Elena in the beginning only saw the bad in damon and when she finally realized her feelings for him, that became her person. Literally her soulmate. i think this episode was why damon gets so much of a pass with some of us. we can see hes just a guy thats been rejected way too many times, hes depressed, bitter and just wants love. his own brother for a time even turned on him but least when elena chose him she never looked back and never played games when she embraced that love.
Literally cause as soon as Elena chose him (and he didn’t know about the sire bond), he was just so genuinely happy and loving Also if that happened with Katherine at the very start, or he found someone else to replace the feelings, he never would’ve done all the horrible things he did

After the first turn the only one who planned on ruining the others existence was Damon in 1800s onwards and though he wanted to die he easily could have even after turning. He didn't have to stay a vampire at all and definitely didn't have to go on killing. It was his choice but he justified his anger really about Katherine by blaming his brother and left him. I remember the times when Stefan was mad at Damon, (well deserved) but he always came back no matter what Damon did. Stefan didn't need to make him the bad guy, he was the bad guy in those situations, but He never stopped fighting for Damon's humanity, even when he didn't deserve it.
Damon is always misunderstood. He's not a villain, he only has a broken heart, which is understandable. Elena is his second half, which reunites the heart
He literally killed Lexi for no legitimate reason. Stefan was still mourning Lexi in season 4, and Lexi still helped him from the grave during his darkest moment. Damon kill humans because they see them as beneath him. That’s not understandable at all.

I think a lot of people loved Damon because of how much he wanted to be loved but honestly human and vampire Damon was so similar, funny, crazy and they both had there own way of caring for others. Damon wasn't bad at all he was just a victim who suffered alot when his mom faked her death then trying to protect his baby bro from his evil father and then getting played by Katherine for whom he wanted to become a vampire for he wanted to die for whom he searched for 145 years He was like a small kid who wanted to be loved thankgod elena saw his inner self and fell for him and accepted him the way he was which helped him in becoming the person he was before 🥺❣️❣️❣️
Katherine did love him, in her way. She made Stefan care enough to save Damon's life, even though it meanshe would have to go back to running from Klaus. She just wasn't in love with Damon. In the end, I think Katherine losing her daughter and getting dragged into hell, is what really pushed her over the edge to total evil. She was never fully evil before. Like Stefan said, she was just a 17 year old girl, it wasn't her fault what happened back then. If she never loved Damon, she'd never have fed him her blood to begin with. I think she was a lot like Elena before she was banished by her family and then everything after. Losing her daughter was the final straw for her, not hell, but Losing her daughter. I like to think that after hell was destroyed, the souls there found peace too, eventually. Even Katherine. As for Damon, I saw the humanity in him very early on in the series, even when he tried to hide it, you could see the glimmers of humanity in him. When Elena told him she knew what happened with their ex (before she knew they were vampires), you could see a flimmer of pain in his eyes. His rage at Stefan, well, you don't feel rage if you don't feel anything. Even when Vicki died and Elena slapped him, you could see her words affected him. It's why he offered to do the compulsion on Jeremy. Even though he still hated Stefan for making him turn, he was enraged at the tomb vampires hurting him and willing to die to save him. His humanity showed long before this scene. I think that's why he quickly became a favourite of mine. He had such complex layers and Ian did such a marvellous job at playing him.

I don't know if Julie instructed Nina to do so or did the actress did it herself, even if it was done on purpouse, but the way Nina shifts into Elena's stance when she is rejecting Damon really ads up to pain Damon feels right now. There is a clear difference between Kat and Elena, unless they are impersonating eachother and yet here Katherine shifts everything in her posture to resemble Elena, just so Damon is hurted even more, as if both girls are rejecting him in the same time.
i dont make edits like this but i would have started it when damon says "this could be a our defining moment" then cut to the damon & elena scene and when that scene ended you could have done a back to back of damon's face being crushed. other than that i enjoyed the edit because i related to damon's emotions and the look in face from both of those scene makes me shed a tear

At the end of the day, Katherine was a lonely girl, running from a monster who wanted to kill her, she was in love with Elijah, but she couldn't have him, and she fell in love with Stefan who didn't reciprocate her. Her life was miserable. At least she had Damon's love.
Her love (or lack thereof) for Damon is so inconsistent in this show. In flashbacks and later seasons we see that she clearly has feelings for Damon but in certain moments like this she acts like she never cared about him and actually tries to kill him several times. What makes me sad though is that he loved her more than Stephan ever did but she loved Stephan more than she loved Damon.
