Having done a number of fairly long solo tramps myself I can fully underline everything you say here. Being alone - especially when surrounded by other people - can be discouraging. But I found that being in the wilderness on my own became a strangely meditative experience. An awareness that you were only one bad step away from making a lot of problems for yourself is a very rare experience in the modern world. Our deep ancestors must have experienced this all the time - but we have lost touch with it.
