My dad used to play this song in the summer time, when I was a kid. He would open all the windows and I just remember the feeling of the air coming through the house and this song playing on the radio. It was this song that sparked my love of music, and those summer days listening to it. I was probably in 3rd or 4th grade. I’m 28 now.
When I was 17, I truly feel in love with someone who was very dear to my heart all my life, we grew up together, our parents were best friends. He suffered from drug addiction, and I always tried so hard to help him, during our relationship I printed out these lyrics and gave them to him, this song is how our friendship and relationship was word for word. We didn't work out, we broke up, but I tried so hard to save him still after the break up, and never stopped loving him. On July 14th 2017 he passed away from an overdose, and this song makes me cry everytime i hear it, i wish so hard I could of saved him. The part when he says "but that was just a dream.." rips right through me on how badly I wanted and would dream about saving him and seeing him clean and happy 💔
That's a shame, when I met my partner (my first love, first anything tbh :-P) I was a heroin addict, didn't want to put her through that but she was my neighbor and she took to chapping me every morning to go out walking, and to be so comfortable with anybody (I had bad anxiety) was quite amazing to me, we were spending a lot of time together and I was managing to keep clean, one night she was talking to her friend about struggling to find a guy who wasn't afraid to commit and I blurted out that it was exactly what I wanted, she didn't realize that I was suggesting that we start a serious relationship so I asked directly, really showing my complete lack of any experience with women, but hey, we have two kids now and she has said that in every aspect I have been the best partner she had, except for maybe my low confidence outside of with her, so must've done something right. And what I get from her is so much better than heroin! (The love I mean! Although...) Just wish it could be different for you, my partner loves this song, she had me blast it all night in bed drinking and having fun! Good days, although we stopped the heavy drinking, we remained the couple always holding hands with our heads on each other and I think the guy downstairs still hates us!

Very well done for getting clean. It’s not about religion though. Losing his religion means he is angry. It’s an American south saying. This is the first song I heard that got me into REM. I was 10 and i found it by chance on the radio one night. A happy accident got me into one of the best bands in the world. One bar and I'm sent back to being 10 in the summer of 2001 and the musical discovery that a new radio transmitter created. That was just a dream. Just a dream. Or was it?
I would probably have to say this is the absolute best song ever. Even though REM is not my favorite band, this song is beyond words or explanation. I can listen to this song on repeat for an entire day. There aren't many songs I can say that about.
After being raised in a powerful, mind-control cult, having that belief system destroy my life and losing my family because I left it all, this song so adequately expresses my love for them, and my utter frustration at not being able to reach them; to not be able to help them to "wake up" to the reality of what they are a part of. This song, from the time I first heard it, has been my validation, my affirmation, and my support.
I am happy that you found this song, and that it has helped you so much. I am happy, also, that you came to realize what you now wish they could. Bless you❤

In the song, Michael Stipe sings the lines "That's me in the corner/That's me in the spotlight/Losing my religion". The phrase "losing my religion" is an expression from the southern region of the United States that means losing one's temper or civility, or "being at the end of one's rope." Stipe told The New York Times the song was about romantic expression.[8] He told Q that "Losing My Religion" is about "someone who pines for someone else. It's unrequited love, what have you."[9] Stipe compared the song's theme to "Every Breath You Take" by The Police, saying, "It's just a classic obsession pop song. I've always felt the best kinds of songs are the ones where anybody can listen to it, put themselves in it and say, 'Yeah, that's me.'"[10]

I can't believe you people don't know the meaning of this song. They told everybody right after it was released. We knew about it right away. It's About unrequited love. It's when you are hopelessly in love with some one, but they don't love you back. They don't even know you exist, nor do they care. Look It up. Also look up unrequited love,
@@jessicacammarata841 Some equate the words religion and spirituality. The emotions of unrequited love definitely have an effect on our faith/God/spiritual thoughts and vice versa. Wow. I heard this song for the first time just recently. I don't care about it's meaning but I like it a lot. It's a nice tune to play while walking your dog. At 66 I don't imagine I'll get too listen to it for 26 years however I'll give it my best shot . Keep on Rocking.

I will always be still listening to this
Amazing how a song can be so dark and so awesome at the same time. Seriously this describes how I feel about the dating scene.
I'm a hip hop producer but right now this is the soundtrack to my life.
I've been jamming to this song for 24 years
Brian Pighini , so have I . Plan on jamming another 24.
So 90’s!
*claps very loudly*
How old are you???? you look like 20
22 years lol
Love the song I'm in my 70s and remember when it was first released it was a great song then and it still is.
I definitely lost my religion when I was strung out on heroin and alcohol. I'm glad I found it again in my sobriety. God bless REM.
Very well done for getting clean.
It’s not about religion though. Losing his religion means he is angry. It’s an American south saying.
The song is about a crush, and being unable to tell person you like them so trying to hint to the person in the hope they give you a sign or make their feelings known.
Yes Praise God , I did to, rather He called me home and I'm so happy for you , we need to be strong its 2021 and life is hard if you are awake to what's going on the end is nigh look up for you your redemption
@@davidmcmullen6485 I look at any art like music as interpreted by the listener. You very well may be right, the song just has different meaning to me.
I got the same message from this song! Congratulations on your sobriety!!
@@vilmafernandez5242 thank u!
I,m 50, and i love REM. they have some great songs.
Biggest song of the 90's. Still going strong through this modern crap.
There aren't many songs I can say that about.
one does not simply listen to this song only once
Dark times...to me...
Watch me listen to it once

