I think the moral of the story is that we need to start making and distributing our own movies.

@@jamalvines2133 I don’t believe Blacks aren’t “allowed” to establish distribution channels. I believe we don’t pursue distribution as a business the way we pursue acting and directing. Distribution of our own movies is a lucrative opportunity for us if we are wiling to learn what it involves. I would LOVE to invest in a Black distribution organization that is well thought out & connected. Let’s stop thinking about THEY & think more about US☺️

Hello, to the ReelBlack family. In poring over the comments posted by our viewers I have not seen any mention of the Cuffee character in THTF. Many of the viewers may have missed the part of the film where Cuffee, the character portrayed by Daniel Deadwyler, is revealed as Cathay Williams. Cathay Williams is a historical figure who enlisted in the US army posing as a man under the name of William Cathay. She was the only woman to have been a buffalo soldier. Her story is a fascinating one. The Mulan film comes to mind when I think about her story. Check it out.

It was a western fantasy...made for the youngsters. I had a few problems with the film, because I wanted to see an authentic Western with these legendary figures. It was a stylish project, that felt like a graphic novel in parts....but black folk had work, so that’s good.

    • @fullcircleessentials
      @fullcircleessentials Před 2 lety +6

Yes, this film was fantasy and fiction but the question I have for you is why can't we have more black fantasy/films? How often lately do we see a black fantasy film. I'm happy and agree that these particular well known actors received work. You have to look at the bigger picture. From the outside looking in and vise sersa pertaining to black actors working. From the directors, producers, writers, actors and money put behind this film (THE MESSAGE).
I've been in the presence of many black (movers/shakers) in the industry. That includes Regina King (twice as a teenager and adult). Blacks are always stereotyped and seen as a joke. Never taken seriously. Do you think thats a problem?
Non-blacks put out plenty of crap on a regular basis. In the publics eye (white mivies/actors) are seen and portray heros, killers, saints, wealthy and every fantasy you can imagine. People of all nationalities pay money and watch these films (including the crappie white films). I almost forgot the distribution of these crappie films around the world. Some of our black films don't get that far unless the actors are extremely famous.. Do you realize how hard it is for a black actor to get an Emmy,, Grammy award? So getting a Nickelodeon/MTV award is the best we can get!? My point is that we are our worst critics. Meaning we look for things to be wrong with our own. From creativity, ideas, imagination and much more. We are definitely our worst enemies. Yet we aren't producing black films in mass. Why? Maybe because some of us don't think it's possible. Is it money!? I doubt it. Haven't we seen anough slave/gangsta movies? The bottom it's FEAR. I bet money if this movie was non fiction there would still be major critiques. No, this wasn't the perfect BLACK WESTERN FILM but for those who put in the REAL work to get it to the audience (blacks, whites, and others) it was a good job. That's my opinion. I've come to the conclusion that the most criticism comes from the ones that aren't doing anything to make a difference. So can you elaborate and or explain your likes/dislikes with this film and what you would've done differently?
At the end of the day everyone's a critic.

As if their fantasy and fiction is more real and believable 😂. Its like the whitemans ice is colder!

Django, the protagonist, did not kill Candie. Django had to have an enabler, Schultz, who killed the plantation owner. In fact, the Django character would not have killed anyone except for this co-star freeing him and being the authority behind Django's actions.
Very thankful for this analysis. It represents "the proper way" to watch a Black-facing film in White supremacy culture, i.e., made with White capital (as is nearly all film, White director notwithstanding).

Mr Woods perspective is always spot on! I was uncomfortable with the amount of Black carnage in the movie. Even for a western, I expect violence but not just for the sake of shock value. It's something about those foreign films and directors. They use Black trauma and torture as a theme rather than telling a complete humanizing story. "Twelve Years A Slave" is a prime example.

I find many of your reviews edifying. One of the big problems black folks have in evaluating black films. Is that we have a hunger and thirst for product in whatever form it’s served in.
We will accept trash as is. In addition to our miseducation and misunderstanding. Is many of these films are the vision of the creators and it’s financial underpinnings.
I don’t expect much from a commercial film. Independent or films that are debuted away from the commercial mainstream sometimes lay hidden in plain sight. With a lot more complexities and weaving of the structures of white supremacy and white fragility interspersed within the film.
You guys need to review the film, “Passing”.
I found that much more intriguing. Based on a book about the topic. Thank you Charles for your brilliant and often difficult perspectives to open up minds as to the discrepancies of the film industry and how it confines black films.

I really appreciated this discussion about tricknology. It was very well done. I haven't seen the movie under discussion in this video, but I did finally see Black Panther in 2020 (I was going through severe issues at the time it originally came out, and so missed it in 2018), and was immediately aware of all of the types of tricknology that you described in that film. I was disgusted by all of the following: 1) That the person who actually wanted to fight for the liberation of his people (Killmonger) was made into a disruptive villain; 2) That the Wakandans were fierce warriors who refused to use that ferocity on anybody but themselves; and 3) that their ally, of all people, was a CIA agent, when we know full well that the CIA has had the most destructive role in liberation and independence movements in Africa and the US. I was very offended by that, and I'm sure people like Patrice Lumumba, among many others, would be as well.

You have an extraordinary way with words (I still haven't forgotten that marvelous quote about the "power of the press"), so it would be my privilege if you did. I totally see your points about tricknology: they never allow us to be depicted as defeating them, or using violence effectively. "Killmonger's" villanization was, to me, a representation of the U.S.'s response to the Black Panther's encouragement for us to pick up arms to defend ourselves. That's exactly what Killmonger was encouraging the Wakandans to do for their people in the diaspora. Instead, the film made him look evil for it, and sanctified those who chose pacifism and nonviolence. When I finally saw the film, I was so dismayed by how so many of us had been duped.
