who escaped, Jong Un is punishing 8; etc. That sort of thing.
Long story short, the North Korea that it's defectors knew in the mid '90s is not the North Korea they're escaping from today.
This is a very interesting documentary, they seem like humble people.
To escape fools and find yourself among a new breed of fools. Unbelievable the amount of ignorance in the world.

From a complete outsider I can guess going into a completely different life style would be traumatic. I too wonder how many people have defected to the North. There must be some and if life was so terrible in the South for those living on the fringes of society I guess the North may give a new start . I remember a Russian friend telling me about the pain when communism collapsed. She said "You remind me of the good old days when we met. This is not living it is existing"! Her marriage broke up and she sounded as if there was no hope.
Certainly for a South Korean on the run facing serious criminal charges, the North might look a very good option as they could escape justice. It is a fact that a number of people with criminal records in their own country live in China. Without a doubt the reverse is also true.

I know that it's hard to adjust to a new reality...I came to the US when I was still very young ad came from Poverty and lack of access to many things... Yet , here at the beginning was kind of difficult due to a lot more competition, but that went away really fest once I started seeing that here I could be much more and the opportunity to do whatever I wanted, there was and is a lot of help to achieve! I completely agree with you..thousands of defectors are so happy to finally have food and a home..provided by south korean government and help getting a job..ANY JOB..they are just happy to walk where they eant..ride where they want to go..do things in freedom and EAT the food..they all seem very happy to be free now..this video..just..well it is TOO FAR OFF for me to believe.. There are many political and cultural developments coming about between the 2 Korea's. I would love to see you do a 2007 or 2008 version on the subject.
This doc is 24 years old and I'm sad to know the influx of NK refugees has not been nearly as "massive" as these people predicted. In the past 70 years only 200 NK refugees has made it to the United States. Oh and it's a sad, sad day when the Russian government is considered a huge step up for a refugee.
Life is an incredibly hard experience.
It is hard to change from a country that decide for you and gives you what you need (but you don't have freedom) to a country where you take your own decisions and fight to get what you want (but have all your freedom)...

This is really sad. However, I can partially understand their desire to return to North Korea. When you've been treated so badly, and conditioned to live life a certain way, that's ALL you expect. And you almost feel safer in a way, b/c there's a set routine. So when things change so suddenly, it's hard to accept it. Especially if they're extremely different from what you're used to & can't find others to relate to. I pray they're hearts/minds start to heal. In terms of religion, Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No other way. However, I pray they come to this decision themselves. I respect the guy that said he doesn't believe, b/c he is being honest and taking him time.

It's not that they can't fend for themselves it's that they have a serious food shortage in NK and it is made worse by their government heavily regulating free trade within their country.
People from north korea don't know what smart phones are... they barely even have electricity and eat the same 2 or 3 things their entire lives.. defectors arriving in South Korea say it's like jumping in a time machine, EVERYTHING is new and foreign.. imagine that
North Korea isn't having a famine because of a "lack of free trade." People are starving throughout Sub Saharan Africa and they have more than enough free trade. The issue is totalitarianism and near constant sanctions. It is an endless cycle: North Korea diverts funds to create Nuclear Weapons and the U.N places sanctions on NK so that NK can't get food inside. Besides, what a strange argument that is. Does the US teach students how to live outside the USA? Hardly, we're lucky to get more than 2 years of foreign language in high-school.

He should have returned, then tried to escape with his family as others have successfully done instead of abandoning them behind, shameful.
That was my first thought exactly as well.....He was in Moscow the whole time so probably didn't even think to consult with his wife before seeking asylum in Russia......

If we were to ignore the military tensions between the two, one can almost imagine that S Korea wants N Korea to remain a communist dictatorship; were the latter to become a free-market economy (and therefore freedom of human capital), S Korea will see an influx of economic immigrants, which in turn will impose a strain on its public services.

The church realized that if there is falsehood in the bible, their religion is false. They killed "heretics" that discovered the truth, to silence then and frighten the rest of the thinking people. There are also cognitively deficient people who cannot use logic and derive conclusions. They just want to believe in something and typically they believe crap they parents or some authority figure told them to believe, often in childhood, because it is easy to make kids believe crap when their brains are forming.

Yes you are correct, when ppl brought opposing ideas, and supposed contradictions about the bible, some churches in the past have silenced them, mafia style, and I'm ashamed of that pass, and that is also a sin according to the world! Good point; I've heard one SK official saying that they have to learn from Germany; don't reunite too fast. If NK collapses, the SK economy will be hardest hit and will be flooded with a lot of hungry NK's; I'd say, if NK collapses, SK should still treat it as a separate country and keep the border closed(even if people of NK die of hunger); then gradually, over the years, both should begin to unite. If NK collapses, there's going to be so much hardship for SK.

I really feel for these North Koreans. They can be so horribly scarred. They have seen executions, torture, starvation. I think leaving that behind and suddenly changing so dramatically can easily overwhelm anyone especially when you are not used to making decisions for yourself. I hear that alone overwhelms most of them.

It's very naive of NKoreans to think that once they reach SK that everything will be a-ok. Opportunity is better yes but it's a very different system and they need to adopt. As some pointed out already, the best scenario of unification is the Economic development of North. Only when NorthK has adopted market economy like China and it can stand on its own, the unification and its people would be seamless.