never ...this is not a one song listen too
After being raised in a powerful, mind-control cult, having that belief system destroy my life and losing my family because I left it all, this song so adequately expresses my love for them, and my utter frustration at not being able to reach them; to not be able to help them to "wake up" to the reality of what they are a part of. This song, from the time I first heard it, has been my validation, my affirmation, and my support.
I am happy that you found this song, and that it has helped you so much. I am happy, also, that you came to realize what you now wish they could. Bless you❤
All I can say, it's a true CLASSIC! Never gets old!!
2019!!! REM is one of the greatest bands ever!!!
That's me at McDonalds,
That's me in the drive through,
Losing my McMuffin,
Trying to keep a few bites down,
And I don't know that I can do it,
Oh no, I ate too much,
Before a run,
I hear the First Sergeant,
He's yelling out my name,
I'm out of formation,
Pretending to tie my shoe,
But I'm really puking,
Don't you hate it,
When the puke goes,
Running through your nose,
And all your buddies laugh,
That's me...
(I'll finish writing that some day)
Ed Becka KEEP GOING
Ed Becka I hope you are not sick from your stomack

Damn, best comment ever
Omg.. so funny 😂😂
This song has always made me think of my narcissistic mother, her broken promises, and my niave hope that she would/will someday change. Very bittersweet.
Edit: it has now been 2 years since I posted this. For those who are interested in an update- I've officially gone no contact with my mother after 35 years of nothing but patience and forgiveness on my part. Maybe I've been nieave this whole time. But I have no choice but to prioritize myself and my children. It's time to focus on healing now. To all of u who have commented such kind words.. it might just seem like a yt comment to u but it means the world to me. And to those of u who have shared your own stories.. I wish u nothing but strength and healing for all of u🖤
Promises of Cranberries
God bless u girl.

An absolute classic that takes me back to being a teenager.
Meanwhile, I'm a teenager wishing I'd grown up listening to this music
@@aileensotorosa7422 Same here, I wasn’t even born yet when this song came out (born in 1995) though I discovered it only a few years ago it’s one of my favs by them
In the song, Michael Stipe sings the lines "That's me in the corner/That's me in the spotlight/Losing my religion". I've always felt the best kinds of songs are the ones where anybody can listen to it, put themselves in it and say, 'Yeah, that's me.'"[10]
Bob Savage Good insight!
Bob Savage thanks for the info.

A boy who i loved very much made me listen to this song. He broke my heart without even realizing out. I don't really miss him anymore, but this still feels like him, sour and sweet.
My favorite line is 'The lengths that I would go to... the distance in your eyes"
The lengths I would go to is something that just speaks to me.

Pulling me through some hard times! I’ve lost my religion a few times as of late. That was a dream for sure
These are some of the most original and thoughtful lyrics Ever. Dense layers of introspection and desire.
I remember when back in 2005 I had a phone and everytime it turned on this song would play, I heard this on the radio today and it bring back long lost memories 👌
'Missing You Already' brought me here!

@Lola your English is cancer.
I can't believe you people don't know the meaning of this song. They told everybody right after it was released. We knew about it right away. It's About unrequited love. It's when you are hopelessly in love with some one, but they don't love you back. They don't even know you exist, nor do they care. Look It up. Also look up unrequited love,
Thank you!!! When this song came out everyone was in a uproar about it bcuz of religion when it has NOTHING to do with religion lol.
I only wish I had to look up the meaning of unrequited love.
@@jessicacammarata841 Some equate the words religion and spirituality. The emotions of unrequited love definitely have an effect on our faith/God/spiritual thoughts and vice versa. Our spiritual beliefs CAN save us.....I pray we all keep Our Creator (Father) in 1st place in our lives, we, 2nd then others (not things) next. Love above all!
Thought it about Christian turning gay
Oh Ruth... you're asking the current youth to THINK? To have to consider meaning in a pop song (this is classic rock however) beyond slamming women and talking about killing cops? Falling on deaf ears, dear.
I remember when I first heard this on the radio :)
Such a good song.
I had been looking for this song for so long and I finally found it

REM owes it's popularity to the depression everyone has felt. Everybody hurts, and they are not afraid to share that.

My dad had a stroke in 2018, and this song helped me through it, every time I thought I heard him laughing or trying I would play this song, I love you dad and I miss you.. I know you tried and I was in the corner just watching and helpless but your no longer in pain, I did not lose my religion instead you made my faith stronger 🙏❤️
I used to sing the refrain of this song on the school to my classmates when I was 8 years old back in 2004,they didn't know what song was,but I did......even better now with 21 years old in 2017,thank you dad for my great taste of music......
I stopped loving a person that i used to love the most. Now every lyrics of this song starts making sense to me. She can't be bigger than my life, and I can't emotionally be wavered by her.
I was 5 when this song was released.. and it gaves us lot of mixed emotions while remembering the past.. The lyrics is lonely af..
My favorite song EVER made. Out of the million's of songs, this one is it. My life described by song. 1st song i ever knew from beginning to end. Back in 1991. Still hits...
Haha only reading the comments to see if anyone else holds this as their favorite song as I do as well! Awesome!
I heard this somewhere. Couldn't figure out what it was. Or where I'd heard it before. A lot happened since then. I lost my dog, my friends, and I almost life my life too. Recently I heard it again, and it brought me back to the good times, when I was noticed. When I had something to live for. So, that's why I'm here.
There are always good times to be had! Stay strong, stay in the moment & just keep moving forward. ☺ Wishing you happiness!! 💙
