  • A day with my Ricoh GRIIIx (Street Photography + Video Samples)
Finally picked up my new street photography camera. The Ricoh GRIIIx . I have been a long time Fujifilm user for street photography. And I always wanna try out the Ricoh camera. But 28mm lens has never been my favourite. I’m so used to the X100V 35mm lens. But when the Ricoh announced the GRIIIx with a 40mm lens. I was like, Yep this is it. So I went to Melbourne early this month for a wedding shoot. And I did the Canon R5C 8K Cinematic Video. And because I only stayed in Melbourne for 2 days. And I have spent almost all my time for the R5C video. So I only had a few hours to make the Ricoh GRIIIx video.
Top trip shooting videos with the camera
So yes, you might say I’m crazy. Ricoh GRIIIx isn’t designed for video shooting. And yes I know the video quality is horrible. It doesn’t shoot 4K, 10Bit or high bitrate. And its not just that. The video has crazy aliasing and moire. The overall image is very soft. And the worse thing is, the camera doesn’t let you use Manual Mode. You can’t set the f-stop, shutter speed that you want. So I don’t recommend people to use this camera for video at all. I would say the iPhone takes so much better video.
But let say if you only have your GRIIIx with you. There are some little tips to make your video slightly better.
So first thing you might think is, lets set the camera to 60p and slow it down to 24p to get the cinematic feel. Nope. Don’t use 60p. Its super soft and the aliasing is double. I think there is something to do with the bitrate. I’m assuming 24p and 60p uses the same bitrate. So each frame shares less data. So better keep it at 24p.
Second, turn off your 3 Axis IBIS. Yea, the IBIS does give you smoother footage. But when you trying to do some handheld shots. The jumps around a lot. So better to turn it off.
Third, don’t use the auto focus. Set your focus point and just leave it. Because the camera hunting so much to find the focus. It ruins your video.
Fourth, use a tripod. It might be a bit boring for the shot. But you get the best result.
Fifth, try not to shoot infinity. Focus the subject more. The video quality reminds me the 5D Mark II back in the days. The footage looks more like 720p to me and upscaling to 1080p. So when you shoot the subject that really far away. It looks extremely soft. But if you just focus on a macro stuff for example. The footage would look a lot better.
Sixth, set your custom picture profile. Like turn down the saturation, Hue and contrast. And go -4 for the sharpness.
Then the last thing is, add the sharpness in post and colour grade your footage to get more cinematic look.
I’m hoping the next GRIV, Ricoh really focus little bit more on the video side. As the GRIIIx is an awesome camera. You can switch on the ND filter, Peaking mode, and Macro mode. It can be very useful for video.
Over all, the Ricoh GRIIIx is my new favourite street camera. Super compact size, easy to carry out. Crazy sharp images in every aperture.

Thanks for watching, yea I don’t normally do street photography video. Just because I bought the Ricoh GRIIIx for my little trip. But the video quality isn’t worth making a video. That’s why I did something different 😉☺️

Nice 👍 The video quality seems decent. Does it let you lock the exposure? I had a GR Digital around 15 years ago and loved that camera, until the retractable lens locked up and killed it.

Thanks. It looks alright if you set it on a tripod and turn off all the sharpness, and use manual focus. But still full auto when shooting video unfortunately. As soon as a guy walk pass the camera with a black T-shirt. The exposure will change straight away. It’s not reliable. But for the photo side, loved the camera so much ☺️

    This or Sony a6000?

I would say the Ricoh GRIIIx if you don’t mind a fixed lens. But if it’s out of your budget, the Sony a6000 is also a very good camera ☺️
