The entire point of Nnoitra's character is that he doesn't need to be saved. Nel called him a beast because he still has mentality of the hollow which is "Kill or be killed".
In his perception, if you're stronger than him, you go for the kill since that's the way hollows become stronger. Trying to show pity or honor doesn't work - he doesn't understand such things and finds them meaningless.
He considers Nel to be weak because she didn't kill him when she had a chance and kept denying him his death, eventually leading to him finding a way to strike her down and surpass her. All her words about reason doesn't matter to him because, let's be honest, they were meaningless after all, since Nel is the one who eventually got her head split open.
And Kenpachi (another beast) was the only one who actually understood what Nnoitra wanted and granted him death despite a clearly big gap in their strength.
Yeah, this. Also, given the nature of Hueco Mundo, being killed could be seen as a mercy.

The fastest and easiest way to understand Nnoitra's character is that he has an inferiority complex. Everything he does stems from the fact that he feels everyone is looking down on him. That's why he keeps telling himself he's the strongest; he needs the assurance.
And what makes an inferiority complex so crippling is that no matter how good you are, you never believe it. Nnoitra is the 5th Espada, and almost killed Kenpachi. That makes him unbelievably strong, but he just can't see himself that way because of his crippling self-doubt. All he can do is act out.

I think Nnoitora didn't kill Chad because no one would've respected him for it. In his eyes, Chad was so weak, that killing him would've made Nnoitora look weak for bothering with it. If that makes sense, I don't how else to describe it.
Or perhaps he was confident that the blow he landed on Chad would cause Chad to die from blood loss. I don't think that'd be uncharacteristic of Nnoitra, given his need to feel superior to others.

@@zeroskaterz92 You're not really contradicting what I'm saying here. When Nnoitra first struck Chad, Chad was bleeding out. Then Nnoitra and Tesla left as Chad continued to bleed. Sure, he might have felt that Chad was weak, and that doesn't contradict what I said about his need to feel superior to others, because that would be an example of him feeling superior to Chad.

Chad was bleeding from Nnoitra's inflicted wound when he got back up and tried to attack Nnoitra again. Are you going to suggest that Nnoitra didn't notice that Chad was bleeding out? Surely, you're not going to suggest to me that Nnoitra expected Chad to survive from that wound.

Here is a very interesting collection (of several youtube comments and personal thoughts) which analyzes the character of Nnoitra as well as its relationship with Nel. Good reading ;)
Nnoitra is a character that I think can only really be appreciated on rewatches of the show. He's a horrible, sexist monster, but he's a monster fueled by a crippling inferiority complex born from people constantly pitying him. Nel herself is partially responsible for shaping Nnoitra into the monster he is. From the beginning(flashback) we see that Nnoitra is utterly obsessed with nelliel opinion of him. Nnoitra had fallen so deep into despair that one of his coping mechanisms was that he wanted Nelliel to acknowledge him as a warrior. When nelliel was around he would kill all hollows no matter the power and even killed an adjuchas begging for his life. But even then, this only sets him into deeper depression. He still feels inferior to Nel as she constantly mocks him. Nel destroys all his ways of coping with his despair. Nnoitra's self-worth is something she doesn’t understand, making him feel worthless. You see she mocks him but not as a way to hurt him. She thinks it would make him want to become like her manipulating his pride. But ultimately she’s making him worse and worse, driving him into an animal seeking her validation for self worth. He wants to surpass her as a way to be acknowledged as a warrior. But if that was the case, then why didn’t he kill her? When Szayel and him crack her skull open, why does he end her life ? It’s because that’s not what he seeks. It was at this moment where he cut ties from his past. Killing her would not give him the validation that he seeks. As I explained for such a being with zero self worth, this isn’t it. This isn’t changing what Nel thinks of him. Nel’s toxic effect on him led him to this decision. But ultimately this wasn’t what he would have wanted. As he’s free of her, he can finally improve on his own and get healthier. But of course he still wants to surpass her next time. He doesn’t mind dying to Nel as long as she views him as a warrior. You see when nnoitra is fighting chad he spares chad and I forgot what he says but he says something indicating that he wouldn’t get anything from destroying a small fry. This indicates that he’s evolved and gotten healthier. In the flashback, he would kill every being no matter their power craving validation. This would utterly put him further into despair making him despite himself as his problem is from within himself but also from Nel as his digression into further despair stems from their toxic relationship. That’s why his scene with Chad indicated some sort of progression now that Nel is gone. And also it’s important to note that he now has someone who cares deeply for him. That’s Tesla. We also know that Nnoitra cares for Tesla a bit because he showed emotion right before his death. Fast forward to his fight with Nel he’s happy that Nel is using her sword and ready to kill him as if acknowledging him as a warrior. He’s finally strong enough for her to use her sword against him. Everything he’s done so far was for this moment. To him, he had finally gotten her validation. Unlike in the past where he says he hates and despises her, now he is in the same position as he is now. Knees on the floor with Nel starting down on him. Except this time she’s releasing her sword to kill him. What he ultimately desires. This is who he desired to die in battle too. Not kenpachi. This is until Nel spares his life. She says “be at ease, I will not take your life”. You can imagine how nnoitra feels. He’s crushed and destroyed from this. She’s basically just robbed all his progression away from him and sunk him into despair even further. Everything he’s worked for to finally achieve her approval is crushed as she’s basically just told him he’s still a child. And then even after all this, she returns to her child state. After all this, he even loses the chance to battle her again, and earn her approval. He wanted to die by her. He lost it all. What devastating moments these are for him. Obviously this doesn't excuse his terrible actions or the fact that he was an asshole from the start, but he's a much more complex character than people give him credit for. He's not just an Arrancar version of Kenpachi, he's much more nuanced than that given how little screen time he actually has. He's a bitter, wounded person that covers up his insecurities with a vile exterior. The short flashbacks we get really show us how crippling his inferiority complex is and how his despair has driven him too long for death in battle. The way Kubo writes his characters is really unique in that he mostly doesn't reveal very much about that character but wants us to figure it out with the little info that he gave us.

