Hey Everyone! Today we're wrapping up our Epiphone EB-0/SG-1 Mod showcase! The Epiphone EB-0 is a deeply flawed instrument out of the factory with a terrible bridge design, lame pickup, and neck dive that would put an Olympian diver to shame. We're going to be addressing all of these flaws one by one to see if we can turn the Epiphone EB-0 into something worthwhile. Today, we're addressing one of the biggest flaws of the Epiphone EB-0... The BALANCE. Will a set of Hipshot Ultralite tuners alleviate the terrible neck dive? Let's find out!

Another great trick to solve neck dive on an SG is to relocate the strap button from the back to the tip of the top cut away.
This pretty much solves all the issues.
I have never had the courage to drill a new strap button, but this makes sense. Comically I once got am lp style that doesn't even have an upper strap button. I just play it sitting down because it's not my main instrument anyway
I put hipshot ultra lites in my epiphone embassy pro. No mods needed, no drilling. Not only is the bass lighter now, but it stays in tune like a champ. 😊
Notification squad, unite! Really enjoyed this mod series, and showing what you can do to these basses.
I find it ridiculous how *huge* the headstock is on these Epiphone basses, the tuners could definitely be spaced closer together on a smaller headstock, and would definitely help the neck dive.
The Ultralites are basically an essential for these basses at this point, we must once more thank the Lord for Hipshot!
Can we install a Gotoh bass bridge in an Epiphone EB 3 Bass?
The Hipshot is too EXPENSIVE.😅
As a shorty of 5’ 4” I’d fashion a bracket attaching to the neck plate screws, that relocates the strap button somewhere over the 12 fret. I have a warwick that I have made a post-extension that extend the strap button 1.5” from the horn. It makes her a little more comfortable for me.
Add a bridge pickup
True, but that’s already a totally different bass.
@@bobbyzig3879 make it into an EB3, bridge pickup and Varitone selector. EB3 is short scale.
I added a hotrail pickup in the bridge position and it's transformed the bass. D'addario Chromes flats. It's a monster! I can get the Allen Woody Gov't Mule tone and it's out of this world.
I would have been nice if you would have weighed the "Stock Turners & Bushings & Screws" and then weighed the "Hip Shot Turners & Bushings & Screws" determining the weight difference between them. Great series. Thx Lobster.
This Epiphone EB-0 Mod Series is one of the best mod series, not just from your channel, but from any YT Bass Channel. Bravo to you Lobbie!👍
thank you for this series of videos. the eb-0 was my dream bass back when i was a teenager and over the years i know that it's not a good bass as people had many complaints with it. but i know the bass can be improved with mods and your video series about the EB-0 cemented my decision. now i'm in my 30's, i decided to buy my dream bass second hand and will slowly upgrade it over time. I just started picking up my bass again after i quit my band almost 10 years ago. looking forward to another adventure.
Love the upgrade series videos ,I have epi a eb-0 a earlier model with the truss rod cover that says Gibson ,I modified it by adding a eb-3 bridge pickup , 2 volumes 1 tone using the output jack for tone control ,a side mount barrel jack now handles that job ,IMO neck dive isn't that big of a deal ,back in the day there where many brands that had that issue besides your hands are holding it while you play ,it doesn't play by itself.🤣
Thanks for demonstrating the Hipshot tuners. I have been thinking about trying a set. Now that I see how much of an improvement they can make I plan to go ahead and get some. Thanks for the excellent video. :) :)
Route a cavity and add a heavy bridge humbucker, not only it will give you more tone versatility, but the added mass closer to the back of the bass will push the center of gravity a bit further from the headstock.
that's been my main axe since '13, but i've only gotten as far as changing the bridge, I still have the stock pick-up & tuners, now I know what I need to do to upgrade, thanks for this series, one thing i've wondered about is changing the nut possibly to a brass one, I wonder if that would make much of a difference. I also kinda hate the strap buttons on mine. again, thanks
I’m in the minority, but I love Gibson basses in general. Interesting video series and definite improvements; probably not financially worth it, but a fun curiosity project.
I’d love to see Gibson do a “tribute” series (like the LP Jr Tribute; LOVE mine) for the Ripper. Or something a little bolder like an traditionally styled SG bass with a carbon fiber neck (re: the Klos bass)
The Ripper really needs to make a reappearance in somewhat lighter form. That was the classic Gibson that could do regular bass things the best but still had its own voice. The Epiphone Ripper was a poor imitation because of its generic pickups and hardware, but more carefully chosen generic gear like on the LP Jr. Tribute could be great. The thin matte finish of a budget Gibson would go great on a Ripper.
I have an EB-0 and the neck dive just isn't very bad at all. I remember being turned off by the neckdive of the EB-0 in the past, and it's just not bad
I have the exact mods on my EBO but still using the stock tuners. A wide leather strap mitigates the neck dive.
Mine stays in tune but a big fan of HIPSHOT hardware. I might upgrade to these one day but hate drilling new holes.
I have more expensive basses but my EBO is more of my more fun to play & great sounding basses.
Thanks for this series. I have a beater $80 EB-0 that was my gateway to flatwound strings that I now have on all my basses. You should try a comparison video with the rounds on it now vs half flat vs flatwound. Mod projects are never really finished. You could always put a piezo under the bridge. I’m searching for a spare neck for mine so I can have swappable fretted/fretless necks.
I never thought tuner weight was a thing to be concerned with until I got the "real" bass for an HB copy that I have, and the real deal had those chunky Fender-style tuners and terrible neck dive. Real McCoy got sold with the quickness, that HB has a permanent home with me. So, yeah, lesson learned, tuner weight matters.
I had one of those back in 07-09 maybe?. It was awful ( frets, electronics all of it). If you enjoy how the bass looks and plays and are hell bent on keeping it my recommendation is getting any Curtis Novak pickups that he makes to fit for the Eb series (you can get creative and get his thunderbird pickups to work on there too). By far the best I have tried for this bass model be it a Gib or epi.
Peace and stay safe
I love Ultralites, esp in 5 strings with 2X3 configuration, but great for 4 strings also regardless of neck dive.
Loved the Mod series! Now add a firebird pick-up and fuzz circuit because why the heck not lobster? For close to $2k you think Gibson would build their SG basses like this factory stock!
I’m a P bass man, P bass with Jazz neck. Can’t imagine getting one of these. Top mods though, food for thought.
Thanks for checking it out with a strap.
That is one well-polished turd.
The USA tuners are even lighter, so I bet they'd be even more beneficial.
Hipshots - killer!
I'm sure a mate of mine moved the neck strap button to the end of the 'top horn' to resolve his neck dive (plus a sturdier longer screw). Maybe not something you'd want to do if you jump about a bit.
Hiya,
If you had the EB3 instead, which pick up would you use for the bridge?
niiice! maybe change also the nut if it's just a piece of plastic
Interesting, thanks. 👍
Give it a bridge p-up, add a vari-tone switch, bass vibrato system I don’t know.
I play mine in classical position. No neck dive issues. But, I realize that's not for everyone.
I bought the Artec for my SG and it’s too big for the cavity. I plan to route it to make it fit.
Might I suggest trying the Gotoh GB528 Res-O-Lite tuners?
I got them for my Rivoli II, and they dropped in, and were significantly lighter than stock as well. YMMV in terms of weight compared to the Hipshot ones.
does the epi eb-0 have the thicker early 60s neck profile? If so, it might be worth sanding the finish off the neck and thinning it out a bit. I personally found that gibson/epiphone basses do benefit from relocating the top strap pin too. Its tricky to drill into that tiny upper bout but it will spread the weight out a lot more evenly than the neckplate position.
I’m about to do this operation. Does it still worth it?
Aye! Lovely
Cool. Can you put Rickenbacker-pickups in it ? Just to watch how similar it gets .
Honestly, I would have put a 1 Meg pot for more top end and definition.
Why not install a strap button on the upper horn?! That would help with the balance.
A 1mohm pot would brighten up the pu

