Going Undercover in London’s Brothels | Investigators

  • Sex slavery in London is on the rise. A sophisticated network of human trafficking stretches from Eastern Europe right into the heart of the most expensive postcode in London: Mayfair.
These high-class brothels are controlled by Albanian gangs who force women into prostitution against their will, take all the profits and effectively turn them into sex slaves. Famous politicians, footballers and business tycoons are among the clientele, paying up to £300 an hour for sex and cocaine, fuelling the industry to grow.
After being approached by a pimp on a night out, investigative journalist Tam Hussein then teamed up with ITV News correspondent Lucy Watson to expose the entire operation. Tam went undercover into a brothel to show exactly how they operate, to confirm that the women are there against their will - and to expose how this is happening in plain sight across the streets of London.

I’m Canadian. In 2005, I was 21 and living in the South of France after uni grad, a man approached me while I was alone at the beach. He wasn’t creepy and he talked to me at least 30 mins. Finally, he revealed that he had recently “won the lotto” and wanted to give some of his winnings 800 Euro, to nice young ppl after his original plan of donating to the local charity was ruined after he saw the youth outside drinking. I was utterly naive and felt flattered. I told him repeatedly tho, I couldn’t take money destined for charity and that if I needed money, I’d ask my parents. He was so very insistent and eventually asked if I was scared and not to be because his wife was back at their van too (where I was to go get the cash).
Well. I’m around to write this comment (now 38) but I have to say, when I called my parents that night, so pleased that someone thought I was such a nice girl, I deserved to be given money, they FREAKED out and told me he was probably a human trafficker.
Thank God I came from a middle class household with sufficient money and a good job working for the French gov. So many girls, who were poorer would have taken the bait out of genuine need for money.
Edit: Some folks have interpreted from my story that I was 100% naive back then. Though broad day light sex trafficker grooming was not on my radar, I was super safety conscious in other ways. Way more so than all the girls I knew. Things I was doing to stay safe:
    1) Never sharing drinks and walking around bars and parties covering the top of my cup, always. (To avoid being drugged). I seriously looked like a weirdo walking and dancing with cup 100% covered.
    2) Only walking in well lit areas.
    3) Never getting drunk because that would allow anyone to take advantage of me.
    4) Avoiding areas where creepy men congregated. There where a couple streets I had to pass to get to work and there were a bunch of creepy Algerian men who loitered around. I started covering my hair to present as a Muslim woman, so that they would leave me alone.
    5) Never trusted any men we met at bars or discos. I constantly counselled the other girls not to go make out with these guys they’d meet.
    6) Walked at night with my keys in my fist so that if I had to hit someone, I could stab them in the eyes with my keys.
    7) Learned self defence to be able to get away from an attacker.
    8) Walked around with a “don’t mess with me”, strong energy. I learned from Oprah that kidnappers go for the easiest victims so exuding tough energy makes you less likely to be grabbed.
My point is that even for a girl following all the safety rules, I was still not expecting what he did. Nobody was talking about sex trafficking 15 years ago. Still, I tell ppl this story all the time so they can tell their loved ones. Ppl don’t assume it plays out this innocently, which is the beauty of the scam!

I've never actually said this before to anyone but I was in-between relationships for a bit too long so visited a prostitute in London and it was the most tragic experience of my life. The poor girl had "King Darius" tattooed on her chest which I assumed was her pimp. She was Eastern European and absolutely beautiful but so sad, you can tell she's seen and been through so much despite her being only 19/20. She'd definitely been trafficked and I couldn't go through with sex, instead just asking for a quick back massage before leaving and she actually seemed thrilled to do it for a change. When I left she shot me this look with her eyes that I can still see in my mind to this day. It was like saying "help me" but then she looked down and closed the door. I still think about that girl from time to time and get sad, I highly doubt she's in a good place.
Once I left I bought a large bottle of gin, got really drunk and blacked out. Sad evening for all involved. They need to decriminalise prostitution but ban brothels and pimps. Let the escorts take control of the industry and govern their own bodies while looking out for eachother.