I think Nnoitra actually does like to fight, but he also really doesn't like to lose. To me, he's like Vegeta in that regard. Vegeta likes to fight...but he also REALLY hates to lose. They both like to fight and feel superior doing so.

He doesn't hate losing, despite doing his best to achieve victory, he hates when his opponents look down on him and deny him his wish.
@@Prushinthespirit Sure, he says that, but he also gets tilted when he loses or senses that someone is challenging his perceived superior position. He insisted more than once that he was the strongest, and that Kenpachi can't cut him, but he got frustrated and impatient with Kenpachi because Kenpachi started cutting through his Hierro and gaining increasing advantages over him, and because Kenpachi wasn't going down, no matter how many times he cut that guy up. A then-hypothetical loss to Kenpachi would suggest to him that he's the inferior combatant, and he doesn't like that. He doesn't like losing because it makes him feel inferior.
@@kmgyening He only gets titled when he loses because for him, lose = die. That's why he's mad when his opponent doesn't kill him when he lose the fight.
He's similar to Ikakku before Zaraki met him. He prefer to die when he lose rather than be alive in shame.
The difference between Nnoitra and Ikakku is the person who beat them. Zaraki gave a good speech that motivates Ikakku to stay alive and get stronger while Nel just mocked Nnoitra for being weak.
@@zeroskaterz92 That's what I was going to say, Nnoitora does enjoy fighting but for him winning is more important than his life. Kenpachi on the other hands likes fighting so much that he doesn't even care if he loses as long as he is still capable to fight again, he doesn't resent Ichigo for "defeating" him like Nnoitora resents Neliel for not killing him when he was defeated. For Nnoitora losing = death, for Kenpachi losing = get stronger and fight again to get even more fun
@@zeroskaterz92 For Nnoitra, lose might = death, but I'm saying it also = feeling of inferiority that he doesn't like. The two things are not mutually exclusive. His reactions while fighting Kenpachi demonstrate that he doesn't like losing in the first place.
People talk about how Aizen stopped Ichigo's theme with a finger, but no one talk about how Kenpachi stopped Nnoitora's theme with a smile
In my opinion, it isn't that he just stopped the theme, it's that he then proceeds to try and cut him in half at the waist with said finger, and acts disappointed when it doesn't work.
Plus, Number One is like... The most iconic character theme, or one of the most, in all of anime in spite of that moment, so the moment ranks higher off that as well.
By comparison... He has a theme? It must be so lack luster that I never once picked up on it.

