- I love sailing at night, not only because it’s beautiful, but because it’s night about half the time through the year, so if you’re cruising you can double the distance you can cover, and if you’re racing, well we’ve won lots of races by sailing faster than our competitors at night.
So in this video I’m going to share some tips and tricks I use to sail at night, including:
How do you prepare?
How does night vision work?
How do you find things?
How do you stay safe?
How do you trim the sails?
How do you maintain a heading?
How do you avoid collisions?

This is a re-cut of a night sailing video I recently released which includes "pedagogical enhancements" from my wife who is a professional teacher. I should have known better than to release the last version without having her review it first!
thank you for your videos. I'm beggining to sail and I really appreciate them (although all my problems circle around a two-stroke outboard that doesn't start xD)
@@manuelpena3988Congrats on picking a great sport to get involved in! Only it’s much more than a sport and involves physics, weather, engineering, mechanics, and psychology! I’ve spent a fair bit of time troubleshooting two-stroke outboards so can relate…
night sailing in the Pac NW is dangerous due to logs, deadheads in particular
Yes and especially during periods of very high tides or high runoff!
I really enjoyed this video because you really thought of everything!
Cool - so glad you liked it!!!
Great advice.
Thanks - glad it was helpful!
Well who is going to handle a spinnaker during the night ... ?! Couch sailor ?
We do it in every overnight race and there are several per year! Hard to film in the dark though…