Getting sucked into being a sex slave doesn’t just happen to naive or ignorant foreigners. My girlfriend from high school was very pretty and was a cheerleader in college and even for an NFL team. While she was cheerleading in the NFL she met a man who she thought she was dating but really he was just getting her hooked on drugs (they’d go out drinking and he spiked her drink then got her to take drugs while she was loopy). After a couple weeks he turned her into a “high class escort”. She slept with at least 5 men a day at $1,000 a pop which she saw none of. The only compensation she received were the expensive clothes purses & jewelry she needed to pull off the look needed to attract wealthy men. Sadly she went through this for almost 5 years. The only thing that got her out of it was meeting and falling in love with one of her customers who she’s now married to. She makes it look like she’s really happy and living the life of her dreams because her husband is wealthy and she can have anything she wants but I suspect she’s still traumatized and living in that mindset bc she’s married to someone who used to be a “customer” and who’d pay her pimp to sleep with her several times a week. I don’t know what I can do for her or if she even needs me to do anything for her but whenever I think about what she’s been through I feel sick and I can’t help but look at her husband as someone who victimized her and as someone who is very slimy and amoral. He’s a well known businessman where I live and has a lot of money and power and claims to be Christian and a crime fighter etc. but he does drugs and hires escorts on a regular basis. No, it does not make sense, unless you see it as some kind of zero sum 4D moral chess game. The Nordic model has proven time and time again to be a terrible policy for sex workers. It means they are stuck with clients who are fine breaking the law, maintains them in a legal grey area, maintains all the stigma against sex work and sex workers(which is often the #1 issue for sex workers if you actually are interested in talking to them rather than using them as a moral pawn), and still puts them under heavy legal and criminal scrutiny(a pretty big deal when a lot of the people who assault sex workers are cops rather than clients).

They said something in the end about how this story might help criminalize the purchasing of sex, basically putting men in prison for consensual sex with liberated sex workers, as though that has any relevance to sex trafficking. But running brothels and human trafficking, the activities depicted in the story, are already illegal in the UK. The police could act immediately and shut these operations down by enforcing the laws already on the books. Clearly, there don't need to be new laws - the government needs to enforce the ones that already exist. Isn't it obvious the people running these operations are criminals who will continue to get away with crimes because their clients include powerful people, who are by definition above the law? Legalising prostitution would free these women up to go to authorities without fear of being imprisoned and nothing happening to the culprit. If you make prostitution legal and keep trafficking illegal it makes it a lot easier for people to go to the authorities. But then there’s always the chase the police will still do nothing. Think about it - when everyone who is buying sex is willing to commit a crime doing it, what kind of customers are sex workers able to choose from? Listen to the experiences of sex workers in countries with that model and try to let go of the illusion that this will fo anything to help victims of sex trafficking and abuse.

There are a ton more documentary out there on stuff like this, you just gotta find them right here on youtube. Just look up female slave sex trafficking. It's absolutely horrendous. It's hard to believe that in today's age people are still being sold like this all the way down to little girls all around the world. These girls are typically from poorer places like the Romanian neighborhoods where most of these women in London are coming from and incur debt from these pimps which they have to pay off like the investigator woman in the video pointed out. It's a mental and physical struggle for a lot of these women who get tortured by involuntarily accepting to do this and literally have their lives on the line doing this. It's very sickening. This industry is over a billion dollars worth by the way. Who the heck do you think is contributing to an industry worth this much. Say no more, a lot of the wealthy corrupt individuals of society and how do you get them to account for this? Even the police sometimes has a difficult time getting involved. Anyways short rant there but, yeah it won't change anytime soon unless something is done about it.

In Australia, most states have some sort of regulation for sex work. We’re currently lobbying for the decriminalisation of sex work in Queensland. Currently, independent workers can’t work in pairs (which puts them at significant risk of violence). It’s absolutely absurd and isolates the workers. It’s also common/legal for police to entrap a sex worker by asking for natural services and prosecute them if they don’t give the exact right answer (sex without a condom). Which is completely wrong, assuming a sex worker won’t take responsible measures in her occupation is completely ignorant. Brothels in Queensland are government regulated, all the workers are tested regularly and provided security, clean/stocked working rooms & administrative support. A lot of workers in these venues pay half their wage to the brothels just to be kept safe and everything is taxed. Insinuating sex workers aren’t contributing and don’t deserve protection under the law is abhorrent.
