  • I was lucky enough to purchase this one-owner 1977 Jeep CJ5 last spring, and over the 10 weeks of our Spring term at UO, I was able to get it running and driving again, after it had sat in one spot for 14 years. This is my story.
    Here's the video I watched on using the drum brake pliers:

    What a great find! I always preferred the looks of the CJ5 over the CJ7. I had a YJ (with the much maligned square headlights) back in the late 80's, early 90's. It was a fun vehicle, but there always seemed to be something failing in it. I traded it for a Toyota 4x4 pickup and never looked back. If I had this one though, I'd keep it.

    New subscriber! Have been a long time fan of the CJ/Wranglers & love watching restoration videos on old jeeps. Been driving an ‘06 Wrangler for 13 years. Just got it back from the body shop because I had a rusty fender replaced. Enjoyed your video and am looking forward to seeing how this CJ comes along. Thanks for posting!

      Thanks! The plan is to stay original except for safety and reliability. I really like the look with these wheels and tires; I don't want to lift it and put big tires on it. Honestly, we won the war in Europe with jeeps that had a very similar set up, and that's good enough for me.

    I've got to get back to my jeeps. I've got an '81 CJ5 that's been sitting in my garage for about 12 years. Parked next to it is an '81 Scrambler that's been sitting in the garage for about 14 years and parked outside in the weather is a 91 YJ wrangler. I want to get to CJ5 going first and then slowly work my way into the others. Problem is that every time I start thinking about working on it, it seems like one of my daily driver vehicles craps out and I'm spending my vehicle tinkering time on that! Love the videos!

    I have a 1977 Jeep CJ5 same as yours, even to the color. Present mileage is 47000 miles. Runs great. Keep it in my garage since I bought it. I do most of the repair and maintenance on myself. Drive it once a week at least to keep the parts lubricated. Great machine.

    I have a 79 CJ5 that I'm going to change the distributor out with an HEI. I'm so glad to have seen this and I will be sure to apply the grease to the gear. Sorry but thank you. I'm rewiring and installing some new gauges and other stuff.

    • @DrPronghorn
      @DrPronghorn  Před 5 měsíci

      It would also be a good idea to try swapping out the gears to keep the original gear on the new distributor. I hope the grease helps, but I have heard of this happening to so many jeepers I would take every precaution I could!

    I had a '78 CJ-7 that I had to do so much of what you've done on yours. That was back in the late 90s. Had it for several years and it gave me good service. Mine needed a lot of cosmetic work, new paint, interior, plus 304 engine rebuild, brakes, and so on. The list was long. But, I enjoyed it and it was a pretty sweet ride in the end.
    I noticed your Jeep is in so much better condition than mine was; you scored a win on your purchase.

    Nice CJ5, I had a brand new 1979 CJ5 with 304 cid V8 back in the day and on Nov. 22,1981 I hit some black ice on the freeway and lost control and barrel rolled it at 75 mph. I survived with minor injuries, I did drive the Jeep after because it landed on it's wheels, but it was totaled. It was a fun vehicle and I never got stuck in the mud, it had Firestone Town & Country H78 15 Mud and snows on it. Great vehicle just not meant for the freeway or "J" turns.

    • @DrPronghorn
      @DrPronghorn  Před rokem +1

      Wow! I'm glad you survived! My plan is to keep it below 55 mph, and stick to back roads when I'm out in the Jeep.

    Those screws that hold the brake drum onto the hub - the putpose of those is to make sure the drums don't fall off while going down the assemlby line. That was their function. It's perfectly fine to leave them off.

And it's true doing a j-turn will put it on its side going 45 miles an hour. It's all fun and games until someone gets an eye put out. The early 80s were a fun time
