I find the original version wonderfully haunting, but I don't even remember it from it's own era. In late 1980/early 1981, I was 24. By that time I was heavily into synthesiser stuff, as well as heavy rock. I can put a sci-fi-psychedelic twist on the meaning of the original Passions version.