But he cannot accept that it is because she believes him to be weak and then he forced whatever reason he could to say that he hated her and it ended in because a woman can't be stronger... He made it inside his brain to be something way less personal that it was because he rejected the fact that he was weak...
Kubo's set up for the espada beyond just similar style or ability.
9th espada died against someone much weaker than him despite being the one who technically having the most long term potential.
8th espada dies in disgrace of his position, invalidated by a greater intellect and forced to suffer just like those he tormented.
7th espada died to a man bound by duty to another, as someone who themselves were staunchly loyal and duty bound yet claim duty to others is unjustified without authority(protecting humans).
6th espada loses to someone who view him as an equal rather than someone below them or putting him on a pedestal, he is understood by his opponent and lives only to then be attacked by an "ally" while weakened much like a jungle analogy inline with his concept of being its king.
5th espada dies against what he believed himself to be, a warrior who thrived on battle, constantly trying to reassure himself only to fall in front of the one person who ever showed him mercy.
Fun fact the kids who work with urahara are basically like Nemu but for some reason the anime doesn't talk about it

The Most crazy thing I saw happen in Bleach is when Kenpachi Just put his second hand on his Sword and just Ended the fight, That just showed how insanely strong and how much potential Kenpachi has, far more than Ichigo.
Actually on a fundamental level Ichigo has more potential, Kenpachi himself however is a unique study. What’s important to know though is neither of them were at their peak when they fought and the outcome was more of a draw.

Shunshinrika is the name of inoues flowers/hair clip thingies... Each fairy has a name but that is their name as a weapon or in general... Then she also has the names of each ability of which she has 3... The attack the defense and the healing.. and Ichigo was surprised because her healing acted as a barrier/wall instead of just healing
Chad's case is weird, because he attempts to kill Grimmjow who just got defeated by Ichigo.
I personally think it had a bit to do with Tesla's interference making him not want to fight anymore.
The more I think about it, the weirder it is. Sometimes Kubo writes a character but doesn't fully realize them before he introduces them to the plot. See: Gin tying up Kenpachi and carrying him away, Renji acting like a total jerk in the first meeting but then being a "I don't hit women" kind of guy during Fullbring.
Him not killing Chad is a very out of character move.

The way I see Nnoitra’s actions is that of a bully. Since he was able to beat Chad easily enough, when he was seemingly perfectly fine, he didn’t see any point in killing him. He didn’t see him as a threat. With Ichigo and Nel, even Grimmjow, however, they weren’t up to full power when he picks a fight with them. In the past, he’d pick fights with Nel, but probably because he knew she would refuse or wouldn’t kill him in the end. When he got tired of losing and taking hits to his pride, he jumped her friends and then her. Then, against Kenpachi, who he couldn’t gain any kind of advantage against, even with more arms and weapons, you see him crumble against someone who could fight back.

Y’all don’t get nel true intentions she was really trying to change him. She was being tough on him trying to get him to humble himself. He got new powers and was bullying and miss using it abilities for killing. nel was trying to get him to be more appreciative and humble. When he looked at her for the last time and she said his name back she feeling for him and was saddened by it she never wanted him to die. But in that moment he realized as well what nel intentions was before he died.
Nnoitora is extremely suicidal so he doesn't like the fact Nel spares him

Nemu was not faking it from the very beginning... It's just that when Kurotsuchi basically told her to stop "hurting" she HAD to stand up... There was no option of telling her I can't...
Mayuri on the other hand was not faking the pain and he was being hurt and the attacks did damage him... He was faking being ok for the sake of humiliating pink haired guy on purpose... He did let him land in most of the attacks on purpose while he prepared though I. Order to humiliate him rather than have them think he avoided them because he was cautious

I think it would have been funnier if he flipped Nel off (with ALL of his might) as she watched him fall and die. Like, I wish Kubo would have just let him have that final, spiteful "f**k you" before he died.
I think it's the opposite. He would ask for death whenever he lost a fight because that's a hollow's instinct that he kept while the other Espada disregarded it. Another instinct of his is to kill everything weaker than me. Those two instincts together made for a reality where he constantly had to look for a fight and couldn't complain if he died because of it, quite the opposite of crying whenever smoke came about.
But he didn’t fuck around he got the exact fight he wanted the same thing he wanted from Nel but never got.

.. got into Bankai... Learned how to control his mask... And kenpachi at this very moment is still stronger than him... So again how did he beat kenpachi? No amount of distraction, rustiness of his strength, or holding back will ever make sense of that considering his personality... I can say sure whatever that is what the creator wanted and kenpachi just suddenly was stronger because the audience thought him one of the coolest... But it still won't make sense... I will just roll with it anyway because it is just one of the few actual plot holes despite people trying to force themselves to believe those justifications are enough... He could have had him get hurt by Ichigo and say he was done with the fight for now and come back again later, or he could have left Ichigo to die knowing he actually would to have home come at him stronger... But he would not have him win on purpose even less so lost naturally if this was his level...

Kenpachi was a LOT stronger than Soul Society Ichigo. Heck, he's even stronger than Bankai + Hollow Mask Ichigo.
There were very specific conditions that Ichigo needed to defeat Kenpachi. A lot of it is explained in later arcs.
