All-New 2024 Lexus GX 550 Premium + is a Hard Working Luxury SUV

- It’s no unibody crossover. The capable body-on-frame Lexus GX 550 is all-new and ready to conquer tough terrain, tow up to 9,000 pounds or deliver a family of seven to the movies. The tough looking sheetmetal rides on a new fully boxed frame architecture that's shared with Tundra, Tacoma and big brother LX. The V8 is gone. Until the hybrid powertrain arrives, all GXs get their motivation from a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 that pumps out 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque mated to a 10-speed automatic. Tom Voelk travels to Tucson, AZ to drive a GX 550 Premium + model in Nightfall Mica.
Tom attended a manufacturer's event to assess this vehicle. Opinions remain his own.

What a great upgrade! Hopefully dealers don't gouge us.
LOL. I stopped believing in Santa decades ago.
This is the first time I’m tempted to buy a vehicle that doesn’t remotely fit my lifestyle, purely because it looks so good 😅
Same here
do it 😮
Took the words out of my mouth
Ditto! Lol. It’s also the first time I haven’t let fuel mileage scare me off.
What color?
4:45 I just watched SG before this. Together you provide a well rounded picture of the car you both review. Its nice getting different perspectives on the same model. I enjoy your brief.
The SG guys are great. Didn't have much time to talk to them this trip because we were both working until sundown.
This doesn't surprise me. @@DrivenCarReviews
Huge improvement stylistically.
What was somewhat goofy looking, is now quite ruggedly handsome.
16:12 - you can turn off the Driver Attention alerts within the infotainment system. Same as in the current RX. That was the first thing we turned off. Turning it off does not turn off the other safety features, so its a win-win.
Beautiful SUV. The hybrid option should increase performance and gas mileage. On another note, we spend part of the year in Tucson. I hope you had a good experience in the area. We love it down here at this time of year.
Great video Tom, Tucson looks adventurous through the big greenhouse! Very exciting to see a new SUV of this size available without the burden of a third row. If Lexus is reading, I do wish we could get all the luxury features (especially the aniline seats) in the overtrail line with no third row, or that we could choose to delete the third row from the luxury line. Thanks again
The interior is what sold me on this car.
That low mileage with premium gas pretty much breaks the deal for me. I'm waiting to see what Nissan does with the Armada for 2025.
Great review, thanks for posting!
Excellent car review ! Learned a lot
Great looking rig!
Thank you for the review!
Great vid as always Tom! That mpg is unconscionable tbh.
Wait for the hybrid trim
…to get that whopping extra 1 to 2 mpg more😂
definitely will freak out the above-20 mpg crowd! s'ok, Lexus has the TX. tks Tom for the hint ;p
this larger than midsized body on frame boxy high-rake SUV is a heavyweight for sure. it's for the big suv lovers ones where they hazard to say how come the V8 wasn't there!
I bet it is great for the target audience. Thanks once again Tom.
Great video!
Lexus always has been a vehicle to consider 😊
Tom, You chose the right colour of GX for this video, that dark blue is CLASSY. 🤩 Speaking of classy, we really appreciate 16:40 the disclaimer that reminds us CZcamsrs like yourself often get a free trip when covering vehicle launches like this. 👍
To be honest, the blue doesn't photograph well. But I knew Lexus had shot running footage of it so...
I like the Nori Green
100% agree - calling that out is pure integrity move.
God bless you, Tom. Thank you for talking about noise at highway speeds. Loaded, maybe pulling a 3-5k lb trailer, on the highway, that’s what most people will be doing with these.
With so many places to store water bottles, and with Americans aging, some manufacturer is bound to offer a chilled catheter option soon. 😊
Enjoyed this, Tom!
Americans aren't aging. Ever heard of millennials?
😂 one of them had a chilled cup holder a few years ago, I think it was Volvo. I'd prefer that over an entire storage bin.
Great to see you there, and nice work on the video. Hope to cross paths again soon. Cheers...
Right back at you Bryon! Can't make Portland Auto Show. Mudfest?
Good to watch you, as ever. Reasonable choices for the well-heeled driver are piling up. Even with your help I'm confused a bit.
Too many good choices is a good thing
Well this video just made my car buying decision harder. Great job.
