This song was always sad to me. I got the vibe that the game was saying goodbye to you as you moved on with your life. You always thought the game was fun, but the game is staying in a static life whereas your life moves on to bigger and better things. The credits song screams "Don't forget about me." to the player, and comforts the player with a warm, "I'll be here when you're ready to play me again." :')
This is EXACTLY how I've felt since I heard it. Like nostalgia even though it was fresh. I've ALWAYS loved it. I'm about to be thirty two and have played it since it came out as one of my first ever games I owned as a kid. I still play it and now even play with my daughter(s). It's a special game and a special track to me.
Brooooo. 😢😮 my thoughts exactly I don't want my childhood to leave and it will never leave me. Because deep down without this game alone Who would of thought MK64 would leave such a memorable memory growing up. And by saying that I'll continue to comeback to this classic till the end of time. ❤
Never got to play Mario Kart 64, but even without the nostalgia effect this song really is oddly emotional for a Mario Kart game. Those strings are simply godlike.
if you haven't heard it, look up MK7's Rainbow Road theme. right up there with this theme in my opinion. they know how to make good soundtracks for sure lol
Now this is an even bigger tear jerker now that Charles Martinet has retired from the roles of Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi a few decades sooner than I expected. Still, thank you dude for the voice work you've provided.
When you beat 150CC for your first time, you may have always heard this music before, but honestly there was no better prize for fighting through all of that to take first place. This music was the greatest gift Nintendo could have given us after a difficult, and fun game.
This melody is so beautifully haunting. I’ve never heard this song vanilla. Heck, I’m a Wii baby. But my throat tightens when this song reaches its chorus. It shows the true power of music, the ability to convey emotions, and to make someone feel something, even if they don’t have an attachment to the song. It’s stuff like this that annoys me when people say VGM isn’t real music.
I totally understand how you feel, I absolutely adore and listen to video game music all the time. It’s just something I can appreciate and really take in, and really just experience the music. Barely any the people I know love this music in the way I do
This song always brings a tear to my eyes. It did as a kid because I knew that I had beat the game, and it does now because of childhood, sitting down with my parents to play VS mode. I'd give my right kidney to spend one week in 1996 again just to play this freaking game alongside my 3 year old self. Even revisiting this game today just doesn't feel the same as it did playing it brand new back in '96.
I only just bought this game on the virtual console 2 years ago. But whenever I hear this song, it feels like I've been playing this game all my life. It's THAT beautiful. :')
I know exactly how you feel, but my childhood game was Mario Kart Wii. Even though I'm almost 16, I would LOVE to just sit by my 8 year old self and play.
This and Mario Kart DS's credits themes sound like a goodbye more than a celebration. It's likely relevant to why a lot feel like they want to cry or that they feel nostalgic while listening to this
Completely agree! This song emits a power and vibe much stronger than anything you'd expect from a Mario game. It's really lovely but damn it makes you feel too emotional for a go-karting game lol
I'm here to say that along with Yamauchi-san, Iwata-san joins him in being a fallen hero. Satoru Iwata was taken from us due to a form of cancer he has been fighting for a long time. So I'm sure many gamers out there will join me in saying thank you. Thank you for saving so many of us from being bullied as children, helping us cope with family issues and even death. Thank you for helping us form life long friendships due to your creations, hard work and wonderful vision you had for gamers everywhere. You gave us Mario Maker so we can possibly see what you have been doing all these years. Making games and bringing happiness to the world as your final project. "On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer." -Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President and CEO" Thank you Iwata-san for everything you have given us.
I hope everyone realizes how important this guy was to the video game industry. He brought gamers together, and was the reason the Wii and the DS, along with games like Earthbound, Kirby, and even Pokemon. R.I.P Iwata, and thank you for everything you did. #Thankyouiwata