I've found myself replacing the bridge and tuners on every bass I've owned that has neck dive. I like high-mass bridges anyway, and lightweight tuners are easy, if sometimes expensive. That said, the EB-0 doesn't seem like quite the mod platform that its competitor the Squier Bronco Bass is. I wouldn't get one unless I liked it to begin with, because what you end up with is still a lot like what you started with. I say that as someone who owned a modded (Gibson) EB-0. I loved it because it was an EB-0. I didn't even know the difference that the Dimarzio Model 1 was making because I'd never heard it with another functioning pickup.
But don't get one unless you want a dark, neck-heavy bass. That's just what an EB-0 is, love it or hate it.
Another recommended mod for a neck heavy bass is the Jennifer Finch special:

You've convinced me .... Not to buy this bass?
The strap button is literally a pivot point for the bass to swing. Horrible design on this guitar style. One of those rubber washer style strap locks may put a little extra tension on the strap button to prevent sliding at the strap.
All this series could've been done in one video
Would have been a long video lol. Plus it's easier for folks in the future searching for a specific thing to find. Someone looking for a pickup might not care about the bridge or tuners, and vice versa
Gibson never made a good bass.
The Ripper, Victory, and RD bass would like to have a word.
This is the equivalent of putting lipstick on a pig. But I do enjoy watching the upgrade.