Holy review review from 1999 Tom, do I need to be printing out all my emails before Y2K? Did they not let you into the Overtrail when you told them you were from the AARP?
Savage Geese shout out 😂
Nice review Tom as usual. I wish lexus would have used the hybrid from the Sequoia and put a Panoramic roof standard except for the overtrail model for in case you wanted a top storage.
Well, the pano roof is available on the Luxury + model. I'm curious how Lexus will deliver the hybrid system.
Absolutely perfect vehicle. Pity I can’t afford it. In that color amd trim is perfection. I wait patiently for 4-Runner.
Why? They'll be over 60k with dealer greed
Isnt remotely perfect. Mpg is zero improved and output is low for the price tag
Wait for the hybrid
lexus GX seems to be a really nice car
Very nice car❤ I'd definitely want a test drive that beast👌
Looks like a G-Wagen. No accident, I'm guessing
Looks zero like a G
I'll have to see what the mpg on the Hybrid model brings.
Looking forward to seeing what they do with the hybrid powertrain and if it will be a MPG or power-focused setup. Whichever, it better come with at least a 2kw outlet in the back like the new Land Cruiser offers.
I would buy this before any EV ❤
Thank you for bringing up the TX during this review! Excellent work as always.
I’m gonna wait at least 5 years til they iron out the kinks, and at least offer a hybrid power train.
12 MPG is just unacceptable - I don’t care if I make 6 figures, that’s just a needless expense.
Me too. Even Lexus has issues
What an amazing car I'm definitely will buy this car
Good clear review much better than others that I watched.
Second gen GX owner here (also owns a 4Runner). Definitely excited about the 3rd gen and looking forward to upgrade for the styling alone!
However It’s unclear what exactly is the capability improvement (the trail looks very easy for my Gen2). After 10 years I am still very happy with the v8 and the off-road capabilities.
Only real upgrade is the infotainment system. Features that you like - knee pad 9:19 is standard on the Gen2.
Pop-up rear glass 13:00 also standard on the Gen2. The hatch is so vertical when it opens it will hit the car behind so parallel parking will be a problem (old swing door can be opened a crack if needed).
Yes, the trail was much easier than Lexus wanted, part of the course was under water due to a flash flood. The upgrade is in the suspension and frame. The structure is noticeable more rigid and the on-center feel is is significantly more planted. The hatch opens so it will not hit the vehicle behind (unless you're literally parked bumper to bumper). It's something I consider when checking the cargo area out.
I'm really wanting to look at the base model. How's the ride stability vs a 4 runner? My 2022 sr5 runner feels like a constant workout to keep it center lane and not swerve. And going around corners at slow speed in a parking lot it's always jiggling feeling. Have they corrected this or yota body on frame still tipsy??😊😊😊😊
You will like this much more than the 4Runner. In every way.
With all the puns in the intro, my guess is someone has been watching "Succession" on HBO.
Oh, and thank you for the nice & clear disclosure at the end. All youtube creators ought to do the same. Overall, I think I will wait & see what the new 4Runner looks like.
Nice review and good trim selection to review. Thanks.
I would defenetily love to test drive this vehicle.
Thanks
t's been a long time since I rock and rolled
It's been a long time since I did the stroll
Ooh let me get it back, let me get it back
Let me get it back, baby, where I come from
😁😁 that's what Cadillac would've said.. but yes it's been a long lonely time!
greate suv!!
This is what we mean when we are talking about dream car
Jeep Grand Cherokee should learn something from this Lexus. No shiny cheap black plastic anywhere.
Just better plastic😂 no wood nor aluminum accents.
Last gen Land cruiser replacement and possible LX; curious how the next 4runner will look
Excellent video Tom. And I do think this blue GX is the best looking one I've seen so far. I still think the outgoing one looks better but I have to say this 550, in this blue, with those wheels, is starting to grow on me!
I'd take one in Nori Green with saddle interior. It's gorgeous.
I would want to put overtrail wheels onto a normal 3 row model.
Beast
Can it be flat towed?
I want the Prado version.
Nice car
Love love your content Tom! Any chance you might review the Ineos Grenadier?
Probably not unfortunately.