I swear, Mario games always nail the credits. The one for Mario Kart 64, in which- need I remind you- you are in a Go Kart throwing bananas and ingesting mushrooms to win, has a fantastic credits theme.
I will organize a MK 64 tournament. In honor, and I repeat in honor of this great game. And I promise, I WILL WIN. It won't be a small shit tournament like some local area fucking shit stupid thing. No this will be huge. And. I. Will. WIN.
Always struck me how a happy, friendly game like MK64 had such a haunting, quite sad ending theme. Those synths on the "chorus".... loved this a as kid, now it just brings tears of nostalgia to my eyes. Thank you Nintendo.
This is a fantastic theme, but it sounds more like someone's actual ascent to heaven rather than the credits for a game about a plumber riding a go kart lol.
1997...I was 15... old times, old friends, that girl, those days will be in my heart forever along with this music and all those video games. Thanks a lot Nintendo. This music brings to me so many memories :')
After listening to this, I finally decided to play Mario Kart 64 and get gold on the cups I left the game back so many years ago as either incomplete, bronze or silver. Finishing 150cc Special Cup has never felt better.
man... playing this game as an adult today in 2016 on virtual console just doesn't feel the same as on the N64 and back in the 90s as a child. i really want to live in my childhood again. i miss the good old 90s days.
Even though my family has NEVER played Mario Kart 64, my mom likes this song. UPDATE: I just started playing Mario Kart 64 today, and I think that I will get to watch the Credits Roll.
My sister bought the n64 when it was released way before I was even born. Then she went on too high school etc. and then I was born on year 2000. When I was 6-10 years old, I'd always play games like: Mario kart 64, Super Mario 64, Super smash bros, Ocarina of time and many more. I remember I'd show my grandma almost every accomplishment I've done in the game. She used to feed me while I was playing. I wasn't born in the 90's however it's awesome how I got to experience that. Now I feel huge nostalgia. I feel like many people didn't and won't experience the true beauty of the these games because technology is advancing as we speak and now all people play are games like: cod, gta, bf and more. I'm just happy that I got to feel how other people feel when they played such a good console back in 1996. I dislike my generation a lot. Now we have Instagram and Hashtags, crappy music like blurred lines and earthquake and thousand more. I am feared to see what's coming towards 2060.
I' m not a 90's kid but this always brought nostalgia to me.I was 6 or 7 when I played this on original N64 at my friend's house.I also played the VC version,I know it isn't the same but I still try to beat it just hear this tune.I finished this whole game though I only use 150 instead.Mario Kart Forever :,)
Maaaaaan, hearing this makes me think of the time i played this. This song in the credits, It feels like i finished one big adventure and let me tell you something, it was!!
I want this played at my funeral. Not just because it’s such an incredible, beautiful piece of music, but because Mario Kart 64 was such an integral part of my childhood, and was a game that I still cherish to this day. It’s a game that I can always go back to, that’ll make me smile and lift up my spirits on my worst days. I know it may sound strange, but Mario Kart 64 is such a important part of my life.
I remember racing my sister and brothers in this game ways trying to one up each other and when we finally beat it. It’s like the credits was playing the last race between us in our childhood and it’s time to move on. But now I watch my nieces and nephews play it with my younger siblings and I can’t say enough how simple but memorable this game is.
This song always made me sad when I listened to it. It made me think of the team that came together to make this incredible game and how much work they put into it. This song was their final farewell and thanks for playing a game they put soo much effort into. Still tear up a little remembering when I was little; playing this game with my family was how we all came together every day. I miss those days :( ......
I can proudly say I was a part of this greatness in gaming back in 96. Hears to the good ol' days back when it was still all about fun... before we got steamrolled with never-ending FPS world war games.
The sound of my childhood. Remember this Playing with my family and Friends when i was 5 years old. Times were so easy, now im 25 , man it is how the „old“ People say, time flies. Close your eyes and suddenly your 25.. merry Christmas 🎄
