Poor Maureen, poor Vanessa, poor Matt; too bad they were casualties in the Rauch Era. When did Matt and Vanessa "jump the shark"? In 1998 I still hoped for them and their family but was never satisfied.
For me, they jumped the shark when the writers who created them left. Between that and Dinah’s arrival, where ‘their’ story became all about her, they lost a lot of the magic that had made them so appealing to start. They were too genuine to fit into the regular soap formula, and later regimes had absolutely no idea what to do with them yet they were still too popular to destroy so they were either relegated to Dinah duty or back-burnered. Even at the time it was clear the Rauch era was the height of stupidity for most of the couples on the show (not just Matt/Vanessa), but watching these scenes in retrospect is instructive. It’s not hard to see why people tuned out and things died a slow, painful death up until cancellation in 2009.
