Winner of the 2021 International Chopin Piano Competition, Bruce Liu has become a real sensation of the pianistic world and has been on an extensive tour across the world’s most prestigious stages. The recording of his title-winning performance was praised by Gramophone as "one of the most distinguished Chopin recitals of recent years, full of maturity, character and purpose." We are thrilled to welcome Bruce to this new episode of 'Music in Words'. In conversation with Prof. Daniel Chua, Bruce talks about his artistic inspirations, interests in jazz and karting, thoughts on his overnight success and how technology influences the evolution of artistic approaches. Such a magical style he has, it’s impossible for Mr. Liu adequately explain how he arrives at these decisions. He’s so articulate with both his words and his music that we simply have to listen carefully. His wisdom makes itself clear. This is a musician, who broadcasts so much light and passion and thoughtfulness and joy. We are lucky to live in this age with him.

The description of 'happy Chopin' is exactly my impression while watching Bruce Liu in the Chopin Competition, I called it 'sunny Chopin' then. I also notice his Chopin is a bit different, notably the pointed, detaché, less legato phrasing in many places. Both these are considered not typical of Chopin. The interview is more of a chat show than a deeper exploration of Bruce Liu's musical thoughts. I thought his favourite colour would be this maple leaf (or is it red China) red, since he is wearing this shirt and he wore it in the Rubinstein competition.
A cool man, not only an excellent pianist. Personal life is his business, maybe he is looking for a soulmate.

Bad question about a fav girl... put Bruce in an awkward situation if he is a closeted gay.
Except that Bruce himself talked about his attraction to women in interviews shortly after winning. He seemed to clearly present himself as straight. But yes, I agree it's an awkward and almost inappropriate question, especially considering how perfect and insightful the rest of the interview was.