🥺I'm holding back tears. So nostalgic. I remember playing this as a little kid with my older sister and dad (I rarely won 😂). Bring back the innocence 😭
Love this soundtrack. It was beautiful with the addition of a slideshow of all the tracks in Mario Kart 64. Some people say Mario Kart 64 is outdated, has cheating AI and has somewhat bad controls. I still consider Mario Kart 64 to be a pretty fun game. I find it better than Mario Kart 7 which bores the hell out of me at times.
Wow this is amazing. I wasn't very good at MK64 when I was a kid so this is the first time I've ever heard this music. It's basically Rainbow Road 2.0 :)
I've played alot of games in my time. 19 years old, got my first game system when I was 5. I may have Counter-Strike, Battlefield, and Team Fortress but nothing will ever compare to the joy and memories brought back to me when I hear this song and occasionally play MY Mario Kart 64. 10 years later it still works, 10 years later I still play it. Nothing will ever compare :)
After the struggle that is 150CC Special Cup, always comes this reward. This well won reward for your accomplishments fighting for first place through the four tracks. Relaxing music, the credits themselves, a view of each course. What is not to like about that? D.K.'s Jungle Parkway, through not very hard, can screw you up sometimes with it's turns. Yoshi Valley, with it's twisted paths, always needs your concentration. Take the wrong path, and you're screwed. Banshee Boardwalk, with those annoying turns that always mess you up. Slowing down is key. And finally, Rainbow Road. The last course you need to win to reach this nostalgia trip. Railroads make it easy, but remaining in first place is number one priority. Finally, after the Award Ceremony, comes this. The struggle is over. Your reward? Listening to this great track that always reminds you why Mario Kart 64 is so iconic, a masterpiece, and one of the best games in the Mario Kart series. The feels begin right when the "Mario Kart 64 Staff" hits the screen and this song begins to play. I always get nostalgic and teary when I reach the credits, because I don't regret owning a copy of this game at all. The fight to reach this point has been so hard, and yet it's so rewarding in the end. The credits await you. Are you ready for a nostalgic trip to the past?
I feel like this song should also play at every high school graduation ceremony as a goodbye to the seniors of the year and a start of the next chapter of their lives. This song fits that description.
This song was always sad to me. I got the vibe that the game was saying goodbye to you as you moved on with your life. Never got to play Mario Kart 64, but even without the nostalgia effect this song really is oddly emotional for a Mario Kart game. Those strings are simply godlike.
Balmung35 It is quite remarkable for MIDI, even the synth choir kind of works.
I cannot think of a video game music track better than this one.
if you haven't heard it, look up MK7's Rainbow Road theme. right up there with this theme in my opinion. they know how to make good soundtracks for sure lol
This was one of the first 3d Mario games, beginning of an era
The strings sound alot like the synth strings from a 70s keyboard called the ARP Solina.
That ''oooooh'' sound at 0:44 was very epic in almost all Nintendo's games of the 90's
yes holy shit i also thought it was a huge thing in n64 games for example the silver mountain theme from snowboard kids
it was a preset on the synth they commonly sampled (typically roland)
I think it’s considered a “Choir Ohhhh”
Now this is an even bigger tear jerker now that Charles Martinet has retired from the roles of Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi a few decades sooner than I expected.

Nathan The Hedgehog Thanks.

God I caught feels reading this while listening to this track :')
This Makes me Cry for some Reason.
Feel the wrath of this game!
after the half this song almost seems like music from a racing game that plots about saving the world
VERY emotional for a Mario Kart Song - WITHOUT ANY LYRICS

This is one of my favourite soundtracks ever, so emotional.

Hi, Neighbor! YES SURE IS ☺😀
mario kart wii though too
And this is why i love gaming.

Best Mario Kart ending ever!!!!
By a landslide too. Easily one of the greatest ending themes in all of gaming.

"Welcome to Mario Kart!"
This music is so beautiful.
The nostalgia of playing it with my mother. She was better at the game than me when I was 10.

When I beat mario kart 7 i turned the music down and listened to this song during the credits,
mario kart 7 music is terrible imo