I loved your review, one of the most thorough complete ones that I’ve watched! I’m interested in getting this vehicle but living in SoCal I’m probably going to save up and wait for the hybrid to come out! :)
They discontinued the hybrid in the US? Did I hear that right?? That MPG is abhorrent. There is no justification.
Hybrid is coming though no word on if it's tuned for power or efficiency.
Thanks for a great review! Your attention to detail is amazing!
Looks like a RANGE ROVER
yuup Lexus is right! There s a lot of ppl out there with a lot of money! I feel so bad now because i m the minority! Nice car this one!
Thank you for showing the premium plus in such great detail. Just made a factory order yesterday. Really hope I get a 2024 🤞🏻
Will you be reviewing the 2024 Lincoln Nautilus?
Eventually. I hope. Ford doesn't have a lot of press vehicles though.
Wow i really impressed by this new Lexus gx want buy one soon
Danke!
Danke right back to you. Thanks for your support!
Thank you for the disclosure and honest report ❤
Of course!!
Great review! I love the new styling but hate the wheels in this tester. Not a fan of machined wheels. The interior is okay, not as exciting as the exterior.
Good stuff
Gas mileage is great! I see a huge market for middle age guys who have been driving Tundra's and other full size trucks for the last 15 years (yes, that's me). Easily beats my Tundra MPG.
Oh dear. Tom, I have to point out a typo again. 1:01 Katelyn Salzman is (I assume) an analyst, and not an anaylist. Sorry to be a nitpicker. I enjoyed the Lexus GX 550 video, but it is certainly not a vehicle for me. I am more of a Honda CR-V kind of guy.
Well, at least I got her name right.
The all-new-for-2024 Lexus GX 550 is essentially a poorman's Land Cruiser and I am HERE for it Tom! Go Vikings! Toot toot!
Actually, in this case, the new Landcruiser (Prado) coming to the US will be the cheaper version...the 'poor' man's GX.
@@carbzav8017 Please don't let your "math" get in the way of my assertions.
Go North Stars!
@@khunopie9159 North Stars?
@@DrivenCarReviews they are the Kirby Pucketts of the NHL 🔥
Yeah, it's OK, I guess...
But, I'm going to wait for the Premium ~ model to come out.
No V8 ! what a damn shame
I already have a Lexus v8, test drove a 550 yesterday. Definitely adding it to the stable and keeping my v8 too.
Plug in hybrid please. Most days I drive sub 30 miles.
The fuel economy is horrible especially for the output.
Looks great, Toyota reliability, 5 or 7 seating. The only disappointing aspect, a lack of colours for the price point... yes, yes, I know they are a business, maximize profits etc...maybe offer a custom colour option? Otherwise far superior to the Europeans for the money.
I was thinking the same, limited / unimaginative color palette..... lots of beiges and the usual 'meh' silvers and grays. The dark green and blue are sharp but will also be dust collectors. To at least augment these, - still nothing flashy - but they need a solid but still conservative medium blue or blue-gray, a lighter medium green, maybe also a 'chestnut' type color.
Beautiful Lexus but the rear spoiler to big , i wait 2 years
I can't be the only one who finds this depressing.😅
it gets more interesting offroad
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD I guess? But I can only find this as a compelling used option ten years from now. The price it's demanding is really hard to swallow if you want an offroader (especially since there's better for less) and it's also not the most luxurious option you can get at that price too. It just seems to be trying to go for two markets that tend to be a bit more mutually exclusive, I dunno.
@@CrazyBader Luxury offroader is a single market in third world countries. It is a rather pointless vehicle in the U.S.
@@TinLeadHammer Yeah, I'm in one of those "third world" countries (Kuwait) and I know for a fact this is going to sell like hotcakes over here. Doesn't stop it from being depressing, especially since it'll never see dirt nor sand.
And yeah, this is an entirely pointless market in the USA, but hey, Wrangler Sahara and Bronco Everglades don't stay long on dealership lots, after all.
I like it. I'm not usually a fan of twin turbo V6 trucks but if anybody is going to do it right and reliable it's going to be Toyota.
we'll see....
Look no further than the Tundra
🖐😂 “subscription required after 3 years for voice prompt to use controls”. Keep it.😂
Exterior is nice, but the lack of luxury and bullshit subscriptions is a hard pass. Better choices from other companies !!!
From 3:28 to 3:51 … the front overhang … they claimed it was a challenge to design it as short as it is. However, the Toyota Landcruiser, which is the identical ‘brother’ to the GX, has a much much shorter overhang. Makes no sense reg the GX … they could have made it short like the Landcruiser …
Looks cool and all but the off-road version needs more ground clearance. My OBW has 9.5" and could use another inch or so. I assume this is the Lexus version of the Sequoia or is it the Land Cruiser?
Land Cruiser
I guess the embargo is over . . .
looks exactly like the 2024 landcruiser?
Yup (other than the grille). Like I said.
🥇🥇🥇🥇
this or the new land cruiser, decisions decisions
The transportation for a garment factory manager in Pakistan.
Man, spot on. You'd have to pry a Russian oligarch out of his chauffeured G-Wagen with promises of beluga caviar and high end escorts, but garment factory manager in Pakistan -- the kind that chains the doors shut in case the workers trying to flee a fire might bring clothing with them -- seems just about right. Mid-tier, early career orthodontist? Tech industry middle-manager on his way up the ladder? Less attractive trophy wife trying to shed mommy mobile image while picking up Taylor and Jayden?
So who’s the target audience? It’s not families, because six or seven human beings need more than 10 feet of cargo space. I seriously doubt anyone’s taking an expensive Lexus off-roading. So who remains? I’d say this is probably a fashion statement for people who want to look large and in charge, want a luxury interior, and are willing to overlook the dismal MPG and cost of premium fuel.
"Synthetic cowhide"? I'll keep en eye out for synthetic cows out in the fields...
They're easy to spot, generally grazing on AstroTurf near the artificial Christmas tree farm.
Yes, Tom. Lincoln should build a luxury SUV based on the Bronco platform. Call it a Mountaineer. And give it a solid roof. None of this kid removable roof stuff. Great review, and my hard earned dollars would probably go to a high-trim Landcruiser. The V6 is well suited in the Sequoia and LX but probably not needed in this version of the platform. The 4-cylinder powertrain is almost as powerful and saves weight. And a teeny bit of fuel. And you would be less afraid to knock it around a little.
If they controlled the cost of the hybrid it would be more appealing otherwise its an updated dinosaur that will have a limited audience
I don’t think this new GX cargo room will fit at least the grocery bags or small carry on luggages with 3rd rows up in case if I have to take 6-7 people to the airport. It’s about the same as old GX and even gas consumption! That said I don’t want much bigger suv or mini van! Lexus should listen to some people complained about the old GX no room at all behinds 3rd row seats! I think the MDX at least have a little more room behind 3rd rows even it’s not that much longer in length.
Wow
This glut of GX550 reviews is bloody ridiculous. Maybe one of y'all CZcamsrs should change it up a bit?!
7:20 Mic drop moment. 17 mpg ... AND a $70k sticker ... errr .... sure ..
The wheel design is stupid but I like the rest and the more masculine blocky style. All models should have leather, that is ridiculous to put vinyl in this.
No subcription services please. The Japanese guy said 5 words, translator said 200 words 😅😆
Because I shortened the engineer figuring you wouldn't want to listen to the Japanese. You're welcome.
Just before everyone start crying about the price, I would like to point out, that here in the European Union, we get a midgrade Highlander Hybrid for the equivalent of $70K 😂 i am not gonna even start about the germans' prices...
Yes, cars are (relatively) inexpensive in the US.
I was going to be one of the 30 thousand, but I changed my mind, and I don't like the way TX looks
GX is a Beautiful car, but I'll pass because it's missing:
1. Third row seats don't have enough room. Why not give it the same third row seats as the TX
2. When third row seats are up, there is not enough cargo room.... look at TX as an example. It has 20 cubic feet
3. Hate the bump in the center seat
4. Toyota Sequoia has more luxury material than GX, I feel like I'm being cheated
5. KDSS should be on all trims
Simply put, unibody construction (TX) is a superior platform for maximizing space. Body on frame (GX) is less so. That said, GM managed to carve out much more room in its BOF SUVs than Toyota..
Love everything except body on frame drawbacks and the cheap looking seats.
Wind noise at 70 mph not for me,I’m done I’m out, Come on Lexus. You can do better.
